Precautions that should be taken while setting up Scaffolds

Scaffold, a temporary construction used in supporting, not only the workers but also acts as a holder to
construction and maintenance tools and materials. They are generally used in or on construction sites as
they are very helpful in aiding us navigate and access remote and "hard to reach" places like a very tall
structure. Failure in scaffolds can have fatal results. A Scaffold is found and used in shoring, for
formwork, concert stages, ski ramps, grandstand seating, exhibition stands and so on.

Various special tools and components like transoms carrying heavy loads, stairway units, ladders and
many others, which are put to use to help use scaffolds as a ''temporary structure''.

Types of Scaffolds:

Brick Layer's Scaffolding: This type of scaffold is also known as Single Scaffolding. Standards or
heightened platforms made of timber or bamboo, are set upon the ground, parallelly based to a wall or a
building, in a row. Any two standards have a distance of 2.4 to 3 metres in between them. They are in a
crisscross or checks form where the vertical Standards are linked with each other by the horizontal
Ledgers. The general distance between any two Ledgers ranges from 120 to 150 centimetres. Other
members like Putlogs ("transverse horizontal members") and Braces (diagonal) are attached as per
necessity.

Mason's Scaffolding: Also known as Double Scaffolding, this variety is used in projects of stone masonry
as this type is stronger than the Single Scaffolding. It is almost similar to brick layer's scaffold. The only
differences being that in Mason's Scaffolds, there are double rows of everything.

Tubular or Steel Scaffolding: This type of Scaffold is constructed in the same way as the Brick Layer's
Scaffold and Mason's Scaffold. However, here, tubes of steel are used instead of timber, which are of 40
to 60 metres of diameter. Steel Couples, instead of ropes, are used to connect the standards, ledgers,
putlogs and braces. Also, the standards are installed on base plates instead of being fixed "into the
ground". Steel Scaffolds are better than the previous two types as they can be constructed or
deconstructed in no time, thus, saving a lot of time. It is also very economical because it is a lot more
durable and stronger than timber. It also has a high capacity to resist fire and thus, ensures safety.
Cantilever Scaffolding: It is also known as Needle Scaffolding. Cantilever scaffolds are used in places
where the possibilty of attaching standards to the ground is null and void. This Scaffold also comes in
handy when beside a busy road or for the construction of tall structures and buildings. These scaffolds
are based at a certain height "above the ground level". It is placed on stands called Needle which is a
timber-made "cantilever structure" poking out of the numerous holes made in the wall.

Trestle Scaffolding: Its platform on which all the works take place has movable tripods or ladders as
supports. It is fixed at a height of 5 metres above ground level utmost. These are used in works inside
rooms like in case of paintings, repairs and so on.

Suspended Scaffolding: These are used in repair works and paintings. Its platform is hanged from the
ceiling or the roofs, with the help of wire ropes and chains. They are movable and adjustable and thus,
can be lowered or lifted accordingly.

Kwikstage Scaffolding: Kwikstage Scaffolds are produced from galvanised "hard wearing" steel. This type
of Scaffold can be easily assembled, constructed and dismantled. It can be constructed up to any height.

Tips to remember before installing Scaffolds:

Setting a scaffold can be quite dangerous as a liitle bit of distraction and mistake can take someone's life.
You must ensure that you are equipped with all the tools necessary to finish the structure and should
plan beforehand. Create a strong foundation in order to make sure that nothing goes haywire. Putting
tight-fitting boards can also be a safe measure to be taken. Also, thoroughly check and inspect the
scaffold you rent for damages before using it and then you are good to go.
