SPECIFICATION: M8-IV
STEAM TRACING OF OIL PIPING & EQUIPMENT

1.00.00 INTRODUCTION

The Oil handling and transfer system covers HFO and LDO. The HFO is a
highly viscous fluid, hence to reduce the viscosity and flowability of fuel oil
steam tracing is considered.

2.00.00 SCOPE OF SUPPLY

The scope of supply covers entire steam tracing of the fuel oil piping, pumps
and other equipment coming in the HFO unloading and transfer system. The
generally will be on follows.

2.01.00 HFO unloading pumps.

2.02.00 Suction strainers in HFO lines.

2.03.00 Piping, fittings valves from wagon unloading to the inlet of the HFO unloading
pump; unloading pumps to storage tank and all other necessary piping.

2.04.00 Drain oil piping.

2.05.00 Oil recovery piping.

2.06.00 Steam piping from terminal point to all consumption points.

2.07.00 Condensate piping.

2.08.00 Steam traps, drains, vent, y strainers, as required. In short, steam tracing
system whenever required in full fuel oil package specification.

2.09.00 Control valves, isolation valves etc.

2.10.00 All steam lines required for floor cleaning. Oil heating in wagon etc.

2.11.00 Entire condensate piping terminated in flash tank or oil water separator.

2.12.00 Oil water separator.

2.13.00 Thermal insulation for all traced lines and equipment, such as pumps, flash
tank etc.

2.14.00 Pipe supports, hangers, expansion joints etc.

3.00.00 CODES & STANDARDS

3.05.00 All other related IS/BS/ASTM code not specifically mentioned but required.

4.00.00 DESIGN & CONSTRUCTION

4.01.00 GENERAL

Heating of steel piping systems should be considered in the following cases.

- All process lines carrying liquids, which become too viscous to be

handled or congeal at ambient temperature unless flushing facilities
are provided, e.g. bitumen, paraffin waxes, heavy fuel oils etc.

- Pipelines can be heated by one of the following methods

External steam tracing

Jacketing

4.02.00 EXTERNAL STEAM HEATING

Pipelines may be heated externally by means of steam tracers carried in

close contact with the piping and insulated together with the piping.

This type of heating shall be used for inside plot piping and for outside plot
lines, containing a number of fittings and valves.

Depending on pipe size and severity of service, single or multiple tracers

should be used.

Generally the tracers shall be made of schedule 80, seamless steel pipe in
sizes 15 mm or 20 mm

As guidance as to the number and size of tracers required for different line
sizes and conditions, the following table may be used.

Number and size (in. of tracers)

* Initial temperature means the line contents displaceable or pumpable.

10 mm. OD copper tubing may be used for tracing of process and utility lines
upto to 40 mm., instruments and instrument piping and may be spirally
wrapped where required.

The tracers shall follow the contours of the piping to be heated, starting at the
highest point and sloping towards the steam trap, pockets shall be avoided.

One or more tracers may be connected to one common steam supply line,
but must be provided with individual steam traps.

For horizontal lines, single and/or multiple tracers shall run along the
underside of the pipe or at either side of the supporting tees, if any. For
vertical pipelines single tracers shall be straight or spirally wound, multiple
tracers shall be equally spaced around the periphery of the pipe.

Where feasible, small piping, up to 40 mm, requiring steam heating may be

ground and insulated together with one common tracer in between.

Tracers at straight lines shall be provided with expansion loops at intervals of

approx. 25 m. At flanges the expansion loops should be provide with socket
weld unions to permit dismantling of the piping, where required.

The maximum length of tracers for steam pressures of 3.5 kg/cm shall not
exceed 50 m, measured from the point of steam supply to the steam trap.

For lower steam pressures the tracer length may be relatively shorter. The
minimum length is 15 m.

4.03.00 STEAM JACKETING

The line to be heated should pass through the center of a alarger-diameter

steam line. This system should be applied for severe services where a high
heat input is required.

It should be noted that the wall thickness of the inner pipe may require
checking against external pressure.

For this purpose stream pressures upto 12 kg/cm may be considered.

Butt welds, drains, vents or other connections to the inner pipe within the
jacket are not permitted.

If such connections are required, a gap must be left in the jacket, which shall
be sufficient to expose the welding on the inner pipe.

Steam traps with block valves should be installed at intervals of approx. 25

metres.

4.04.00 Steam jacketing for the equipment shall be carried out as per the
recommendation of the equipment supplier.

4.05.00 All valves in the steam lines shall be IBR.

4.06.00 The steam traps shall be provided.

4.07.00 Steam and condensate lines shall be properly thermally insulated.

4.08.00 The piping material shall be as indicated in piping specification no. M-5.

4.09.00 The number of traces shall be selected to maintain HFO temp of 50oC by
cutting of steam supply to required number of tracers.

5.00.00 MATERIAL OF CONSTRUCTION

The pipe & fittings shall be as specified in piping specification.

6.00.00 INSPECTION & TESTING

6.01.00 The pipe line shall be hydrotested.

The valves, traps etc. shall be tested as per the requirements given in piping
specification.

6.02.00 NDT requirements

(a) 10% of butt weld joints shall be radiographed.

(b) All fillet welds as well as butt welds shall be subjected to dye pentrant
test.

(c) The acceptance of NDT will be as per ASME standards.
