Architecture and construction Engineering program (S.S.P)

Spring Semester 2021/2022

Tender - 1

Dr. Amira Abo-Elnasr

Lecturer, Faculty of Engineering,
Architecture department
Insulation

 Globally, about half the energy used in the life of a building is for
heating and cooling, so effective insulation is a major priority.
 Many buildings require waterproofing. Waterproofing is especially for
bathrooms, kitchens, water tanks, swimming pools, roofs of houses
and every place where water is available for long period
 SCOPE
 These specifications cover, waterproofing, roofing and thermal
insulation, to be used for underground structures floors and roof
decks required for the Works in accordance with the Drawings, Bills
of Quantities and as directed in writing by the Engineer.
Insulation

Damp proofing
 All substructures, floors of ground floor, roof, kitchens and bathrooms
should be painted with a liquid waterproofing.
 Water proofing
 An application of a bituminous waterproofing consisting of polyester
reinforcement incorporated in thermofusible elastomeric bitumen.
Workmanship
 Prior to the beginning of the roofing works, the Engineer and the roofing
superintendent shall proceed to the inspection and approval of the receiving
surfaces, the upstands at roof edges, the drains, vent pipes and other venting
devices, the construction joints etc.
 The general contractor will be notified in written of all defects of the flat surfaces or
details and work shall not proceed until such defects have been corrected.
 One coat of primer is painted over all the surface.
 Installation of the bituminous layers shall be carried out in conformity with the
manufacturer’s specifications and using propane torch welding only.
 Asphalt coatings shall be softened but not melted as to avoid superheating using a
single-nozzle torch of adequate size.
 Rolls shall overlap 75mm on sides and 150mm at ends.
 All inadequately welded seams will be refused.
 All superheated areas or parts will be refused and will require adequate repair in
accordance with the degree of deterioration of the membrane.
 Air blisters, wrinkles impact and tearing marks and protective granules pounding marks
are not admissible.
 Should these defects occur roofing works shall be carried out again.
Bitumen rolls
 is extracted from oil residues of solid black or brown used in covering the
surfaces of installations.
 It can be welded at high temperature to become liquid to isolate all the winding
surfaces.
 It can resist moisture and protect against fungi and insects.
Bitumen Paint
 General purpose bitumen paint is ideal for use in areas
where an effective waterproof, weatherproof, chemical and
corrosion resistant protective coating is needed. Bituminous
coating can be used both externally and internally.

It is resistant to low concentrations of alkalis and acids and

can withstand prolonged oxidation. Suitable for application
to a wide variety of materials including iron and steel, lead,
zinc, aluminum, cement, concrete, stone, wood and brick
and is mainly used for, metal protection, corrugated iron
sheets, fire escapes, stairways, ladders, storage tanks,
gutters, down pipes, fences, railings, gates etc. Also, as a
protective coating for concrete structures, stone, brick,
concrete screeds and sand/cement surfaces. In addition,
since Bitumen Paint forms an odorless and taint-free film it
can even be used on non-potable water tanks.
Blanket Batts and Rolls

 Blanket batts and rolls are typically

constructed with fiberglass, although
versions made of cotton, mineral
wool, and plastic fibers are also
available. Installing this type of
insulation is an inexpensive and DIY-
friendly project, since the materials
are designed to fit into the standard
width between wall studs, attic rafters,
and floor joists
 Best for: Do-it-yourself insulation of
unfinished walls, floors, and ceilings
Spray Foam Insulation

 Best for: Adding insulation to existing

finished areas, as well as irregularly
shaped or hard-to-reach spaces

 Spray foam insulation seals leaks and

gaps inside existing walls. Liquid
polyurethane is sprayed into the cavity of
the wall, where it then expands and
hardens into a solid foam
Specifications of insulation
 Surface Preparation
 As with all surface coatings, preparation of the surface is of the upmost importance, it will
influence the degree of adhesion required and the life of the coating.
 All surfaces should be clean, dry and free from grease, rust, mill scale, etc.
 Metal surfaces should be wire brushed to remove rust or cleaned by mechanical means. Where
long term protection is required and initial treatment using a suitable anti-corrosive primer.

How to write specification code
 Per m2
 application of a bituminous waterproofing consisting of a polyester reinforcement (250 grm/m2
minimum) in- corporates in thermosfusible elastomeric bitumen,
 With the requirements of technical specifications, And
 the origins of the industry full of all.
