DAY 1-2

Packaging Materials for Milk and Dairy Products

Paper and paper based products- The paper and paper based products form an excellent packaging
material for milk and milk products. They may be kraft paper, grease proof paper, vegetable parchment paper,
glassine paper, wax coated paper, plastic coated paper, paper boards, solid fibre boards, liner boards, box
boards etc. The papers are used in the form of boxes, bags, wrappers, cartons, cups etc. The advantage of
using paper is that it is weightless, capability for printing on the surface, low cost and easy disposability. The
disadvantages include low wet and tear strength.

Glass- The glass may be transparent or opaque. Glass is used in the form of bottles, tumblers, jars, jugs etc.
The advantages cited for glass as a packaging material include its strength, rigidity, ability to have a barrier for
water and gas and inertness to chemical substances. The disadvantage is its heavy weight, and fragility.

Tin plate- It may be made up of a thin sheet (0.025 mm thick) of mild steel coated on both sides with a layer of
pure tin. It is desirable to have an internally lacquered can, which provides better resistance to corrosion. The
advantages cited for tin containers as a packaging material are their good strength and excellent barrier
properties. The disadvantages are their high cost, heavy weight, difficulty in closing the lid of the container, and
disposal. The containers are mostly used in the form of can.

Aluminium foil- The common thickness of the foil used is 0.012 - 0.015 mm. To increase corrosion resistance,
it may be lacquered (coated with lacquer) or a thin film of plastic can be applied for packing dairy products. The
advantages of these containers are good barrier properties, grease proof, non-absorption, shrink proof,
odorless, tasteless, hygienic, non-toxic, opaque to light, bright in appearance etc. The demerits are its low tear
strength, susceptibility to strong acids and alkalis. It is mostly used in the form of wrapper, carton and box.

Timber- The required qualities for the timber to act as a packaging material are it should be free from odour,
have an attractive appearance, and required mechanical strength. It may be treated with casein formalin, or
sprayed with paraffin wax or plastics or to make it more water resistant and to avoid the passage of timber taint
to butter. It is generally used in the form of a box, tub, cask or barrel.

Plastics- The use of plastics in packaging has made tremendous progress in recent years all over the world. A
wide variety of plastics can be used as thermoformed, injection moulded or blow moulded containers, such as
bottles, cartons, cups, boxes etc. The merits of rigid plastic containers are its low cost and ease of fabrication.
The demerits cited are lack of product compatibility, low barrier properties, plastic deterioration, lack of
resistance to high heat and fragility at lower temperatures. Flexible plastic packaging films are used as
wrappers or sachets or bags or pouches for packaging milk and dairy products. The flexible plastics can be
classified in to two types.

Low polymers- They include cellophane (coated with plain or nitrocellulose / saran / polyethylene), treated
with cellulose etc.

High polymers- Polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene, poly vinyl chloride, poly vinyledene chloride
(cryovac), rubber hydrochloride (pliofilm), polyester, polyamide (nylon), saran (a mixed polymer), etc. form
good packaging materials.

patterns and other parts like seams, fasteners and the number of pieces are also
included. This will serve as guide to pattern-making.
Bill of materials. A listing of all the materials and supplies needed for the project. It
includes the estimate amount and product specifications such as the color, thickness or
size. This may also include other expected expenses such as transportation, fuel, water
and labor. For fuel, such as propane gas, the estimate cost must be based on the
length of time the tank was used. For labor cost, the current minimum daily wage or the
prevailing rate of the worker (whichever is higher) is a good basis to use. The bill of
materials and other expenses becomes the basis for computing the production cost and
eventually, the price of a handicraft product.
Tools & equipment. A listing of the tools and equipment needed for the project. For
school-based projects, if the tools are to be borrowed from the machine shop, the
school policy for borrowing and using tools and equipment must be observed. This part
of the plan will help ensure that the tools are available, prepared, or repaired.
Work procedure. This is the detailed description of the production techniques and is
outlined in proper sequence. Work specifications are also included like the type of stitch
to be sewn or if a handle will be riveted or glued. If you are not sure about certain steps,
this part can be analysed with the teacher to minimize mistakes. The goal for this part
is to ensure a good work flow. Indicate an estimate of time in finishing each part.
Safety measures or precautions. This is a list of safety reminders based on the
potential hazards due to the nature of the handicraft project, the work sequence and the
tools to be used. This part instills the safety consciousness in the worker.

