Q1. Analyze the economic feasibility of solar and micro-hydel power systems from the given
data in figures 1 and 2 by answering the listed questions. All comparisons must be made in
percentages while giving all the selected values from the graphs. Also indicate the selected data
on the graphs. (10 marks)
1) Infer the economic feasibility of given systems by comparing the effect of variations in
full load hours on electricity generation costs in each system. (5)
2) Compare the effect of variations in operation costs on electricity generation costs for both
systems. (5)

kW Hydel Power Plant @ 5000 h/a
Solution:
By making variation in full load hours, we study the impact it made on electricity generation
cost in both the systems.
Photovoltaic System
30% increase in full load hours:
The electricity generation cost decreases from 0.41€/kWh to 0.32 €/kWh.
0.41 − 0.32
𝑃𝑒𝑟𝑐𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑎𝑔𝑒 𝑑𝑒𝑐𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑠𝑒 = ∗ 100 = 𝟐𝟏. 𝟗𝟓%(𝒅𝒆𝒄𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒔𝒆)
0.41
30% decrease in full load hours:
The electricity generation cost increases from 0.41€/kWh to 0.58 €/kWh.
0.58 − 0.41
𝑃𝑒𝑟𝑐𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑎𝑔𝑒 𝑖𝑛𝑐𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑠𝑒 = ∗ 100 = 𝟒𝟏. 𝟒𝟔%(𝒊𝒏𝒄𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒔𝒆)
0.41
0.073 − 0.057
𝑃𝑒𝑟𝑐𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑎𝑔𝑒 𝑑𝑒𝑐𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑠𝑒 = ∗ 100 = 𝟐𝟏. 𝟗𝟐%(𝒅𝒆𝒄𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒔𝒆)
0.073
30% decrease in full load hours:
The electricity generation cost increases from 0.073€/kWh to 0.105 €/kWh.
0.105 − 0.073
𝑃𝑒𝑟𝑐𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑎𝑔𝑒 𝑖𝑛𝑐𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑠𝑒 = ∗ 100 = 𝟒𝟑. 𝟖𝟒%(𝒊𝒏𝒄𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒔𝒆)

EEE488 Renewable and Alternate Energy Systems Assignment 04
Percentage difference between these two systems when we increase the load hour by
30%.
21.95 − 21.92 = 𝟎. 𝟎𝟑%
Percentage difference between these two systems when we decrease the load hour by
30%.
43.84 − 41.46 = 𝟐. 𝟑𝟖%
Conclusion:
30% increase in full load hours shows that the cost of electricity generation decreases more in
photovoltaic as compare to hydel system. Thus, photovoltaic system is 0.03% more
economically feasible than hydel system.
While by decreasing the full load hours by 30%, the result remains same that system 1 is more
reliable than 2 as increase in cost of electricity is 2.38% less in photovoltaic system then in
hydel system.
By making variation in operation cost, we study the impact it made on electricity generation
cost in both the systems.
Photovoltaic System
30% increase in operation cost:
The electricity generation cost increases from 0.41€/kWh to 0.425 €/kWh.
0.425 − 0.41
𝑃𝑒𝑟𝑐𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑎𝑔𝑒 𝑖𝑛𝑐𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑠𝑒 = ∗ 100 = 𝟑. 𝟔𝟔%(𝒊𝒏𝒄𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒔𝒆)
0.41
0.41 − 0.38
𝑃𝑒𝑟𝑐𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑎𝑔𝑒 𝑑𝑒𝑐𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑠𝑒 = ∗ 100 = 𝟕. 𝟑𝟐%(𝒅𝒆𝒄𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒔𝒆)
0.41
0.078 − 0.073
𝑃𝑒𝑟𝑐𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑎𝑔𝑒 𝑖𝑛𝑐𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑠𝑒 = ∗ 100 = 𝟔. 𝟖𝟓%(𝒊𝒏𝒄𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒔𝒆)
0.073
30% decrease in operation cost:
The electricity generation cost decreases from 0.073€/kWh to 0.069 €/kWh.
0.073 − 0.069
𝑃𝑒𝑟𝑐𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑎𝑔𝑒 𝑑𝑒𝑐𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑠𝑒 = ∗ 100 = 𝟓. 𝟒𝟖%(𝒅𝒆𝒄𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒔𝒆)
0.073
EEE488 Renewable and Alternate Energy Systems Assignment 04
Percentage difference between these two systems when we increase the operation cost by
30%.
6.85 − 3.66 = 𝟑. 𝟏𝟗%
Percentage difference between these two systems when we decrease the operation cost by
30%.
7.32 − 5.48 = 𝟏. 𝟖𝟒%
Conclusion:
30% increase in operation cost shows that the cost of electricity generation increases more in hydel as
compare to photovoltaic system. Thus, photovoltaic system is 3.19% more economically feasible than
hydel system.
While by decreasing the operation cost by 30%, the result remains same that system 1 is more reliable than
2 as decrease in cost of electricity is 1.84% more in photovoltaic system then in hydel system.
