CHAPTER 1

Introduction

A. BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY:

This study aims to comparing Turmeric and Aloe Vera in terms of curing or

relieving back pain. In this quarantine days many are experiencing back pain because of lack in

exercise and limited tasks that should prevents it. The researchers are aiming to assess which is

more effective to relieve back pain if it is turmeric or aloe Vera.

Back pain is a discomfort or often crippling pain associated with an injury to the

back, the posterior part of the body that stretches from the shoulders to the hips, or some other

affliction of the back (Samartzis et al, 2014). Individuals can frequently distinguish and treat

body hurts without seeing a specialist and some of them might treating themselves naturally with

medicinal plants. There are strong anti-inflammatory properties in turmeric and aloe vera which

can help to reduce inflammation, joint pain, and arthritis (Sofia, n.d.). According to National

Cancer Institute, anti-inflammatory is a medication or substance that decreases the amount of

inflammation in the body like redness, swelling, and pain. The turmeric is flowering plant,

Curcuma longa is a scientific name of this plant and it belongs to the family of ginger. The roots

of turmeric commonly used in cooking. It was mainly use in making savoury and sweet dishes.

The turmeric plant can also be used in medical purposes. Circumin, an active compound in

turmeric, is also known for its healing-promoting antioxidant and anti-inflammatory function

1
(McQuillan, S. et al, n.d.). Studies have found, like ginger, that turmeric can have pain-reducing

capacity equal to that of prescription and over-the-counter drugs in some instances. The Aloe

vera plant or Aloe barbadensis miller for its scientific name. It is a perennial succulent plant in

tropical climates. The aloe vera plant was known for its mending properties. Aloe vera plant can

also be utilize as pain reliever. The novel anti-inflammatory compound called C-glucosyl

chromone has been extracted from aloe vera gel extracts (Surjushe, A. et al, 2008) Centuries

prior the aloe vera gel was found and got to be a popular home grown cure that was utilized to

assist treat everything from skin issues to stomach related issues (Lawler, 2018).

In our situation, we spend most of our time inside our home and doing our things,

work, or job sitting in front of our computer and laptop and experiencing back ache/back pain.

There’s a lot of treatments that it can be effective in treating back pains. This study focuses on

only two of them which is turmeric and aloe vera. This study aims to know what is more

CHAPTER 2

Literature Review

This chapter will focus on the review literatures of this study. The articles and some

books are used to identify the other connected interest or study about the effectiveness of

turmeric and aloe vera in treating back pain.

The researchers combine the different insights of different people from foreign

information’s and from some local sources. And the researchers will also examine each of that

information to explain widely and be able to give additional information to the benefactor of

this study.

FOREIGN LITERATURE

EFFECTS OF TURMERIC'S COMPONENT – CURCUMIN

According to Webb (2015). Many people who are experiencing back pain are not

diagnosed. Even before, using turmeric root to relieve pain and inflammation has been practice.

Turmeric is a traditional medicine and has been known as a treatment for inflammatory

conditions. Turmeric’s primary component is Curcumin, it is the component responsible for the

anti-inflammatory effects. This study shows that curcumin with turmeric oil is much effective

than curcumin alone. Curcumin has the ability to treat many pain and inflammation such as back

pain, arthritis, and other.

7
SAFENESS AND EFFECTIVENESS OF CONSUMING TURMERIC EXTRACT

According to the study of Daily, J.W., and et.al. (2016), the number of people

experiencing inflammation like arthritis is growing. There are few remedies used to treat arthritis

such as analgesic known as painkiller and steroids this two medication is commonly used to

relieve the pain from the body. Yet by continuously consuming painkillers, steroids and other

pharmaceuticals can cause serious disease. Therefore turmeric has the same anti-inflammatory

properties and a potential alternative to relieve body pain and the side effect is minimal

compared to painkillers and steroids. Study shows that turmeric extract can be used to relieve

and reduce sprains, back pain, and other musculoskeletal disorder.

