“Unleash the Lion in You”

“You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which

you really stop to look fear in the face.” – Eleanor Roosevelt

Imagine for a moment – your hands are trembling and your heart is barely
beating in your chest. You are just about to stand up and speak, but it seems like
you are running out of words and your mouth is as dry as dust. Perhaps, a little
voice in your head is saying that you are not able to make it.

It has been seven weeks since the day that I was deployed as an intern
at Holy Cross College Sta. Rosa, N.E., Inc. I already experienced teaching
various lessons, but those topics that have something to do with delivering a
speech were very close to my heart. February 13, 2024, I had an actual teaching
at Grade 10 – St. Ignatius about “The Features of Effective Speech Delivery”.
The night before the said discussion, I tried to think about how am I going to
motivate my learners to speak in front. I started the class by asking my learners if
they already experienced delivering a speech and how was their experience in
delivering that speech. All my learners said “yes”, but most of them said that they
were nervous, yet afraid to speak in front of many people. I told them that in the
good old days, I used to be one of the “mambabalagtas” in our school for three
consecutive years. I can vividly remember the first time that I stood in front of my
teachers and schoolmates. My hands were both shaking and my whole body was
as cold as ice. However, I was able to manage those things through proper
training. Therefore, I gave them some tips such as; standing straight and relaxed,
letting their face glow with enthusiasm, using gestures to release tensions, and
many more.

To sum it up, I know that there are some instances in our lives that we
often question the ability that we have. Thus, we often hide ourselves in our
comfort zone. This week's experiences of mine, I could say that I saw my old self
in the eyes of my learners. I used to be like them in the past, but as time went by,
it made me realize that delivering a speech was truly nerve-wracking, especially
that you are speaking in front of many people. But that is normal, just like what
Anikka Co said: “Even the best person in the world also gets nervous”. Delivering
an effective speech usually takes a lot of experience before one can render talks
or deliver speeches without feeling uncomfortable and conscious about a lot of
things. Nevertheless, let us face our fear, wear self-confidence, and unleash the
lion in us.
