What is lent?
 Lent is one of the five liturgical
seasons in the liturgical year.
 During this time the people of God are
called to commemorate and reflect on
the Lord’s passion through spiritual
preparation, conversion, and penance.
 This holy season is an invitation to
renew our baptismal call. To live as
sons and daughters of God and
disciples of Christ.
Meaning of lent:
 Lent is a Germanic word that means
spring season
 Lantin = Quadragesima meaning
“forty days”
 Spring is a time of change and
renewal
 Lent is a spiritual spring, a time for
spiritual growth and renewal.
Lent’s beginning
 Begins on Ash Wednesday.
 Ash Wednesday is celebrated by
other Christian denominations such
as: Lutherans, Episcopalians,
Anglicans, and Methodists.
Why is it called Ash Wednesday? &
meaning
 Ash Wednesday is so-called because
on this day ashes are used to mark
Catholics on their foreheads as a sign
of conversion and repentance
 the ashes used on Ash Wednesday
come from the blessed palms left over
from the previous year.
 The palms are burnt to produce ashes.
Ashes are considered sacramentals
and are blessed before their use.
 The ashes are a symbol of repentance
and conversion
 The ashes act as a reminder that we
are called to die to sin and return to
God wholeheartedly
 The ashes are a symbol that reminds
us that life is fragile and that one must
be ready to face our creator.
What phrases are used to impose the
ashes?
 During Ash Wednesday service two
phrases or formulas are used to
impose the ashes
 “Turn away from sin and be faithful to
the gospel”

AN “outward sign of inward grace instituted
by Christ for our sanctification:

OUTWARD SIGNS OF INWARD
GRACE
OUTWARD SIGN- is something which we
can see, hear, or feel in which in turn stands
for something which you cannot see.
GRACE- is the free and undeserved gift from
God through Jesus Christ, to help us respond
to his call to become children of God and to
partake in the divine nature and eternal life.
For example, in the sacrament of baptism,
the outward sign involves pouring water over
the candidate’s head. The inward grace of
baptism is the candidate becoming an
adopted child of God and his/her sins being
forgiven.
 Jesus himself is the sacrament
 Jesus is the primordial sacrament
because in his incarnation, the second
person, the only begotten son of God,
The scriptures says ”and the word

fundamental sacrament because it is
called to be an invisible presence of
God’s will in humanity. The church
makes present the living presence of
God in the world

Salvation is the promise that God made in the
Old Testament
The highest form of worship to God is the
Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist
Sacramentals, the church has always taught
that there are ways and symbols we can use
to help us become stronger, closer to God,
and invoke his presence. They are not
equivalent to the sacraments since they do
not arise from the saving ministry of Jesus,
instead, they have been instituted by the
church to help her members. Examples of
these are rosaries, holy images, the sign of
the cross, and other actions like going on a
pilgrimage.
LESSON 12
Praying is communicating with God
“intimate conversion with God who we know
loves us”
The OUR FATHER is called the “prayer of the
church” because it is the prayer that is recited
in almost all the sacraments and its recitation
is an important part of the Holy Mass.
It is also the perfect prayer because it comes
from Jesus and it contains all form of prayers.