TURMERIC HEALTH BENEFITS

We know that the anti-inflammatory is natural in herbal medicine like turmeric, as a

traditional medicine. Turmeric is effective when it comes to treatment of many different health

conditions such as body pain, arthritis, and etc. The turmeric has an antioxidant and anti-

inflammatory which is natural in herbal medicine like curcumin which is a component of

turmeric. Natural anti-inflammatory helps your body to reduce inflammation without taking side

effects. The curcurmin is very rich in iron, so it’s good for using as a treatment for body pain, it

helps the body to build up reducing the swelling of body. Turmeric is useful as a medicine and

for healing in many different health conditions. (Debjit Bhowmik, et. al., 2008)

THE IMPORTANCE OF ALOE VERA FOR MEDICINAL TREATMENTS

Aloe vera contains a lot of benefits to human bodies, which is needed to gather more

information or some data about aloe vera, so that's why Balan and her co-researchers conduct a

8
research to determine the value of aloe vera, and what does aloe vera effect to human bodies if

they use it for medical treatments. The researchers found out that the gel of the Aloe vera plant

can be also applied directly on the swollen and painful joints. The gel will provide relief of joint

immobility and pain, due to its anti-inflammatory properties. And another finding where the

researchers found that the study of bioregulators possess immunomodulating action on primary

humoral immune response and do not increase a delayed type hypersensitivity reaction. That’s

why the authors concluded that aloe gel in a lower concentration might be used in combination

with probiotic Lactobacillus strains as a therapy for gastrointestinal disorders. (Balan, J.B., et al.,

2014)

MEDICINAL USES OF ALOE VERA LEAF

According to Mclntruff, J.E., and et. al., (2005), an ideal antimicrobial molecule should

also have an anti-inflammatory property as the infections are associated with inflammation. We

all know that the Aloe vera is as a traditional medicine and as an ingredient in many cosmetic

products. But in this study proves that the aloe vera leaf can also be used in body pain. Because it

has a novel protein and anti-inflammatory properties of molecular weight 14kDa from aloe vera

leaf. Aloe vera also has nutrition that shows anti-inflammatory action and has a wide range of

antimicrobial activity.

9
LOCAL LITERATURE

ETHNOMEDICINAL KNOWLEDGE OF TURMERIC/LUYANG DULAW

According to Docusin M.B. (2017), people nowadays especially youths are not that

familiar with herbal medicines anymore. They think that herbal medicines are not important and

functional these days. With that, only a few people still use herbal medicine. The healing effect

of 109 plant species are used medicinally and helps local medicine and healing against 13

categories of ailments. The study was conducted in the Santol, La Union. It shows that herbal

medicines are still useful and functional. In the most frequently species, Turmeric or Luyang

Dilaw are usually used for body pain, backache, arthritis and etc. The preparation is to heat

rhizomes or leaves with coconut oil. This demonstrated that many plant species are important in

healing practices and that knowledge of traditional medicine (Docusin M. B., 2017).

ALOE VERA AS AN ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE

According to Sagun-De Vera, J. (2017), alternative medicine is popular here in the

Philippines, many types of plants are used for many types of medication. And many of these are

validated and does have clinical proof that it is effective. The study was conducted in the City of

Alaminos in just 9 selected Barangays to determine the use of herbal/alternative medicine of the

people of the barangay. The plants use for alternative medicine is mostly planted just in their

backyard gardens for treating their disease (Barret S., n.d.). The total selected respondents for the

study are 120. 42 of them is using aloe vera as an alternative medicine and this is 35% out of 120

respondents, they use aloe vera as anti-inflammatory. The result shows that those who use

10
alternative medicine is middle adults, females and have not finished basic education and belong

to low income families. According to Jocelyn Sagun De-Vera (2017), they use the alternative

medicine even if they don’t know the exact content and the properties of the herbal.

