Leela
• P Leela was born in 1934, in
Chittur, Palakkad.
• Starting at the age of 13, she
has sung about 5000 film songs
in all the South Indian languages
– Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and
Kannada.
• Her songs are known for their
emotional touch and classical
discipline.
• She was awarded Padma
Bhushan posthumously for her
contributions in the year 2006.
• She was conferred with the
Kalaimamani title in 1992 by
Chief Minister J Jayalalitha.
• Leela received the best playback
singer award of the Kerala
government in 1969 for the
song Ujjayiniyile Gaayika from
the movie Kadalpalam.
Laurie Baker

Baker was a British-born Indian

• He became an Indian citizen in 1989 and resided in

Rural Development), an organisation to promote low-cost housing.
• In 1990, the Government of India awarded him the Padma Shri for
his meritorious service in the field of architecture. In 1992, he was
awarded the Roll of Honour by the United Nations.
M T Vasudevan Nair
• MT, is an Indian author,
screenplay writer and film
director.
• His first major novel Naalukettu
(Ancestral Home- translated to
English as The Legacy), written
at the age of 23, won the Kerala
Sahitya Akademi Award in 1958.
• His other novels include Manju (Mist), Kaalam (Time), Asuravithu
(The Prodigal Son - translated to English as The Demon Seed) and
Randamoozham (The Second Turn).
• The deep emotional experiences of his early days have gone into the
making of MT's novels. Most of his works are oriented towards the
basic Malayalam family structure and culture and many of them were
path-breaking in the history of Malayalam literature.
• He has directed seven films and written the screenplay for around 54
films.
• He won the National Film Award for Best Screenplay four times for:
Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha (1989), Kadavu (1991), Sadayam (1992),
and Parinayam (1994), which is the most by anyone in the screenplay
category.
• He was awarded the highest literary award in India, Jnanpith, in 1995
for his overall contribution to Malayalam literature. In 2005, India's
third highest civilian honour Padma Bhushan was awarded to him.
• He has won numerous other awards and recognition including
Kendra Sahitya Akademi Award, Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award,
Vayalar Award, Vallathol Award, Ezhuthachan Award, Mathrubhumi
Literary Award and O. N. V. Literary Award.

drama style known as Kathakali.

awarded him the civilian honour
of Padma Shri in 2009.
K J Yesudas

songs.
• He is often referred to as
Gaanagandharvan.
• Yesudas holds the record for
singing 11 songs in different
languages in a single day
• Yesudas won the National Award for the Best Male Playback Singer
record eight times.
• State Award for the Best Playback Singer forty-three times, including
awards given by the state governments of Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra
Pradesh, Karnataka, and West Bengal.
• He was awarded the Padma Shri in 1975, the Padma
Bhushan in 2002, and the Padma Vibhushan (second-
highest civilian award in 2017 by the Government of India for
his contributions towards the arts.

• He is an Indian film director,

• Gopalakrishnan pioneered the
new wave in Malayalam cinema
during the 1970s.
• Nearly all of his films premiered at Venice, Cannes and Toronto
International Film Festival.
• Gopalakrishnan has won the National Film Award 16 times.
• Gopalakrishnan's debut film, the national award-winning
Swayamvaram (1972) was a milestone in Malayalam film
history.
• The films that followed namely Kodiyettam, Elippathayam,
Mukhamukham, Anantaram, Mathilukal, Vidheyan and
Kathapurushan lived up to the reputation of his first film and
were well received by critics at various film festivals and
fetched him many awards.
