Popular music literally means “music of the populace,” comparable to

traditional folk music. It was then called pop music as it became a popular source of
entertainment for a large number of people, be it in radio or live performances.
Pop music covers a wide range of songs from folk, country and Western, to the
ballads, standards and rock ’n roll.
Popular music has a diverse or wide range of forms or genres. Popular music started
as a body of musical genres from the African-American music. Most of these musical
genres are offshoot of the earliest musical styles as a result of human living in the
countryside, cultural orientation and pride, political issues, historical accounts of
experiences by concerned authors/writers, or simply the desire for providing
amusement/entertainment.
Popular music has quickly earned appreciation from people of all cultures, not
just by the Americans, because of its clarity of message, and the relatively liberal
manner of presentation to the listening crowd. Although it has only sprouted in the
20th century, its impact to the people is enormous, that it has driven much crowd
and has taken many new and varied forms.
Pop music reflects the message of the simple countryman or cowboy who
recounts his cultural roots, natural home, political situation, story of nostalgia, or
simply amusement.
Pop music basically follows a verse-chorus pattern, contains repetitive note
patterns, has an average tempo, emphasizes on voice of the singer, and is freer in
style.
Popular music has a wide range of musical genres that include folk, country,
classic (crossover), ballad, rock ‘n roll, disco, and alternative music.
Popular music has become attractive to the common people because of its simplicity,
familiarity, friendliness, and clarity of message.

Popular Music Genres:

1. Folk Music – songs of common people handed down through generations
2. Country/Western Music – songs of cultural roots and natural settings Ballads –
narrative folk songs dealing with love
Standards – most popular song from a particular genre or style

2
3. Rock-And-Roll – pop song combining Afro-American forms like blues and jazz
4. Disco – rock music that was more danceable
5. Crossover Music – classical music made popular in performances

Popular Music: Characteristics:

• Verse-Chorus Scheme
• Repetitive Patterns of Notes
• Average Tempo
• Emphasis on Voice. The singer’s voice is given prominence in a pop song,
as well as the clear message he/she conveys.
• Freer in Style. Pop songs widely vary in style depending on the demand of
the recording team, company or public.

Art analysis tips

‘I like this’ or ‘I don’t like this’ without any further explanation or

justification is not analysis. Personal opinions must be supported
with explanation, evidence or justification.
‘Analysis of artwork’ does not mean ‘description of artwork’. To gain
high marks, students must move beyond stating the obvious and
add perceptive, personal insight. Students should demonstrate
higher order thinking – the ability to analyze, evaluate and
synthesize information and ideas. For example, if color has been
used to create strong contrasts in certain areas of an artwork,
students might follow this observation with a thoughtful
assumption about why this is the case – perhaps a deliberate

6
attempt by the artist to draw attention to a focal point, helping to
convey thematic ideas.
Cover a range of different visual elements and design principles. It is
common for students to become experts at writing about one or two
elements of composition, while neglecting everything else – for
example, only focusing upon the use of color in every artwork studied.
This results in a narrow, repetitive and incomplete analysis of the
artwork. Students should ensure that they cover a wide range of art
elements and design principles, as well as address context and
meaning, where required. The questions below are designed to ensure
that students cover a broad range of relevant topics within their
analysis.
Write alongside the artwork discussed. In almost all cases, written
analysis should be presented alongside the work discussed, so that it
is clear which artwork comments refer to. This makes it easier for
examiners to follow and evaluate the writing.
Support writing with visual analysis. It is almost always helpful for
high school students to support written material with sketches,
drawings and diagrams that help the student understand and analyze
the piece of art. This might include composition sketches; diagrams
showing the primary structure of an artwork; detailed enlargements of
small sections; experiments imitating use of media or technique; or
illustrations overlaid with arrows showing leading lines and so on.
Visual investigation of this sort plays an important role in many artist
studies.
Does the artwork communicate an action, narrative or story (i.e.
historical event or illustrate a scene from a story)? Has the
arrangement been embellished, set up or contrived?
Does the artwork explore movement? Do you gain a sense that parts
of the artwork are about to change, topple or fall (i.e. tension;
suspense)? Does the artwork capture objects in motion (i.e. multiple or
sequential images; blurred edges; scene frozen mid-action; live
performance art; video art; kinetic art)?
What kind of abstract elements are shown (i.e. bars; shapes;
splashes; lines)? Have these been derived from or inspired by realistic
forms? Are they the result of spontaneous, accidental creation or
careful, deliberate arrangement?
Does the work include the appropriation of work by other artists,
such as within a parody or pop art? What effect does this have (i.e.
copyright concerns)?
Does the subject captivate an instinctual response, such as items that
are informative, shocking or threatening for humans (i.e. dangerous
places; abnormally positioned items; human faces; the gaze of people;
motion; text)? Heap map tracking has demonstrated that these elements
catch our attention, regardless of where they are positioned.

