What is a prime minister?

• The prime minister is in charge of the

government.

• They are responsible for making decisions on

things, such as how the government spends
money. They can also suggest new laws which
are voted on in parliament.

UK Prime Minister Liz Truss has resigned.

She has stepped down as prime minister and
as leader of the Conservative Party.
Standing outside 10 Downing Street, she said
she had: “spoken to His Majesty The King to
notify him that I am resigning”.
She added: “There will be a leadership election
to be completed in the next week.
“I will remain as Prime Minister until a
successor has been chosen.”
Liz Truss became the prime minister only 45
days ago. She took over from Boris Johnson after
he had to resign.
Since taking office in September, she was
criticised for the choices she and members of her
cabinet had made.
Without the support of her own party, Liz
Truss was forced to step down.
A new leader of the Conservative Party
will be chosen by the end of next week.
Because the Conservative Party is the largest
party in parliament, whoever is chosen will
automatically become the prime minister too.
They will become the fifth prime minister the
UK has had in the last six years.

about another change in leadership he said:
“Britain deserves better.
“We need a general election now.”
Liz Truss becomes the shortest-serving prime
minister in British history.
