HAND EMBROIDERY

STITCHES

CREWEL GHOUL
INTRO
Hand embroidery is such a fun, meditative
practice. The stitches in this PDF are some
basic ones that I think everyone should
learn. Enjoy!

SUPPLIES
You'll need just a few basic supplies to get
practicing.

Embroidery Hoop
Embroidery Needle
Fabric - cotton or linen works great
Embroidery Scissors
Embroidery Thread - I recommend the
brand DMC

and love.
EMBROIDERY STITCHES
Satin Stitch

Make straight stitches side by side, filling in an area/shape. There shouldn't be any
space between the stitches and they should lay neatly next to one another. The
edges of the stitches should be smooth and even.

Stem Stitch

A
C E
B
D

Come up through the fabric at A. Place your needle through B and C and pull the
thread through. Then place your needle through D and E and repeat the desired
length.

Back Stitch

B
C
A
D

Make one straight stitch. Skip some space (the length of the stitch you made) and
come back up through the fabric. Come back down through the fabric at the end of
the 1st stitch that was made. Repeat the desired length.
EMBROIDERY STITCHES
French Knot

Bring thread through the back of the fabric. Hold the thread securely in non-
working hand and twist thread around needle 1-3 times. Bring needle down right
next to the initial spot you came up through and pull tight.

Chain Stitch

B D

A C

Grab the fabric at A and B and wrap the thread around the top of the needle.
Pull the needle and thread through.
Go back down through the fabric at C and D and repeat desired length.
