Lesson Plan in Science 6

Second Quarter

I. OBJECTIVE : Classify each group of vertebrates S6MT-IIe-f-3

Appreciate the importance of animals by providing them with proper care

II. SUBJECT MATTER

Classifying each group of vertebrates
Materials: video clip, pictures, real objects
Integration: EsP - caring for animals; appreciate their importance and existence in the environment
specifically in food chain

III. PROCEDURES
A. Motivation
The teacher will ask: Do you have pets at home? How do you take care of them?
Then, she will show picture of an animal remains, and let the learners tell what animal they think
it is. (Question: Is this animal a type of pet? Why? Why not) Then, the teacher will tell a little bit
about its history and describe its physical features.
She will also discuss the importance of all animals in the environment.

B. Developmental Activities
1. PRESENTATION
The teacher will show a chart showing pictures of animal bones and another chart showing
animals’ outer physical appearance. She will call a few learners to paste the second set
pictures on the first chart where the bones are displayed. They will pair the two sets of
pictures according to their physical attributes.

The sets of illustrations are included in the classification of vertebrates such as mammals,
fish, birds, amphibians, and reptiles.

2. DISCUSSION
(Present a video and discuss further after it.)
Vertebrates are animals with backbones that give shape and support their body. Bones are
predominant feature in the body of vertebral animals that serve as protection of their
internal organs. The presence of bones in these animal’s body helps the animals to walk,
jump, crawl, and swim. Animals can oviparous and viviparous. Viviparous are animals that
are born alive by their parents such as dogs, carabaos, and cats, while oviparous animals are
those that are hatched from egg such as chicken, duck, and snake.

Vertebrates are group into the following:

1. Mammals
Mammals are warm-blooded animals that are born alive or viviparous. They have hair of
fur as their body covering and mammary gland to feed their young with their milk.

2. Fish
Fish are cold-blooded animals covered with scales. They have tails and fins that help
them swim. They are animals hatched from egg and breathe through their gills.
3. Birds
Birds are warm-blooded animals hatched from egg of oviparous. They have a pair of
limbs for hopping and a pair of wings used in flying. There are birds who have wings but
can’t fly. A beak or bill is used in getting food as well as for protecting themselves from
their enemies.

4. Amphibians
Amphibians are cold-blooded animals hatched from egg. They spend part of their lives in
water and part on land. They have moist and scaleless skin. Some examples are
salamander, newt, toad, and caecilian.

5. Reptiles
Reptiles are cold-blooded vertebrates hatched from egg. They have dry scaly skin and
some have shells. Some examples are turtles, chameleon, snake, lizard, and gecko.
3. ENRICHMENT
Group the class into 6. Each group will have a chart with five columns which are divided into
different types of vertebrates. The groups will classify the pictures of vertebrates into their
proper column by pasting them.

When the group of learners has done its task, they will shout “Vertebrates!” The first group
to finish the task will receive a reward.
