Diversity in the classroom

Diversity is everything that makes people different from each other. We have to create a safe, supportive
and purposeful environment for students.

Accommodations/Differentiation/Modifications

Each student has individual needs so that is important how instructions are delivered (accomodation),

here the purpose is to ensure equal Access to the same content.

We focus on how a child will demostrate learning (differentiation) so we take into consideration the

individual needs. In some cases, we have to know what a child will learn, according to his or her possibilities,

and if neccesary, we have to make any change (modification), in this case we allow fewer ítems to be

completed.

Special Concerns

(Classroom management items, medication information, etc).

In the classroom, We have to develop effective working relationships with our students. Also, we have to
establish standards of behavior that promote student learning.

UDL Procedure

 To start the class, play a fun song and ask students to try and guess what they will study.
The house song by BUSY BEAVERS https://youtu.be/DR5qPNPGCmY. This song is
Before
great for teaching rooms of the house as it includes vocabulary related to the parts of the
the
lesson house and the key sentences “where is daddy? - he is in the (bedroom)”
 Draw a simple house on the board and try to elicit the rooms of the house words from the
students.
 Practise singing the song few times. To make more fun the song, give each student a room
picture card and ask them stand up when they hear their room in the song.

Durin  Teach rooms vocababulary

g the Before class, cut out some pictures of household objects from a magazine/catalog: one for
lesson each of the rooms of a house, for example:

bed (for the bedroom), refrigerator (for the kitchen), TV (for the living room), etc.
o On the board draw a picture of a house. Make sure you draw it as big as posible.
o Elicit the words house, tree and sun. You can also teach/elicit "roof" and "chimney" as extra
vocabulary.
o Next, hold up the cut out "bed" magazine picture and elicit/teach the word. Ask one student
to come up to the board stick the picture in one of the rooms. Do the same with the other
pictures, each time eliciting the word and getting a student to stick on your house so that
each room has a picture in it.

 Do "Rooms of a house Posters"

Put your students into groups where you can integrate your student with special needs.
Give each group the following:
o one large piece of card / construction paper a magazine/catalog with lots of photos of
household objects (at least one per groups) scissors and glue.
o Assign each group a room of a house and get the groups to write the room name at the top
of their construction paper. So, for example, one group will make a "bedroom" poster,
another a "living room poster", etc. If your class is small and you only have 3 groups, each
group will have two pieces of construction paper (therefore they will do two room posters).
o Tell everyone to look through their magazines/catalogs and cut out pictures to stick on their
poster for their room.
o When each group has finished, tell everyone that they have to write the words for the things
they have stuck on their posters..When all of the posters are complete, get each group to
stick theirs to the walls of the classroom - try and get them evenly spaced around the room.

o When everyone has finished, put students into pairs. Teach the phase:
Have you got a BIG BED?

After  Practise the keywords by showing the flashcards and asking students to repeat after you.
the  Once the students have practised enough, its time to for a another fun flashcard game to
lesson
practise the key expressions such as where is mom, dad or sister?

UDL Assessment
 Students may be able to create a poster or a model with different recycling material to show what
they know.
 In our classroom, there are included spaces for quiet individual work, small or large group work. If
students need to tune out noise, they can choose to wear earbuds or headphones during independent
work.
 students get feedback . At the end of the lesson, teacher may talk with individual students about
lesson goals. If they didn’t meet the goals, they’re encouraged to do it again..
 Students have many options for reading, including print and digital.

Observations:

Working on this lesson planning, I discovered a different way to organize

my classes taking account the variety of students that I have in.
