Syllabus
This unit focuses on the practice and concepts of sustainable strategic management through the introduction of
appropriate theoretical models, frameworks and practices of sustainable organisational strategies. The central
issue of the unit is the achievement of competitive advantage: internal and external drivers of competitive
advantage, the link between strategy formulation and implementation, the role of strategic leadership in
formulating and implementing strategy for creating and sustaining competitive advantage.

Introduction
Strategic Management today demands advanced skills, navigating complexities such as international expansion,
network advantage, and resource optimisation. The essence of this critical management aspect lies in adept
analysis. Managers must stay abreast of effective strategies through insightful analysis and implementation. This
unit is meticulously designed to address these contemporary demands, emphasising practical analysis tools
practitioners use.

From diverse analytical approaches to tackling real-world business challenges, students will engage in hands-on
analyses essential for the workplace. The curriculum is curated to encompass current issues and incorporate the
latest analytical perspectives. This unit offers invaluable insights for both seasoned managers and those aspiring
to leadership roles, providing practical analysis skills relevant to real business scenarios. Through interactive class
activities and purposeful assignments, we ensure a dynamic and enriching learning experience grounded in

Unit Learning Outcomes

another to deepen your understanding and learning of knowledge and events. As such, this means these discussions
and activities are reflective, cooperative and designed to share learning. The focus of these class discussions and
learning activities is to share knowledge (personal and obtained via additional research), ask questions, seek
clarification and deepen understanding of unit materials as they apply to strategic management. Your class is your
learning community whose success of the community depends on the active participation of every student.
You are allocated a maximum of 20 per cent of your unit grade for Assessment 1 by evaluating your efforts in sharing
your own personal learning experiences, outcomes and insights on weekly activities; increasing engagement of peers
through raising key questions; expanding class learning by offering insights, thoughts and suggestions to others'
questions; succinctness and quality of contributions to class discussions and class learning activities; your integration
of unit material and scholarly references into discussions.

l Instructions for completing Assessment 1


Starting from week 3, you need to write 400-500 words every week about one of the weekly activities outlined in
Blackboard> Learning Modules. Submit your reflective notes to the Assessment folder via the Turnitin link. No
references or in-text citations are required. We will use Miro in class for weekly activities. Utilise your notes on Miro and
those of your classmates to answer the activity and write a reflective note highlighting what you have learned. Every
week, you can collect a maximum of two (2) marks.

Reflective notes allow one to explore and articulate personal thoughts and insights from experiences, activities, or
learning moments. When crafting reflective notes, it's essential to delve into your thoughts and feelings, examining
how a particular experience has influenced your understanding or perspectives about a topic. Start by describing the
experience objectively, then delve into your own feelings, and finally, reflect on the significance of the experience in
your learning journey. Consider the broader implications of what you've learned. This process not only reinforces your
understanding of the subject matter but also enhances your ability to apply insights in future situations.

The following Rubric is the grading key for assessing your learning portfolio contribution. It provides some background
on the differences between meeting the minimum standards for the assignment versus outstanding contributions to
the assignment.

There is no formatting requirement for weekly submission. No reference list is required. ​The word limitation is
between 400 and 500 words.

l Submission deadline
You need to submit your reflective notes within one week. For example, if the activity is from week 3, the deadline is on
Friday of week 4. Late submissions are only allowed if you request an extension and provide a valid reason.

ASSESSMENT TWO

Digital strategies are like well-thought-out plans that use technology to help businesses achieve their goals.
Businesses rely heavily on digital platforms to connect with customers, make things run smoothly, and stay
competitive. A good digital strategy involves using technology smartly in areas like marketing, sales, and internal
processes. This can mean using online stores and data to make smart decisions, connecting with people through
social media, and ensuring the online presence is smooth. Because technology keeps changing, businesses
must adapt and develop new ideas to stay in the game. A successful digital strategy comes from understanding
the people you're trying to reach, keeping up with what's happening in your industry, and always trying to improve. A
good digital strategy makes a business look good online and helps it succeed in the digital age.