7
What kind of text has been used (i.e. font size; font weight; font
family; stenciled; hand-drawn; computer-generated; printed)? What
has influence
Do key objects or images have symbolic value or provide a cue to
meaning? How does the artwork convey deeper, conceptual themes
(i.e. allegory; iconographic elements; signs; metaphor; irony)?

Activity I: Write T if you think the statement is TRUE and F if it is

FALSE.
1. The artwork must be in compliance with the entry
guidelines.
2. The artwork must be compatible with one of the identified
categories. (Technology-based Art)
3. The artwork should be compelling, aesthetic in design,
and carry a message.
4. Fellow competitors reserve the right to reject or move
an
entry to another category as it deems appropriate,
according to media used.
5. Artwork will be judged using the following criteria:
uniqueness/ originality, professional quality
(neatness and craft), aesthetic quality (design,
composition, color/tones), concept, selection and
application of
materials, and complexity/level of digital technology
used.

Benefits of being active

During the COVID-19 pandemic, when so many of us are very

restricted in our movements, it is even more important for people of all
ages and abilities to be as active as possible. Even a short break from
sitting, by doing 3-5 minutes of physical movement, such as walking or
stretching, will help ease muscle strain, relieve mental tension and
improve blood circulation and muscle activity. Regular physical activity
can also help to give the day a routine and be a way of staying in contact
with family and friends.

Benefits of Adults

We all know that leading an active lifestyle is good for us. If you
participate in regular moderate physical activity, you can expect to
enjoy numerous health and social benefits, including:

reduced risk of heart disease and stroke

reduced risk of developing high blood pressure
reduced blood pressure in people who already have high blood
pressure
prevention of some cancers
reduced risk of becoming overweight

12
reduced risk of developing diabetes and prevention and
treatment of non-
insulin dependent diabetes - it has been estimated that
30 to 50 percent of
new cases of type 2 diabetes could be prevented by
appropriate physical levels of activity
better bone and muscle development and prevention of
osteoporosis
improved muscle flexibility, strength and endurance
reduced risk of dying prematurely
reduced risk of falling, and improved mobility and strength for
older adults
improved quality of sleep.

Physical activity can also help:

encourage social interaction
improve concentration and learning
increase personal confidence and self-awareness
reduce feelings of depression and anxiety
enhance self-esteem
improve quality of life.
Benefits for children and young people
The problem is that overweight children are more likely to turn
into overweight adults who are often inactive and face a huge range of
health problems. Being active not only keeps children and young people
fit and healthy, but provides all kinds of social, emotional and
intellectual benefits.
Research shows that children doing regular physical activity can have:
improved emotional well-being - helps young children feel
more confident, happy and relaxed, with improved self-
esteem and self-concept
improved health - encourages healthy growth and
development of children's bodies, and similar benefits of
physically active adults
improved mental health - improves concentration
skills and ability to manage anxiety and stress
enhanced social skills - develops skills such as

In our country we are facing a great health issue that slows the
movement of everything. We all know that in is not only here in our country
but also around the around the world.
COVID 19 is a great challenge and issue that we are fighting right now.
It is very hard to fight for something that we can’t see. Truly our condition
right now is so hard that we need to adapt for the so called “new normal”.
Everybody is affected.
There are different health existing health laws related to health trends,
issues, and concerns that you have already encountered in the first module
for the second quarter.
Before you learn the different health trends, issues, and concerns in
the national level you need let us familiarize the different health trends, issues
and concerns.

