A Description of the ‘Umrah

Note: This is a summarized compilation from: (1) the book, “Rites of Hajj and Umrah from the Book & Sunnah & Narrations of the
Pious Predecessors” by Shaikh al-Albaanee; (2) a recorded lecture by Shaikh Saleh as-Saleh – may Allaah have mercy upon them;
(3) “Tabseerat-un-Naasik Bi-Ahkaam Al-Manaasik” of Shaikh ‘Abdul-Muhsin al-‘Abbaad al-Badr – may Allaah preserve him.

NOTE: This document has been prepared strictly for this journey only, please do not distribute.

0) Ikhlaas (Sincerity to Allaah) & A Good Intention.

1) Ihraam & Talbiyyah
a. It is recommended to take Ghusl (full ritual bath), like one does for Janaabah.
b. It is also recommended to use good perfume (before entering the state of Ihram).
c. One then wears the Ihram cloth.
d. If it is time for a prayer, one prays before entering Ihraam. It is recommended for one whose miqaat
is Dhul-Hulayfah (e.g. those coming from Madeenah) to pray there (at Dhul-Hulayfah).
e. One enters the state of Ihram by saying:

O Allaah! Here I am for 'Umrah”)
f. Then one says the Talbiyyah repeatedly (until start of Tawaaf), sunnah for men to raise voice:

(“Here I am O Allaah, here I am. Here I am, You have no partner, here I am. Surely all praise is due to
You, and every bounty is from You, and all dominion is Yours. You have no partner.”)

g. It is recommended to say the Talbiyyah often especially when ascending or descending.

2) Upon getting to Masjid al-Haram (The Scared Mosque)

a. Just like any other Masjid, it is Sunnah to enter putting the right foot in first and say:

(“In the Name of Allaah. O Allaah! Send salaah and salaam upon the Messenger of Allaah. I seek refuge
with Allaah, The Great One, and with His Noble Face, and His eternal authority from the accursed devil.
O Allaah, open the gates of Your mercy for me.”)

b. One enters with humility and humbleness, bringing to mind the favor of Allaah upon him in making
it easy for him to reach His Sacred House.
3) Tawaaf (Going round the Ka’abah 7 times)
a. In a state of ritual purity (wudoo’), one approaches the Black Stone to begin Tawaaf
b. One kisses the Black Stone if it is possible without hurting others, otherwise one touches the stone

by hand or by another object & kisses what he touches it with and says: ‫أَكبَر‬ ‫ ه‬,ِ‫سم هللا‬
c. If that is not possible, one makes a sign towards it and says only: “‫أَكبَر‬ ‫” ه‬
Note: As ‘Umar – may Allaah be pleased with him – mentioned when he kissed the black stone: “I
know that you are a stone – you do not harm nor bring benefit – and if not that I saw the
Prophet ‫ صلى هللا عليه وسلم‬kissing you, I would not have kissed you.” [al-Bukhaari]
d. One repeats either of the above (b or c), every time one reaches the Black Stone.
e. One walks towards his right, keeping the Ka’abah on the left
f. On reaching the Yemeni Corner (the corner just before the black stone), one touches it if possible
without harming others (NOT pointing at it or kissing it).
g. Between the Yemeni Corner & the Black Stone, one recites:
{"Our Lord! Give us in this World that which is good and in the Hereafter that which is good, and save
us from the torment of the Fire!"} [Baqarah 2:201]

h. There is no other particular du’aa or dhikr for the Tawaaf. Rather one makes any du’aa, dhikr
Qur’aan recitation as he wishes.
i. One doesn’t touch the rest of the Ka’abah besides the Black Stone & Yemeni Corner.
j. One goes round the Ka’abah a total of seven laps, repeating the above throughout.
Also, in this Tawaaf it is Sunnah to do two things:
k. Ar-Ramal: Brisk (quick & energetic) walking with close steps (for men in first 3 rounds only)
l. Al-Idtibaa’: Placing the 2 edges of the upper garment over the left shoulder and its middle
underneath the right armpit such that the right shoulder is exposed (throughout the Tawaaf).
m. After finishing the 7 rounds of Tawaaf, one covers his right shoulder and moves to the “Place of
Ibrahim” reciting:

{“And take you (people) the Maqam (place) of Ibrahim (Abraham) [or the stone on which Ibrahim
(Abraham) stood while he was building the Ka'bah] as a place of prayer (for some of your prayers, e.g. two
Rak'at after the Tawaf of the Ka'bah at Makkah)”} [Baqarah 2:125].
n. Then he goes behind the station of Ibrahim, if easy, to observe two light rak’ahs; otherwise he can
pray anywhere in the Masjid. In the first Rakaa’ (after Surat-ul-Faatihah), he recites Surat-ul-
Kafirun [Soorah 109] and in the second, Surat-ul-lkhlas [Soorah 112].
o. Drinking Zamzam: You then go to Zamzam to drink whatever you can & pour on the head.
p. Then one returns to the Black Stone making Takbeer & touching it according to the preceding
description.

4) The Sa’ee
a. Then he goes out to the Mesa'a to do the Sa’ee. When he nears As-Safaa he recites:

{“Verily! As-Safa and Al-Marwah (two mountains in Makkah) are of the Symbols of Allah.”}
[Baqarah 2:158]

b. And then he says: (‫)نَـ ْب َدأُ ِبَا بَ َدأَ اَللُ بِه‬ [We begin with what Allah began with]
c. He begins with As-Safaa & ascends it until he is able to see the Ka'bah.
d. Facing the Ka'bah & raising the hands, he makes Tawheed of Allaah and Takbeer of Him and says
(three times, supplicating with whatever he wishes in between):

e. One then proceeds towards al-Marwah at normal walking pace.
f. On getting to the first green light one runs quickly till one reaches the next green light where you
continue walking at a normal pace. One does the same on the way back from al-Marwah.
g. At the Hill of al-Marwah, ascend it, face the Ka’abah, raise your hands, and make the same
supplication you made on as-Safaa
h. Counting the sa’ee: From as-Safaa to al-Marwah is counted as one sa’ee and from al-Marwah back
to as-Safaa is counted as the second, and so on. (i.e the 7th sa’ee will end at al-Marwah).

5) Shaving / Shortening the Hair

It is better to shave than to shorten – as the Prophet ‫ صلى هللا عليه وسلم‬made du’aa 3ce for those that shave and 1ce
for those that only shorten.
