What I Need to Know

Welcome to this module on Finding the Area of a given figure

using square-tile units.
This module is designed to equip you, learners, with essential
knowledge, skills, and attitude on finding area using square
units. This module is designed so you can pace yourself as you
use them to achieve the prescribed learning competencies. It
also aims to prepare you to be at the forefront of the fast-
growing world of industry, quest for higher education and
useful in your daily living.

We hope this material will be of great help to you!

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the end of the module, you should be able to:
 Find the area of a given figure using square-tile units i.e.
number of square-tiles needed.
 Estimate the area of a given figure using any shape.

vii
What I Know
Find the area of each figure. Write it on the blank.

What’s In

Let us see how you can still remember our lesson

about how to measure the length and mass of objects.

A. Use the ruler to find the length of each object in

centimeters (cm). Write your answers on each blank. 1.

What’s New
Read the word problem.

Samson is planning to draw a picture from the book he is

reading. So, he has decided to draw a grid on a bond
paper to draw the picture easily.
The figure shows the grid he has made.

Can you tell how many square units there are? __________
There are ___ square units in the grid.
How did you get the number of square units?
__________________________________________________

From the story that we read, we can tell how many square tiles
there are by counting each square in the figure. Getting the
number of square units in any flat surface is getting the area of
that figure.
We are going to discover how to find the area of a given figure
using square-tile units and estimate the area of a given figure
using any shapes as we go along with the module.

What is It

x
Lesson 1: Finding the Area of a Given Figure using
Square-Tile Units

To fully understand our lesson about finding the area of a given

figure using square-tile units, we have to think this way:
Each square is a square unit. We use square units to
measure
the area or the surface enclosed in a figure. Area is the number
of square units occupied by any flat surface. To get the area of
a figure simply add the square units or count the square units in
the figure.

Look at the grid that Samson drew. Let us count the number of
the square units it has to get the area of the figure
A.
This figure has 32
square units.
Area = 32 square units

Let us study this figure. Count the number of the square units it
has. Get the area of the figure.

B.
This figure has 10 square units and
1 square unit ( ); a
combination
of triangles makes a square.
Area = 10 + 1
= 11 square units.

xi
Lesson 2: Estimating the area of a given figure using any
shapes

We can also get the Area by estimation. Most commonly

used shapes are for squares and rectangles. The trick is to
split the shape into several rectangles or squares. It doesn’t
matter how you split the shape. Then count the number of
squares or rectangles that fits the figure given, then that is the
estimated area.

Look at the small shape below. Using this, know the estimated
area of the figure given.

The estimated Area of the figure is 4 square units

To estimate Area of a figure-count the number of full squares.

A. Let’s study the examples below. Then, find the area of the
shaded part.

This figure has 20 shaded parts.

Therefore: Area = 20 square units

xii
B. Let’s study the figure below. Estimate how many small
rectangles can cover the figure, now give the area of the
figure.

Therefore: The Area of the figure is 6 small rectangle

What’s More

Activity 1

Count the number of square units in each figures. Write your

answer on the line.

1. ____ square units 2. ___ square units 3. __ square units

Estimate the area of a figure using a square unit.

xiii
4. 5.

Area=___ units Area = ___ units

Assessment 1

A. Write the area of each shaded figures on the blank

after the letter.

A. _____ sq. units

B. _____ sq. units
C. _____ sq. units

xiv
D. _____ sq. units
E. _____ sq. units

B. Using the small shape below as one unit, estimate the

Area
Of the following things.

xv
xvi
Bed Area = ___units
Cabinet Area =___ units
Table Area = ___ units
Floormat Area = ___ units
Toilet Area = ___ units

What I Have Learned

To understand the concept of finding the area

1. Area is the number of square units occupied by any flat

surface.
2. To get the area of a figure, just count the number of
square unit it has.
To understand the way of estimating area of a figure

To estimate Area of a figure-count the number of full

squares. The trick is to split the shape into several rectangles
or squares. It doesn’t matter how you split the shape. Then
count the number of squares or rectangles that fits the figure
given, then that is the estimated area.

What I Can Do
A. Use the illustration and shade the square units that is
asked for each rooms to show the required area.

xvii
1. Bedroom – 22 square units
2. Kitchen – 10 square units
3. Bathroom – 3 square units
4. TV Room – 8 square units
5. Dining room – 4 square units

Post-Assessment

A. Find the area of the school facilities stated in each

sentence. Use the provided figure below. Write your
answers on the given space.

xviii
1. There are _______ square units needed to cover the
principal’s office.

2. The school ground is covered by _______ squares.

3. The classroom is big; it has ______ squares needed to

cover it.

B. Find the area of the shaded parts.

4. ____ square units 5. ____ square units

6. ____ square units

7. ____ square units

xix
C. Estimate the area of the figure using this small square unit

8. 9.

Area= ____ square units Area= ____ square units

10.

Area= _____ square units

xx
Additional Activities

Draw lines inside the figure so that it will have an area of

16 square units.