IMPORTANCE OF A PROJECT PLAN

The foundation of any work is a good plan. A good plan is a management tool that can save
countless hours and (hard-earned amount of money) in revising, restructuring, and other ineffective
actions (Goldsmith, 2005). In handicraft, a plan is particularly helpful since the materials may be
expensive and are used up in the process. A revision of a project due to a lack of plan is indeed costly.
Aside from the time and financial considerations, a project plan helps you implement the appropriate design
and choose the materials and techniques you need. Thus, it facilitates a systematic and orderly
work system as well as independence with minimal supervision from the teacher. It can also help in
anticipating problems and minimizing hazards. For the teacher’s part, it is a monitoring tool to easily follow a
student’s progress or trace a problem.

The general goals of planning are to:

1.Economize on materials, efforts, and techniques;

2. Produce highly acceptable products; and

3. Establish comfort and efficiency in work.

The Project Plan or Work Plan Sheet

The following are the contents of a project plan:

Perspective/Pictorial view. It is a perspective drawing showing the different sides (front, back, top or
bottom) of the project with corresponding shapes, structural and decorative designs and dimensions – hence
a product specification. Brief specific descriptions may be included if details could not be presented in the
drawing; such a show a product is opened or operated. This part helps the craftsman envision the final output
of the product.

Work drawing. This is another drawing indicating the dimensions and shapes of individual pieces of a project
and how each piece is related to each other. Details patterns and other parts like seams, fasteners and
the number of pieces are also included. This will serve as guide to pattern-making.

Select at least 5 different stitches.

Step 3: Trim paper to size.

1. Trim your paper

Step 4: With the 12 inch side on the top (the long

side) score lines at 0.5 inches, 2 inches, 5 inches, 7
inches, 10 inches and 11.5 inches.

Step 5: Rotate your paper 90 degrees so the 9 inch

side is now at the top and score at the 2 inch and 7
inch mark.

Step 6: Fold along your score lines and use a bone

folder to burnish the creases. This will help make sure
all your folds are clean and sharp.

Step 7: Cut along the 5 and 7 inch marks up to the 2

inch score line. It's marked in blue in the bottom right
square above. This will make 2 square flaps.

Step 8: Apply double-sided tape or paper glue to the

2 square flaps you've just made and to the 2 rectangle
pieces to the right of both square up to the 0.5 inch
score line (see square in top left).

Step 9: The 9 inch side of your paper will form the top
of your box and the 12 inch side will form the sides.
Lay your paper flat. Lift one of the square flaps and
stick it to the back of the rectangle piece that has the
tape or glue on. Lift the flap with no tape and stick this
to the glued flap. Do the same to the other side.

Step 10: Take your box and squeeze the top together.
The box should naturally fold in and stop at the score
lines to form to triangles on each side of your box.

Step 11: Use some mini clothes pins or tie with

bakers twine to keep the top of your rectangular milk
carton boxes closed and fill with treats.

Step 12: Paste your embroidered dairy packaging

design in front.

Tips in Making the Performance Task

1. Have a can-do attitude. Learning new things can be frustrating, so be careful of your self-talk when
you’re trying new techniques. Tell yourself you can do it, and you will do it.
2. Practice makes perfect. If you’re just learning to embroidered, practice every day for atleast a half-
hour. It doesn’t matter if you make mistake. Just keep going!

Note: The performance task is collaboration between Math 8 and T.L.E. 8. It will
be submitted on November 04, 2022 to Sir Raven D. Dalisay. Do the activity
effectively and efficiently.
