Lesson 1.1
Finding the Area of a Given Circle
What’s In

We have learned in the past lesson on how to solve routine and non-routine
problems involving circumference of a circle. In solving problems involving
circumference measure, know the diameter/radius and the formula. The formula in
finding the circumference of a circle if the diameter is given is C = 𝝅 𝒙 𝒅. If the radius is
given, the formula is C = 𝟐 𝒙 𝝅 𝒙 r or C = 𝟐𝝅𝒓.

To understand further, answer the following:

1. Mr. Marata is laying out a circular garden. Its radius is 40 meters. What is its
circumference?
2. A car tire has a diameter of 60cm. Find the distance around the tire.

What’s New

A dog is tied to an iron pole in the front yard. His leash is 2 meters long and
he runs around in circles pulling the leash as far as it can go. How much area does
the dog have to run around it?

What Is It
You have learned from the previous lesson that the distance around the circle
is the circumference. Meanwhile, if we want to know the space covered by the
interior of the circle, we refer to it as the area. The area of a circle with radius (r), is
given by the formula; A = r x r x 𝝅 or A = 𝝅r2.
To solve for the answer to the problem, these tips will help find the area of
circle.
1. Draw a circle. Find the radius or diameter.

2m

2. Always remember that radius is half of the measurement of a diameter.

3. Remember that the ratio of the circumference of a circle to the diameter
is the same for all circles. The circumference of any circle is about 3.14
times the diameter. The ratio is represented by the Greek letter 𝛑 spelled
pi and pronounced as pie.

3
More examples:

1. A semi-circle shaped rug has a diameter of 6 6 feet. What is the area of

the rug?

6 6 ft. 3 ft.

Solution:

𝝅
A = 𝝅r2. or A= x d2
4
𝟑.𝟏𝟒
= 3.14 x (3ft)2 = x (6ft.)2
4
= 3.14 x 3 x 3 = 0.785 x 6 x 6
= 3.14 x 9 = 0.785 x 36
= 28.26 ft.2 = 28.26 ft.2

2. 3. 4.
9 meter 13cm 7.25dm

Solutions:
𝝅
2. A = 4 x d2 3. A = 𝝅r2. 4. A = 𝝅r2.
𝟑.𝟏𝟒
= x (9)2 = 3.14 x (13)2 = 3.14 x (7.25)2
4
= 0.785 x 9 x 9 = 3.14 x 13 x 13 = 3.14 x 7.25 x 7.25
= 0.785 x 81 = 3.14 x 169 = 3.14 x 52.56
= 63.585 m2 = 530.66 cm2 = 175.84 dm2

Lesson 1.2
Solving Routine and Non-routine Problems
Involving the Area of a Circle

What’s In

In the previous lesson that we had, we learned on how to find the area of a
given circle. Do you still remember the formulas in finding the area of a circle?

A = 𝝅r2 when the given is radius

when the given is diameter

What’s New

Do you have a vegetable garden at home? What vegetables are planted in

your garden? Why do we need to eat vegetables every day?
Let us read, analyze, and solve the word problem below.

Abendan’s family loves to eat vegetables every day. They have a circular
garden in their backyard. What is the area of their garden whose radius is 5 meters?

What is It

To solve the area of the circular garden, we must consider the following
steps in solving a routine word problem:
1. Understand the problem. Know what is asked and the given facts
Asked: The area of the circular garden
Given: radius = 5 meters
2. Plan. Determine the operation to be used and write the number
sentence
Operation: Multiplication
Number Sentence: 3.14 x 5 x 5 = N (From the formula: A = 𝝅r2)
3. Solve. Show the solution to the problem.
Solution:

Another way of solving the problem is to find the square of 5

(5 x 5 = N) first before multiplying it by the value of pi
(approximately 3.14).
Study the solution below.

6
4. Check and Look Back. Review the answer if it is reasonable and state
the
complete answer.
Since we multiplied the approximate value of pi (3.14) and the
square of 5 or (5 x 5 = 25) to get 78.50 m2, to check if our answer is
reasonable, we will work backward and do the inverse operation of
multiplication which is division.

Study the process below.

After dividing 78.5 by 5 and get 15.7, and dividing 15.7 by 5 and get
3.14, we can say that 78.5 m2 is reasonable and it is the area of the
circular garden.
Answer: 78.5 m2 or 78.5 square meters

To solve routine word problems, we follow these quick and easy steps:
a. Understand – Know what is asked and the given facts
b. Plan – Know the operation and write the number sentence
c. Solve – Show the solution to the problem.
d. Check and Look Back – Review the answer if it is reasonable and state the

complete answer.

Now, let us read, analyze, and solve another word problem below.

Chan’s family has a circular garden with an area of 254.34 m2. What is the
radius?

The problem above is an example of a non-routine word problem involving

area of the circle. Let us use a solving strategy to get the correct answer.
Strategy to Use: Working Backward (using the inverse operations)

7
We already know that to get the area of a circle we simply multiply the
approximate value of pi (𝜋 = 3.14) by the square of the radius. The inverse
operation of multiplication is division.
To solve the problem, we will divide the area of the circular garden by the
approximate value of pi which is 3.14.
254.34 ÷ 3.14 = 81

To find the radius of the circle, we will get the square root of 81. By the
way, a square root is a number which produces a specified quantity when
multiplied by itself. Since 81 is a perfect square, therefore, the square root of 81
is 9 because 9 x 9 equals 81.
So, the radius of Chan’s circular garden is 9 meters.
We can solve non-routine word problems by using appropriate solving
strategies. Here are the following sample problem solving strategies which you
can use in solving non-routine word problems:
1. Work backward 5. Act it out/ make a model.

2. Look for a pattern 6. Make and solve a simpler problem.

3. Table method 7. Making a drawing/ illustration/diagram

4. Guess and check 8. Break up the problem into smaller ones