Health Trends, Issues, and Concerns

In the previous module, you have learned the different health laws
related to consumer health. The Consumer Act of the Philippines (RA 7394)
that protect the interest of the consumer, promote his/her general welfare,
establish standards of conduct for business and industry. TAMA or
Traditional and Alternative Medicine Act of 1997 (RA 8423)

REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH
Another pressing health issue that concerns you as an adolescent is
reproductive health. “Reproductive health is defined as a state of physical,
mental, and social well-being in all matters relating to the reproductive
system, at all stages of life” (Galvez Tan, et al.,2009). With the sudden physical
and emotional changes in your body, more and more questions are starting
to surface. Reproductive health is crucial for its paves the way for social and
economic development. Furthermore, it has also a great influence in the
health of the next generation. The health of newborn children will be
dependent on the health of the parents, particularly the mother.

To aid the reproductive health needs of the citizens, the government

mandated the RA 10354 or the Responsible Parenthood and Reproductive
Health Act. Here are the four pillars of foundation:
1. Informed choice
2. Respect for life
3. Birth control
4. Responsible parenthood

18
Reproductive health also concerns problems such as sexually-
transmitted infections. According to Dr. Natividad (2013), in the Young Adult
Fertility and Sexuality Study of 2013(YAFS-4), a survey of Filipino college high
school graduate

-36. 2% and 43.5% respectively admitted to having engaged in premarital sex.

-66.7% and 79.6% did not use any protection at first premarital sex.

What is premarital sex?

“Premarital sex” means sexual intercourse before marriage, whether

marriage with that sexual partner or anyone else. These scenarios are most
often the cause of infections.
What is AIDS? What is HIV?
A-cquired H-uman
I-mmuno I-mmunodefiency
D-eficiency V-irus
S-yndrome

HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) is a virus that attacks cells that

help the body fight infection, making a person more vulnerable to other
infections and diseases. It is spread by contact with certain bodily fluids of a
person with HIV, most commonly during unprotected sex (sex without a
condom or HIV medicine to prevent or treat HIV), or through sharing injection
drug equipment. AIDS is the late stage of HIV infection that occurs when the
body’s immune system is badly damaged because of the virus.

In this light, the government also puts its effort to eradicate these sex-
related diseases, most especially AIDS. To prevent and control this the
Philippine AIDS Prevention and Control Act or RA 8504 was created.

SUBSTANCE USE AND ABUSE (Teen Drug Abuse and Addiction)

19
SOCIAL HEALTH

Peer influence also concerns you as adolescents. You are in

the developmental stage wherein you build lasting relationships
with peers. Here are some issues that you may encounter:

A. Cybercrime

With the advancement of technology, there are various

problems where you may express yourself. This diversity may do
both good and harm to you. Cybercrime is defined as a crime
where a computer is the object of the crime or is used as a tool
to commit an offense. To protect the citizens from this concern,
the government mandated RA 10175 or the Cybercrime
prevention Act of 2012.

B. Child Pornography

In relation to cybercrime, child pornography has become a

pressing concern to generation. “Child pornography” refers to any
representation, whether visual, audio, or written combination
thereof, by electronic, mechanical, digital, optical, magnetic, or
any other means, of child engaged or involved in real or simulated
explicit sexual activities” (Official Gazette, 2009)
“Child” refers to a person below 18 years of age or over, but
is unable to fully take care of himself/herself from abuse, neglect,
cruelty, exploitation or discrimination because of a physical or
mental disability or condition.

C. Hazing

Fraternities and sororities, gangs, and social groups are

starting to become more and more identified and publicized.
Because of their “alleged” prestige and prime, more teens are
encouraged to be a part of them. For some of these groups, hazing
may be an option to test an “applicants” willingness and
commitment. On the other hand, hazing is very dangerous, and
proven to have killed many lives. RA 8949 was created to protect
the youth.

20
D. Blood Donation
Being protective citizens of the country, you must willingly help
other in ways that will not harm you.

SAFETY IN THE EVIRONMENT

Pollution and road safety are two of the most usual
issues that concern you as a member of your community.

Pollution
With the exponential growth in population, more resources are
being demanded and supplied to the people. However, people do not
manage these resources properly. Thus, pollution arises. That is why
the government mandated RA 9512 or the National Environmental
Awareness and Education.

Road Safety
Road accidents are one of the most frequent causes of death
among Filipinos. To respond to this alarming situation, citizens are
protected by law through the Republic Acts. Seat Belt Use Act this
policy includes the mandatory wearing of seatbelts by the driver and
front seat passengers or any running motor vehicle. The Act also
prohibits children in the front seat of any motor vehicle. Driving under
the influence of alcohol or illegal drug is not allowed.
