How do you create a space that goes beyond having a sustainable aesthetic
to delivering a product with a core purpose to reuse, reclaim and recycle? By
putting sustainability at the forefront of your delivery from pitch right through

Brandfuel took over Prom-

management office located at
the heart of the World Economic Forum
in Davos, on behalf of our client Google.
We transformed the characterless office
into a chic and cosy Swiss chalet-in-
spired space, in which our client could
hold high-level meetings, press inter-
views and receptions.

Our vision was to make this space our

most sustainable to date. In-fact this
event led to our success in being the first
agency to achieve the ISO 20121 certifi-
cation for both 'in person' and virtual
events and here are some easily replica-
ble tips as to how we did it:

1. Our design and production teams only

presented budget-friendly options to our
client that included sustainable materials.

2. We insisted on using local contrac-

tors and suppliers to avoid long-dis-
tance delivery of goods and to reduce our
carbon footprint.

3. Reuse, reuse, reuse. Countertops

were made out of recycled yoghurt pots
and were labelled to show delegates the
possibility of recycling. The floors were
made from recycled tyres and oak beams.
Old scaffolding planks were used on the
facade of the unit and in the boot room.

6. We insisted on using low energy

ered carbon-neutral because the amount
of carbon dioxide produced when they
burn equals the amount that the tree
absorbed when it was growing.

7. All food and drinks used for receptions

were locally sourced to reduce food miles
and support local businesses.

8. None of our meals contained red meat.

If every meal at Davos 2020 had included
beef, the total food emissions would have
increased by 430% or 3,821 kg CO2e.

9. Assets were donated after the event -

our plants were sent to local schools so
they could have a new life elsewhere.

10. Items that could not be donated were

packed up and stored by Brandfuel in our

11. Our giveaways were reusable. Items It’s important to remember that sustainability is not just a design buzzword,

creating a positive impact
in the process.
One of the biggest challenges facing
sustainability in events is the amount
of waste we create. From graphics to
giveaways, planks of woods to plants, we
need real materials to create authentic
experiences but this is often to the
detriment of our planet. What if there
was a way to stop leftovers from going
to landfill and create a positive impact
in the process?

E
vents in the current climate rely on the safety of
recycling as the answer to this problem but this
energy intensive process simply displaces the
issue. In the first instance, we should be looking
to reduce what we produce. But when waste is a necessary
event component we all need to take responsibility and iden-
tify where each item goes once the attendees have gone home.
Frequently, the majority of our event waste ends up in skips
onsite and the rest is transported to storage units where
they are forgotten about until they end up in skips offsite.

Saving the environment,
one virtual event at a time
Lysa Campbell, CEO at Retail Marketing Group

In November 2020, the Prime Minister announced his 10-point plan for a ‘Green
Industrial Revolution’, which spanned across numerous industries. The announcement
provides an ongoing opportunity for the UK to develop new innovations across the
board, to help reach the ultimate goal of zero emissions. This is an area that the events
industry has been focusing on for the last few years.

E
ven with this increase in carbon budgets, domes-
tic emissions need to be reduced to at least 3% per
year to reach the UK's 2050 target of reducing emis-
sions by 80% from 1990. There may not be time to
develop completely new technologies in this time frame. There-
fore, companies need to look at advancing and improving current
technologies such as virtual and hybrid working, events and
conferencing.

The last 12 months have seen in person events either cancelled

or converted to virtual. Then, in February 2021, the govern-
ment announced its phased reopening of society. Many
companies will interpret this as needing to choose between
solely using virtual or in person events, however by combin-
ing the two into hybrid events companies can further the
UK’s goal of Net Zero as well as reap the benefits of each.

32
Going virtual and hybrid to be Delivering an energetic and vibrant experience for both the

attendance of 3,000 people can result in 3.75 million kg of carbon
dioxide being emitted into the atmosphere, equivalent to 75,000
car journeys between London and Paris.

Virtual and hybrid events and conferences can eliminate the

need for people to travel, in addition to reducing the need to ship
equipment, staging and other materials. These types of events
are also more accessible for attendees, facing no geographical
limitations and giving businesses the ultimate flexibility in
organising events.

Waste caused by printed materials such as brochures and

marketing collateral also increases the carbon footprint of
an event, alongside the emissions output that is needed to
generate these materials. According to a study from Birmingham
University, a one-day physical event can produce over five
tonnes of refuse waste, including flyers and leaflets. Virtual
and hybrid events cut out the need completely, providing the
same information through digital formats.

The future of virtual events

Virtual events are not designed to replace every aspect of live
events, instead combining the best of both worlds to create
a unique, greener experience. This provides the engagement
of live events with the versatility of digital, to create the next
generation of events: the immersive virtual or hybrid event.

Events bring
sustainability
to life
Ahead of EVCOM's Clarion Awards which recognise environmental issues in one
category, Claire Fennelow, executive director of EVCOM, looks at how agencies can
lead the way on sustainability in live events and experiences.

M
ark Carney, former Governor of the Bank of
England, recently declared “climate change will
be worse than COVID” unless steps are rapidly
taken to mitigate its effects around the world and
there is no doubt there are challenges for the events industry in
this area.

Live events and experiences are a great platform for driving

sustainability awareness and delivering change. Many agencies
are increasingly advising large corporates on how to meet the
sustainability criteria built into their procurement process and
ensuring briefs are based on the corporate values the organisa-
tion has signed up to. Events offer organisations the opportunity
to make sustainability real and tangible.

For Sam Wilson of Syntiro Associates, when organisations think

about their sustainability credentials, they should look at the
triple bottom line – people, profit and planet and identify where
changes in behaviour can be embedded. “It is no longer OK for
any business to just focus on the economic,” she says, “busi-
nesses need to integrate social and environmental parts of their
business model and decision making.”

Many events agencies are at the vanguard of the green revolu-

tion as their own employees tend to be young. Generation Z in

Yet, the COVID-19 pandemic has devastated the events indus-

in a responsible and ethical way. However, what is important to
one business, be that the customer, venue or event management
company, may be different to another.

The research we conducted showed varied positions, primarily

around plastics, energy and waste. All were important, but the
priorities changed. How does one begin to standardise, when
different perspectives and agendas have to be factored in? Also,
who are we to judge one agenda against another, the hearts are
collectively in the right place.

In my mind, having trawled through the results of the research,

and reached out to my peers in the industry, I believe standardi-
sation and accreditation is something we need to work up to. For
now, we need to encourage action regardless of the level, with-
out judging the agenda or the intent. As a starting point, the mia
has included a more robust entry level sustainable criteria in its
recently enhanced AIM Secure accreditation. The UK quality
standard, which is simple and easy to understand and execute,
is trusted by the customer and booking agents alike.

Once everyone is roughly on the same page we can then look to

go through the gears and continue to set further parameters that
can be easily followed and that reward genuine action. Enhanced
levels of accreditation can then help the buyer help reward those
that take the most action. This way we’re incentivising good
sustainability practice and supporting all customers in making
the right choices.

If we can then take the jargon out, it will also make things that Jo Austin - Head of Venue Sales - Lime Venue Portfolio
little bit easier. But simplicity isn’t always easy, as the sayings
go, making things simple takes time. However, the incentives are
there for our industry and there will be a limited period where
our customers will forgive us for moving sustainability down our
priority list. This is major trend, its critical to businesses, and
our planet, and so we need to show the world that it’s something
we’re addressing as part of our sector recovery.

As part of its support to aid the sector’s recovery, the mia has
environmental social governance as a key focus and I’m really
looking forward to taking a leading role in helping venues as they
strive to reach their individual sustainability goals.

An inclusive approach
