Fetal Growth Cycle in Utero

1. First trimester
a. Weeks 1-4: Fertilization occurs when the sperm fertilizes the egg. The fertilized egg
(zygote) then divides and travels down the fallopian tube to the uterus. The zygote
attaches to the lining of the uterus (endometrium) and begins to develop into an embryo
b. Week 5-8: The embryo begins to develop organs and structures. The brain, spinal cord,
heart, eyes, ears and limbs all begin to form.
c. Weeks 9-12: The embryo is now called a fetus. The fetus grows rapidly and its features
begin to show. The nose, mouth and ears begin to form. Fingers and toes
also begin to form.
2. Second trimester
a. Weeks 13-16: The fetus grows rapidly and its organs continue to develop. Bones begin to
harden and hair begins to grow on the head. The fetus also starts to move more.
b. Week 17-20: The fetus begins to develop a layer of fat. The skin also starts to thicken.
The fetus may start responding to sound and light.
c. Week 21-24: The fetus starts to gain weight. Its lungs also begin to develop. The fetus
may start to hiccup.

3. Third trimester
a. Weeks 25-28: The fetus gains weight and its lungs continue to develop. The fetus also
starts practicing breathing.
b. Week 29-32: The fetus begins to prepare for birth. Its position begins to change and its
head begins to descend into the pelvis.
c. Week 33-36: The fetus continues to gain weight and its lungs are almost mature. The
fetus may start to feel headaches.
d. Weeks 37-40: The fetus is ready for birth. It will descend into the pelvis and start
contracting. These contractions will become stronger and more frequent until the cervix
opens fully and the baby is born.
