Teens and social media addiction

Teenage social media addiction is very serious and a cause of worry!
Teenagers with a social media addiction have become so addicted to the virtual world that it has
impacted their real world, causing harmful effects on their real-life relationships and responsibilities.
Paradigm Treatment Centres explain that social media addiction most often involves two distinct
characteristics of addiction: the extensive amount of time spent on social media and the underlying
reasons why they’re engaged online.
A teen with a social media addiction has an enormous desire to participate in the virtual world. The teen
will feel internal pressure to check updates and notifications, post a photo or engage in other online
activities.
Another common characteristic of teens who are addicted to social media is the desire to create an
attractive and “likable” virtual view of their life. They may spend more time taking photos of a “fun
activity” than they actually spend enjoying and participating in it. They may even become so consumed
with taking photos of themselves on the beach or at a concert that they actually fail to enjoy being at the
beach or concert.
While being a teen is full of pressure and stress to be “good enough”, it is even more so for teens with a
social media addiction. The constant pressure to gain “likes” and comments stops them from finding their
true identity in an authentic way.
Teenagers can become addicted to social media for a number of reasons. They may feel: overwhelmed,
lonely, bored, stressed, depressed, anxious, disconnected, etc. And the virtual world may act as an escape
from the problems of the real world…
