Knee-Warmers „Wallace"

Kneewarmer for Running, Hiking …

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P1jCoZjKaD0

My nearly twenty-years old son wanted some knitted kneewarmers …

Searching the www was succesful:

But: These shouldn’t be the one.

Ok: Get out colorful wool and needles and off you go

Linen-Stitch:
1. row (right side): *knit 1, slip 1 with yarn in front* repeat from *
2. row (wrong side): pearl if knitting in rows and knit if knitting rounds
3. row (right side): *slip 1 with yarn in front, knit 1* repeat from*
4. row (wrong side): pearl if knitting in rows and knit if knitting rounds

ÜM (Überzogene Masche):
This is the first stitch in a short row. Vivian Hsu explains perfectly how to work the first stich in a
(german) short-row:

These Kneewarmers were knitted for thighs with a circumference of about 42 cm measured 10 cm
above the knee.

You need: 100 g 4-ply sock yarn, LL 420m/100 g
Needles 3,0 mm DPN

Cast On: 100 st Depending on your size! Go up or down with the number of
stitches, it won’t be a problem as long as you take a multiply of 4.

The beginning of round is Needle 1.

Needle 1 and 4: 23 st
Needle 2 and 3: 27 st

Cuff thighs:
Round 1 to 20: *k1, p2, k1* repeat from * (25 times)

Round 21 bis 32:

Needle 1 (23 st): k2, p1, *k3, p1* repeat from * (5 times)

I started with the knee in round 33.
Knit once more Needle 1 {k2, p1, * k3, p1* repeat from * (5 times)}

Knee: German short rows on needle 2 and 3:

Arrangement:
Divide your stitches in three parts. The middle third is knitted in Linen-Stitch.
I prefer knitting the Linen-Stitch pattern with an uneven number of stitches, therefore I increased
one stich and my middle third goes over 19 stitches.

Short Rows:
R1: k18 – Linen-Stitch 19 (start with k1!) – k18
R2: ÜM, p54
R3: ÜM, k17 – Linen-Stitch 19 (start with sl1!) – k16
R4: ÜM, p50, this means: do not knit the second last and the ÜM stitches!
R5: ÜM, k15 – Linen-Stitch 19 (start with k1!) – k14 M
R6: ÜM, p46
R7: ÜM, k13 – 19 Linen-Stitch 19 (start with sl1!) – k12
R8: ÜM, p42
R9: ÜM, k11 – Linen-Stitch 19 (start with k1!) – k10
R10: ÜM, p38
R11: ÜM, k9 – Linen-Stitch 19 (start with sl1!) – k8
R12: ÜM, p34
R13: ÜM, k7 – Linen-Stitch 19 (start with k1!) – k6
R14: ÜM, p30
R15: ÜM, k5 – Linen-Stitch 19 (start with sl1!) – k4
R16: ÜM, p26
R17: ÜM, k3 – 19 M Linen-Stitch 19 (start with k1!) – k2
R18: ÜM, p22

Intermediate Rounds:
Needle 2 and 3: ÜM, k1 – Linen-Stitch 19 (start with sl1!) – k18
Needle 4: knit the stitches like you see them {*p1, k3* repeat from * (5 times), p1, k2} AND
decrease one stich: ssk with the 6th and 7th stitch
Needle 1: knit the stitches like you see them {k2, p1, *3 re, 1 li* repeat from * (5 times)} AND
decrease one stich: k2t with the 17th and 18th stitch.
Needle 2 and 3: knit
Needle 4: knit the stitches like you see them AND decrease one stich: ssk with the 6th and 7th
stitch
Needle 1: knit the stitches like you see them AND decrease one stich: k2t with the 16th and 17th
stitch.

Check your stitches: You should now have 21 st on Needle 1 and 21 st on Needle 4.
Nd 4: five st in pattern followed by a knit-st, then 15 st in pattern
Nd 1: 15 st in pattern followed by a knit-st, then five st in pattern

Now knit again the german short rows (R1 to R18) over needle 2 and 3.
Knit the two intermediate rounds in the same manner as written above with decrease:
First intermediate round: decrease one stitch on needle 4 (ssk with the 6th and 7th) and one stich on
needle 1 (k2t with the 15th and 16th)
Second intermediate round: decrease one stitch on needle 4 (ssk with the 6th and 7th) and one stich
on needle 1 (k2t with the 14th and 15th)
You have a decrease of 8 stitches in the knee, consistent with rib pattern.

Now knit again the german short rows (R1 to R18) over needle 2 and 3.
Knit the intermediate rounds without decrease:
Needle 1 and 4: rip pattern
Needle 2 and 3: knit
End with Needle 4, so the beginning of the rounds is again on needle 1.

Cuff Lower Thigh:

Round 1:
Needle1 (19 st): k2, p1, *k3, p1* repeat from * 4 times
Needle 2 (28 st): k2, p2, *ssk, p2* repeat from * 4 times, k2, p2, k2, p2tog
Needle 3 (27 st): p1, k2, p2, k2, p2 *k2t, p2* repeat from * 4 times, k2,
Needle 4 (19 st): *p1, k3* repeat from * 4 times, p1, k2

Round 2 to 12:
Needle 1 (19 st): *k1, p2, k1* repeat from * 4 times, k1, p2
Needle 2 and 3 (46 st): *k2, p2* repeat from * 11 times, 2re
Needle 4 (19 st): p2, k1, *k1, p2, k1* repeat from * 4 times
