ARCHITECTURAL MATHEMATICS – I

COURSE OBJECTIVES

To make the students refresh the basics of those parts of mathematics which are useful in the field of
Architecture and gain a new focus on Architectural Mathematics. The Limits, Differential Calculus,
Integral Calculus and Application of derivatives are the core components to refresh.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

• Students should be able to det the grasp on topic of mathematics which are essential to the
field of architecture like limits and their uses to define continuity, derivatives and integrals.
• Learn the basics of differentiation and their application for finding rate of change of a quantity,
approximation value, maxima and minima etc.
• Learn the basics of integration and its application to find the area under a curve.

COURSE CONTENTS

1. Limits (20%)

1.1. Introduction, concept of limit, limit of functions, right-hand limit, left-hand limit,
fundamental theorems on limit
1.2. Limits of algebraic functions, trigonometric functions
1.3. Limits of logarithmic and exponential functions
1.4. Limits of composite functions
1.5. Limits at Infinity and Infinite limits, Sandwich theorem
1.6. Distinction between limit and value of a function

2. Derivatives (30%)

2.1 Introduction, derivative of a function at a point, geometrical and physical significance of a


derivative
2.2 One sided derivatives, derivative in an interval, continuity and differentiability
2.3 Theorems on differentiation, differentiation of sum, product and quotient of functions
2.4 Differentiation of polynomial, trigonometric, inverse, logarithmic, exponential, hyperbolic,
parametric and implicit functions
2.5 Logarithm differentiation and differentiation by preliminary transformation
2.6 Derivative of function of a function

3. Application of derivatives (20%)

3.1 Derivative as a rate of measure, errors and approximations

3.2 Increasing and decreasing functions, absolute maximum and minimum value of a function, local
maxima and minima, test for finding local extremum, application of maxima and minima
3.3 The tangent to a curve, equations of tangent lines to some well known curves, normal to a curve

4. Integration (30%)

4.1 Integration as inverse process of differentiation. Properties of indefinite integral,


integration by substitution, integration using trigonometric identities, integration by parts,
integration using partial fractions
4.2 Basic properties of definite integrals, definite integral as the limit of a sum, definite
integral by substitution
4.3 Application of definite integral in finding the area of bounded regions by the curves

TEACHING APPROACH

• Students should be made to feel grasp on basic of mathematics essential to the field of
architecture like limits, derivatives and its applications.
• Should be made to understand the process of integration and calculation of area under a curve
by applying the integration

COURSE OBJECTIVES

To make the students build on the basics of mathematics which are useful in the field of Architecture
and studied in first semester. The applications of Differential Calculus, vector algebra, algebra and
mensuration are the core components.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

• Students should be able to det the grasp on topic of mathematics which are essential to the
field of architecture like basic algebra and mensuration and their application in Architecture
• Learn and understand the applications of differential calculus
• Learn the basics of vector algebra and 3-Dimensional geometry.

COURSE CONTENTS

1. Algebra and Mensuration (20%)


1.1 Area of plane figures – triangle, rectangle, circle, parallelogram, irregular figures
1.2 Volume and Surface Area – prism, pyramid, cone, cylinder, frustum
1.3 Algebra–Progression and their properties, arithmetic and geometric progression

2. Differential Equation (40%)


2.1 Definition, order and degree of differential equation
2.2 Solution of a differential equation- general and particular solution
2.3 Formation of a differential equation
2.4 Solving differential equations by separation of variables
2.5 Method of solving homogeneous equations
2.6 Solving first degree and second degree differential equations
2.7 Applications of differential equations

3. Vectors and Three Dimensional Geometry (40%)


3.1 Scalars and vectors, angle between two vectors, scalar and vector product of two
vectors, Scalar triple product, vector triple product
3.2 Co-ordinates of a point in space, position vector of a point in space, distance
between two points, section formula
3.3 Direction cosines of a line, direction ratios of a line, angle between two lines
3.4 Equation of a line passing through a given point and parallel to a given vector
3.5 Equation of a line passing through two given points, collinearity of three given
points
3.6 Shortest distance between two lines, distance between parallel lines, condition
for two given lines to intersect

architecture like basic algebra, mensuration, and their applications in architecture.
• Should be made to understand the application of differential calculus
• Should be made clear the concept of vector algebra and 3-Dimensional geometry.