ZINGIBERACAEA AS AN ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE FOR BACK PAIN

The ethnic groups in the Aurora, Philippines. Used a different kind of ethno medical

plants and one of them is the Organic Turmeric family called as Zingiberaceae. The Philippines

is a mega-diverse country and due to its geography, show high degrees of endemism. The

researchers form a survey to the community of Aurora, Philippines about their current

knowledge about the ethno medical plants. According to their survey the turmeric is used for

body pain cough and sprain. The method that need to do is pound then boil the turmeric and used

for bathing. The researchers collected a 64 plants samples that was done in Aurora Philippines.

As they used this samples, the researchers showed that the plants were recommended to use this

for medicines and the Zingiberaceae is for back pain.

GENOTYPIC CHARACTERIZATION OF TURMERIC (CURCUMA LONGA L.)

The Turmeric plant (Curcuma longa l) considered as tropical perennial herb from

Zingiberaceae family. This plant was use first for food spice or ingredients and natural dye for

clothing. Time pass by this plant was discovered a potential for new source of drugs for variety

of diseases. Turmeric plant contains curcuminoids or curcumin. Because of curcumin of this

plant some therapeutic properties were attributed by this plant like anti-inflammatory,

11
antioxidant, anticarcinogenic, wound healing, and anti-viral properties (Corcolon et. al, 2015).

Small-scale commercial planting has begun in the Philippines, where turmeric is

reportedly an introduced species, and many companies producing herbal-based food

supplements and other nutraceutical products also have turmeric as one of the components.

Turmeric is refined into tea granules and capsules in Mindanao, all of which are commonly

used by alternative medicine practitioners. However, no systematic research on Philippine

turmeric has been carried out, considering the increasing interest in the many possible health

benefits that may be derived from turmeric. There has been no verification of the identity of the

organisms being cultivated, as well as the potential presence of genetic variation resulting from

various introductions that may lead to different chemical and molecular profiles. Therefore, this

research aims to evaluate or assess genetic variation using RAPD markers among the various

turmeric accessions from Mindanao, Philippines (Corcolon et. al, 2015).

Relatively large PIC values, EMR and MI (except for OPA12) were found in six of the

10 random primers used for RAPD research suggesting that the primers were strong and were

able to differentiate between genotypes of turmeric. Generally, the phylogram-based clustering

of the accessions did not show any important trend according to the locations from which the

accessions were obtained. The absence of position specificity among the genotypes collected

and the difference in the genotypes present in a particular province may be attributable to the

exchange and introduction from one province to another of various genotypes in the form of

planting materials (Corcolon et. al, 2015).

12
TURMERIC PLANT USED BY THE PEOPLE OF ROGONGON, ILIGAN CITY,

PHILIPPINES

This article is about medicinal plants conducted in Rogongon in Iligan City, Philippines

how to use it. According to Olowa, et. al. (2012) The people used medicinal plants since the start

of human civilization and the knowledge about plants of our ancestors is maintained and develop

just using verbal language so it is important because without their knowledge we don't have

proper medicine now. The turmeric is one of many medicinal plants that the indigenous people

use it treats diarrhea, abdominal pain, arthritis and lower hypertension (Olowa et. al) The

preparation on how to use it is to boil the turmeric and drink it thrice a day. Medicinal plants is

really good if you are sick or having pain just choose the right plant for the right use.

13
CHAPTER 3

Methodology

A. RESEARCH DESIGN

The researchers will conduct this study using a quantitative design. Quantitative research

is the process of collecting and analyzing numerical data. It can be used to find patterns and

averages, make predictions, test causal relationships, and generalize results to wider populations

(Bhandari, 2020). This will be conducted to the randomly selected students of STI College

Caloocan who will represent the population. This study used experimental research design.

An experimental research design is a type of research method in which you manipulate one or

more independent variables and measure their effect on one or more dependent variables.

