This pack contains three activities to help you apply what you have learned in the ‘Who
Can Help You’ module.

In Activity 1 you will prepare for a meeting with your advisor.

In Activity 2 you will explore who you know and can help you in your job search.

In Activity 3 you will explore different resources to help you to learn about networking

THE KEY THINGS TO REMEMBER ARE:

1. There are many different people who can help you in your job
search, including job advisors, family, friends, and recruitment
agencies.
2. Not everyone will have access to jobs or know about the industry you
want to work in, but they may be able to offer useful advice.
3. It’s a two-way relationship, so you should do some preparation before
you speak to people to ensure you get the most out of it.

ACTIVITY 1: HOW TO PREPARE FOR YOUR JOB ADVISOR

MEETING
Job advisors can give you vital help in your job search. They may be able to give you some
great advice on things like interview preparation, finding the right job and creating an action
plan. The template on this page can help you get the most out of your time with an advisor
by making you think about and answer some important questions before your meeting.

Think about each question and fill in your responses below.

o Advisors have access to useful tools and information BUT are not a shortcut into
work; they don't have a magic wand!
o Advisors may have access to job vacancies and have relationships with some
employers. Remember to ask about this!

ACTIVITY 2: WHO DO YOU KNOW THAT CAN HELP YOU?

People you know that can help you in your job search can be called your ‘network’.
Remember that even if they can’t help you directly, they may know someone who can.
The table below will help you think about who you know, and how they might be able to
advise you from their experiences of work or even help you find a job opportunity. You will
need to write the names of people you think might be relevant to your job search in the
appropriate boxes. Also make a note of how they might be able to help you.
For example, Uncle Jim – works in the banking industry and might know of openings in the
college development program. Chloe from college – her mom works in retail – she might be
able to help you understand more about working in sales and retail.

Once you know who might be helpful, reach out to them requesting time to meet or speak
with them. It is important to be polite and to be clear about what you would like to get out of
a conversation with them. An example of what you might say is below.

SAMPLE NETWORKING EMAIL

Hi Sam,

My name is Jenny Brown. I received your email address from my colleague Shelly
who worked with you last year. She told me that you have your Comptia A+
certificate and work as a project manager. I’m finishing up my certificate in a week
and would like a career in project management. If you would be willing, I would love
to hear about your career experience and get some advice for my own journey.
Please let me know.

Este paquete contiene tres actividades para ayudarte a aplicar lo que has aprendido en el

ASESOR DE TRABAJO?
Los asesores laborales pueden brindarte ayuda vital en tu búsqueda de empleo. Es
posible que puedan darte buenos consejos sobre cómo prepararte para las entrevistas,
encontrar el trabajo adecuado y crear un plan de acción. La plantilla en esta página puede
ayudarte a aprovechar al máximo tu tiempo con tu asesor al hacer que pienses y
respondas algunas preguntas importantes antes de tu reunión.

Piensa en cada pregunta y escribe tus respuestas:

ACTIVIDAD 2: ¿CONOCES A ALGUIEN QUE PUEDA AYUDARTE?

Las personas que conoces que pueden ayudarte en tu búsqueda de empleo pueden
denominarse tu "red". Recuerda que en caso de que ellos no puedan ayudarte
directamente, es posible que conozcan a alguien que sí pueda.
La siguiente tabla te ayudará a pensar en quién conoces y cómo podría asesorarte
basados en su experiencia laboral e inclusive ayudarte a encontrar una oportunidad
laboral. Necesitas escribir los nombres de las personas que crees que podrían ser
relevantes para tu búsqueda de empleo en las casillas correspondientes. También toma
nota de cómo podrían ayudarte.
Por ejemplo, tío Jim: trabaja en la industria bancaria y podría conocer vacantes en el
programa de desarrollo universitario. Chloe de la universidad, su madre trabaja en el
comercio minorista, podría ayudarte a comprender más sobre el trabajo en ventas y
comercio minorista.

Una vez que sepas quién puede ser útil, comunícate con ellos y pídeles tiempo para
reunirse y hablar. Es importante ser educado y tener claro los resultados que deseas
obtener de la conversación con ellos. A continuación, se muestra un ejemplo de lo que
podría decir.
