INTRODUCTION

Do Filipino Catholic Christians have a good understanding of their faith? Do

they apply the teachings to their daily lives? And how important do they consider

their faith in Christianity?

This study will explore the significance of attending Sunday liturgies and

Special Day liturgies in the church as well as historical and cultural significance of

Roman Catholicism among Filipinos. These factors include the role of personal

faith and spirituality, the impact of family and community traditions, the influence of

church activities and liturgies that are unique to these solemnities, and the effects

of social media and technology in fostering a sense of community and belonging

among the faithful.

After conducting a study on the “Factors influencing Attendance during

Semana Santa”, it can be said that church attendance is indeed high during Semana

Santa, the studies show that more Catholics attend these special days over the

usual Sunday masses. Additionally, this increase in attendance is not merely a

matter of tradition or obligation but is deeply rooted in the cultural, social, and

spiritual lives of the faithful. Through this research, several key factors have been

identified as influential in driving high attendance during Semana Santa (Holy Week)

Christian communal worship. Exceptions are allowed for serious reasons, balancing

individual circumstances with the communal and spiritual significance of Mass

attendance. Thus, the legal basis for Sunday Mass attendance blends doctrinal
DR. MARIA D. PASTRANA NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
CCC 2181 emphasizes the Sunday Eucharist as the foundation of Christian

practice, requiring faithful Catholics to attend on days of obligation, unless excused

by serious reasons or their pastor. Failure to attend is considered a grave sin, rooted

in biblical and canonical law. The Eucharist plays a crucial role in Christian life,

connecting believers with Christ's sacrifice. Sunday Mass attendance balances

doctrinal importance with pastoral care, fostering a vibrant faith life. Exceptions are

allowed for serious reasons, ensuring Sunday Mass attendance is legal, as per

Republic Act No. 3022 SEC. 29.

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

According to Canon Law 1247, “On Sundays and other holy days of

obligation, the faithful are obliged to participate in the Mass. Moreover, they are to

abstain from those works which hinder the worship to be rendered to God, the joy

proper to the Lord’s day, or the suitable relaxation of mind and body.” This

mandates that Catholics must attend Mass every Sunday, as it is a duty incumbent

upon them. This obligation extends to participating in the Mass on designated holy

days as well. Furthermore, Catholics are expected to refrain from engaging in

activities that would detract from the worship owed to God, diminish the celebration

inherent to the Lord's day, or impede the appropriate rest of both mind and body.

In many Christian churches Palm Sunday is celebrated with a blessing and

procession of palms. Maundy Thursday marks Jesus’ institution at the Last Supper

of the Eucharist, thereafter a central element of Christian worship. In Roman

Catholicism, Maundy Thursday is accompanied by the priest’s washing of the feet of

DR. MARIA D. PASTRANA NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
12 humble or poor persons, in imitation of Jesus’ washing of the feet of his 12

disciples at the Last Supper. Good Friday commemorates Jesus’ suffering and

death on the cross; it is traditionally a day of sorrow, penance, and fasting. Holy

Saturday, also called Easter Vigil, is the traditional end of Lent where a mass is said

in the evening and unlike usual masses, this mass has 9 readings compared to the

regular 4 or 3 readings, the church lights are off until the Gloria is sung or said

accompanied with the sounding of church bells to signify that Christ has risen.

Easter Sunday is the celebration of Jesus’ Resurrection, according to the Gospels,

on the third day after his crucifixion.

Researchers aim to understand Semana Santa's peak attendance and the

reasons behind it, documenting the beliefs and faith of average Catholic Christians

in the Philippines, benefiting fields like Sociology, Anthropology, Religious Studies,

and Psychology.

Palm Sunday in Mauban, a coconut-producing town, begins early with the

annual pabasa, a ritual that begins with a candle lighting and prayer in front of the

family's processional images of the Nazareno and San Juan Evangelista. Old ladies,

some in their 80s, sing the haunting Pasyon melody, and by six in the morning, the

church patio is filled with people carrying palaspas. The tradition, revived by parish

priest Monsignor Tony Viray, involves women taking off their inuwak and creating a

continuous road of black veils.

The Linggo de Ramos mass begins, and the church's activity begins with the

internalization of the Siete Palabras. The procession is quieter and more solemn,
DR. MARIA D. PASTRANA NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
with hundreds of people following their chosen santo. The procession is a testament

to the town's cultural heritage and the importance of community.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

As stated by (Jayeel S. Cornelio 2014) “Pastoral concerns drove the

publication of the groundbreaking works on ordinary religion in the Philippines in the

1960s.” On the other hand, popular religion has gained popularity during the 1990s

as a true representation of what it means to be a Catholic. The need for religion's

local significance has been more of a driving force behind this shift in social science

and religious studies research than the subject of secularization. This essay

investigates the circumstances that gave rise to the shift towards authenticity in

Philippine studies, including the country's socioeconomic settings, the social

sciences' growth, the public's shifting perceptions of religious organizations, and the

rise of regional theological perspectives.

Internationally reviewed Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic

Viewpoints is a publication that publishes academic works and other resources

about the history of the Philippines and its people, both domestically and

internationally. It holds that both historians and academics from other fields may

shed light on the past, but it also favors anthropological approaches to contemporary

history. It accepts theoretically informed but unburdened by technical works. It

encourages a global and comparative sensibility and aims to involve academics who
DR. MARIA D. PASTRANA NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
might not be experts on the Philippines. The Ateneo de Manila University publishes

the quarterly publication, which was first founded in 1953 as Philippine Studies.

This study explores the individual's experience of interreligious learning and

teaching, using hermeneutic phenomenology to interpret life experiences. It provides

insights into lived relation, space, body, time, and materiality. The study highlights

the need to foster tolerance and sensitivity to different life perspectives, addressing

the tragedy of excessive religious intolerance. It can help identify beneficial

interreligious learning experiences and present challenges for educational

environments.

As stated by (Krystin Zigan 2021) “The largest Christian denomination and

one of the oldest organizations in the world is the Roman Catholic Church.”

its strong hierarchical structure extends from a network of provincial and diocese-

level bishops to local parish priests, who wield significant institutional power (O'Coll

ins, 2010).

But the Catholic Church has also long supported the idea of delegating

operational Decision making to the local level. In recent years, however, this idea

has gained momentum due to broader societal trends that encourage a greater

participation of lay members, including women (Lamb, 2019; World Economic

Forum, 2013). Because of this disparity, the Catholic Church provides an intriguing

framework for examining how individual values influence how people in positions of

formal authority (priests) and ordinary members (parishions) perceive institutional

principles. Including laypeople in the process of making decisions could result in

DR. MARIA D. PASTRANA NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
power struggles and leadership conflicts since it could be seen by more

conservative clergy as an institutional contradiction (Creed et al., 2010).

Locally, a bishop grants pastoral authority to priests so they can take care of

flock members. Pastoral care is generally seen by many to be the act of exhibiting

empathy and compassion with the goal of assisting individuals (Poling, 1984).

Nonetheless, the Catholic Church has evolved throughout the ages to have a unique

perspective on pastoral care, employing the shepherd's crook as a metaphor for

both compassionate support and authority and discipline (Foucault, 1994).