(Bevans, 2020). The researcher manipulate and control to test if the hypothesis is valid. There are

two type of experimental research which are true experimental design and quasi-experimental

design. True experimental research design is used in this research. In true experimental research

the selection of participant is random therefore free from bias.

B. SAMPLING METHOD

The researcher will use a random sampling method to reduce any bias involved and have

a fair selection to gather 50 respondents. In every population, the assigned researcher will limit

the respondents chosen by a random sampling method to 10. Researchers will get the master list

14
of each selected population from System Technology Institute College Caloocan. All the names

of participants/students in a population will put their names on a paper by the researchers. The

researcher will cut it into small pieces and place it inside a box or container. Then the researchers

will randomly draw a piece of paper inside the box or container. The 50 small pieces of paper

that the researcher will draw will be their respondents. And only then will they give a survey

question to the selected respondents. This survey will serve to find out their knowledge regarding

the effectiveness of Turmeric and Aloe vera in terms of treating back pain. So that their

knowledge will answer the problem which alternative back pain treatment is more effective and

efficient.

C. LOCALE OF THE STUDY

This study will be conducted at STI College Caloocan. This place is selected for knowing

the efficiency of the said study among the students of STI College Caloocan. It's not safe for us

to go outside of our home so that the study will be conducted online. So as the new learning

system of our country. The study will be done thru online because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

For the respondents the researchers will make a Google Forms which is made by Google itself.

Google said that Google Forms collects information via personalized quizzes or surveys. Using

this we can follow the proper learning system given to us. The target respondent for this study

was the random students of STI College Caloocan. This study will be conducted in the first

semester academic year 2020-2021.

15
D. POPULATION OF THE STUDY

The researcher's target respondents are the students of STI College Caloocan. From

Grade 11 to College students. The respondents may be male or female. Any academic strand of

grade 11 and 12 senior high. And any course that STI offers to the college students. The

qualifications for the respondents has to follow: First is they have to be ages 15 - 21 years old;

Any gender is qualified; And the last qualification the respondent's has to follow is they do not

have any allergy or allergies on taking any kinds of organic products. Particularly organic

turmeric and aloe vera.

E. RESEARCH INSTRUMENT

The researchers chose to use questionnaire as their research instrument. Because

questionnaires is one of the most possible way that we can gather all the information of our

respondents. The researchers also based on the situation of our country due to pandemic which is

there are no face-to-face classes are allowed. What do you mean by questionnaire? A

questionnaire is a research instrument commonly used by the researcher. Questionnaire is a

method consisting a series of question for the purpose of gathering information from the

respondents. (Saul McLeod, 2018). The questionnaire the researchers will be using is NON-

STANDARDIZE, NON-STANDARDIZE is the one that allows for an assessment of an

individual's abilities or performances, but doesn't allow for a fair comparison of one student to

another. (Sam Jose, 2017). Type of survey question that the researchers will be using is

contingency question. What is contingency question? These are the questions intended for

16
specific respondents only (Torneo & Clamor Terneo, 2017). The researchers also implements the

questions in multiple choice, where the question has four choices that the respondents will

choose.

F. DATA GATHERING PROCEDURE

STEP 1: The researchers decided to conduct a survey about the effectiveness of using organic turmeric

and aloe vera as an alternative back pain treatment.

STEP 2: The researchers constructed twenty (20) non-standardized survey questionnaires related to the

effectiveness of turmeric and aloe vera in relieving back pain. The survey questionnaire consists of

multiple-choice and dichotomous type of questions.

STEP 3: Using random sampling, the researchers selected the respondents. The respondents must be

students of STI College Caloocan aged 15 to 21 years. The respondent must be no allergies in any kind of

organic products.

STEP 4: The survey questionnaires prepared by the researchers are answered by the respondents.

STEP 5: The researchers collect all the answers of the respondents to the questionnaires and carefully

tally or tabulate the data.