In this unit, you will learn how to analyse and evaluate digital strategies.

l Instructions for completing the Assessment 2

You will find a case on Blackboard explaining an organisation’s digital strategies. Your task is to work through the
case and analyse the organisation’s digital strategies based on the 7-principle model. To complete the
assignment, you need to

1. Identify the digital strategies used by the business.

2. Evaluate the level of digital change using boldness and commitment criteria.

3. Apply the seven principles of the digital strategy model to position the business's current digital strategy in
the digital strategy matrix.

4. Recommend actions for the business to enhance its presence in the digital market.

ASSESSMENT 3

Your assignment is to carry out a strategic planning exercise for a chosen company from a provided list. Your task
involves thoroughly assessing different aspects of strategic management planning. Afterwards, you are expected to
recommend the most suitable business strategy for your selected organisation and clearly explain your choice.

l Instructions for completing the Assessment 3

To complete this assignment, you need to

1. Form a team of 3 or 4 students before week 4.

2. Select a local company for your analysis.

3. Use PESTLE analysis to analyse the company's external environment (Macro-level external analysis

4. Use Stakeholder Analysis (Salience model) to identify the company's key stakeholders and their impact on
the company. (Micro level external analysis)

5. Use the VIRN test to identify the company’s essential resources and/or capabilities (at least four) and
assess the competitive power of each of those resources and/or capabilities. (Internal analysis)

6. Use Porter’s Five Forces Framework, assess the nature /strength of the competitive pressures and suggest
whether the collective strength of the five forces (in your chosen industry) is conducive to good profitability.

7. Based on your analysis, recommend which of the five generic business-level strategies will be most
appropriate for your chosen organisation and justify your recommended choice.

Assessment Moderation

Fair assessment through moderation


Moderation describes a quality assurance process to ensure that assessments are appropriate to the learning
outcomes, and that students work is evaluated consistently by assessors. Minimum standards for the moderation
of assessments are described in the Assessment and Student Progression Manual, available from
policies.curtin.edu.au/findapolicy/

Pre-marking moderation
A co-assessor is assigned to this unit to review all assessment tasks and marking criteria/rubrics, and monitor and
confirm integrity of results. Assessment tasks are provided to students prior to the assessment task, marking
criteria are provided to students, assessors are provided with marking guides/rubric and sufficient information to
ensure fair and consistent evaluation of student work.
Intra-marking / Post-marking moderation
• Second marking of student work samples near grade boundaries
• Second marking of borderline student work; or a process of review and validation of decisions where
students have not met the pass requirements
• Second marking of outlier samples

Late assessment
Where the submission of a late assessment is permitted, late penalties will be consistently applied in this unit.
Where a late assessment is permitted for an assessment item or the entirety of the unit (refer to the Assessment
Schedule table in this Unit Outline) and the student does not have an approved assessment extension:

1. For assessment items submitted within the first 24 hours after the due date/time, students will be penalised
by a deduction of 5% of the total marks allocated for the assessment task;
2. For each additional 24 hour period commenced an additional penalty of 10% of the total marks allocated
for the assessment item will be deducted; and
3. Assessment items submitted more than 168 hours late (7 calendar days) will receive a mark of zero.

Where late assessment is NOT permitted for an assessment item or the entirety of the unit (refer to the
Assessment Schedule table in this Unit Outline) and the student does not have an approved assessment extension:

1. All assessment items submitted after the due date/time will receive a mark of zero.

Assessment extension
Where an application for an assessment extension is permitted for an assessment item(s) within this unit (refer to
the Assessment Schedule table in this Unit Outline):

1. A student who is unable to complete an assessment item by/on the due date/time as a result of exceptional
circumstances beyond the student’s control, may apply for an assessment extension on the Assessment
Extension Application Form as prescribed by the Academic Registrar. The form is available on the Forms
page at https://students.curtin.edu.au/essentials/forms-documents/forms/ and also within the student's
OASIS (My Studies tab – Quick Forms) account.
2. The student will be expected to submit their application for an Assessment Extension with supporting
documentation via the online form.
3. Timely submission of this information supports the assessment process. For applications that are declined,
delayed submission may have significant ramifications on the possible marks awarded.
4. An application may be accepted up to five working days after the due date/time of the assessment item
where the student is able to provide a verifiable explanation as to why they were not able to submit the
application prior to the assessment due date/time

