PHILIPPINE POPULAR CULTURE

04 THE CREATION AND CONSUMPTION OF POPULAR CULTURE
04 ACTIVITY 1

Think of an example for the following in the context of Philippine popular culture:
 Flops
 Fads
 Sleeper Hits
 Icon or event that gained a cult following
 Blockbuster
 Parodies, sampling, and remixes

FLOPS

 Boy Pick-Up: The Movie

Synopsis: There is a secret fight in the name of love. All soldiers are pickaxes. Using
the kidnapper's ropes as a weapon to get to the beautiful Neneng B, a war is brewing in
the dark recesses of the subway. And among them is an undefeated champion: the
Pick-up Boy. Legendary, enigmatic, and haunting, that is his appeal to most who don't
understand what his jokes are about, yet his words touch their hearts. According to
Ching MA, one of the problems with Boy Pick-Up: The Movie is that the narrative is
predictable. Some characters are introduced in the first 30 minutes but are quickly
forgotten when the next plot point comes along.

people's expectations on social media because it was flabbergasted and trending, but it
didn't get much attraction after the episodes were released because many people were
expecting much in the series

FADS

 Colored Rubber Bands

What they were: Cheap rubber bands that came in extraordinary colors. We bought
them by the piece or by the dozen in the “palengke” and sari-sari shop, why we loved
them: These elastic bands were designed for the office and school and cobbled
together into bracelets. This cool weird girl from school wore colorful rubber bands
covering half of her forearms and you wanted them too! They were the retro version of
today's dance bands, only more useful; during the break, we tied them to a long rope to
play Chinese garter or 10-20.

 Trese
Trese is a Filipino animated show streaming television series based on Budjette Tan
and Kajo Baldisimo's Filipino comic series of the same name. Trese's research led her
to an aswang clan near the bridge and a corrupt city councilman when a ghost shows
up dead and train passengers go missing.

 Pabebe Wave

In 2015, the "Pabebe wave" grew in appeal. The Pabebe wave entails making a
modest, delicate hand motion. The phrase "pabebe wave" was created by the Philippine
media to describe a gesture in which someone imitates the waving motion used by Miss
Universe candidates. In the "Juan For All, All for Juan" section of the Philippine
noontime program Eat Bulaga, AlDub made it well-known. A variation of the beauty-
queen wave, it was initiated by Maine Mendoza's character Yaya

Dub and exchanged between Alden Richards and her.

SLEEPER HITS

 "Sleeper hit movies defy the formulaic equation as they break the norms
and still perform better over time."

One More Chance (2007) and Cathy García Molina's Four Sisters and a Wedding
(2013) are examples of local sleeper hits, both of which achieved cult status and
became hits years after their first appearance on the big screen. Although these films
did well in their respective first weeks in theaters, their popularity remains to this day. All
of these became hits after they left theaters with the help of word of mouth and social
media rounds. People who organically share their comments (both positive and
negative) about movies with friends result in more people patronizing the movies out of
curiosity. With the advent of social media, people are now becoming more prone to
have more influence over why they should watch a particular movie. In the cases of
"One Another Chance" and "Four Sisters and a Wedding," the use of social media
memes and movie references got people to watch them.

shop, the husband saw a red rooster (manok na pula) that he assumed looked so good it
might win. So the husband staked everything on that red rooster, believing that this was
his opportunity to double his money.

But the powerful and courageous-looking rooster eventually lost the fight and the
husband lost all of his money. So he told the story while singing "Manok na Pula."