Where an application for an assessment extension is NOT permitted for an assessment item(s) within this unit
(refer to the Assessment Schedule table in this Unit Outline):

1. All assessment items submitted after the due date/time will be subject to late penalties or receive a mark of
zero depending on the unit permitting late assessment submissions.

Academic Integrity Warnings
An Academic Integrity Warning may be issued to a student in limited circumstances and only where misconduct is
not involved.
Academic Misconduct
Staff members are required to report poor academic practice and suspected misconduct. Academic Misconduct
means conduct by a student that is dishonest or unfair in connection with any academic work. This includes all
types of plagiarism, cheating, collusion, falsification or fabrication of content, and behaviours like falsifying
medical certificates for extension. Contract cheating, the use of file sharing, translation services/apps,
paraphrasing tools (text-spinners), article generators, and assignment help websites also may be considered
academic misconduct.
Check your assessment instructions carefully before using any generative artificial intelligence (Gen-AI) software
(e.g. Chat GPT, Midjourney, GitHub Copilot, etc.). You are not permitted to use Gen-AI software in any assessment
task unless written permission is explicitly granted by the Unit Coordinator (e.g. within Blackboard or the
assignment specifications). If the use of Gen-AI software has been approved, you must document its use, apply
appropriate acknowledgement and attribution rules, and include a statement as to the nature and extent of the
use when submitting the assessment. Unapproved, inappropriate, or undisclosed use may be dishonest or unfair
behaviour, and thus considered misconduct. For further information on the use of Gen-AI software see the
Academic Integrity Website.
The longer term personal, social, and financial consequences of misconduct can be severe, so please ask your
tutors or unit coordinator if you need clarification or are unsure what to do. If your work is the subject of an
inquiry, you will be given an opportunity to respond and appropriate support will be provided. Academic work
under inquiry will not be graded until the process has concluded. Penalties for misconduct may include a warning,
a reduced or nil grade, a requirement to repeat the assessment, an annulled grade (ANN) or termination from the

Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Expectations


Curtin students are expected to have reliable internet access in order to connect to OASIS email and learning
systems such as Blackboard and Library Services.
You may also require a computer or mobile device for preparing and submitting your work.
In this unit, we will use Miro. Miro is the online collaborative whiteboarding platform that enables distributed
teams to work effectively together, from brainstorming with digital sticky notes to planning and managing agile
workflows. To kick things off, create a new board and add a frame to it. Every board is saved automatically.

Further Assessment Student Eligibility:
A student is eligible for consideration for further assessment if they:

l Are enrolled in a unit within their first 200 credit points of study in their course OR in a unit in their
final study period of a course; and
l Have attempted all required assessment tasks in the unit;
l Have not be found guilty of academic misconduct in the unit.

A student enrolled in a Bachelor level course may only be offered two Further Assessment opportunities in their
course. A student enrolled in all other courses may only be offered one Further Assessment opportunity. Please
note, Further Assessment are granted by the Board of Examiners.
Additional information about late assessments:

1. For assessment items submitted within the first 24 hours after the due date/time, students will be penalised
by a deduction of 5% of the total marks allocated for the assessment task;
2. For each additional 24-hour period commenced an additional penalty of 10% of the total marks allocated
for the assessment item will be deducted; and

Additional information about applications for extensions:

1. Applications for extensions MUST be supported by the attached work in progress. Assignment 1 and
Assignment 2 are introduced in week 1. These assignments have to be nearly completed by Week 7.
Applications for extension must make it clear how unforeseen circumstances which occured a couple of
days before the due date prevented a student to complete the assignment by the due date.
2. Applications for extension submitted after the due date will not be considered.
