Let’s Elaborate
Introduction to Hip Hop Dance
Modernization has been an influential factor in the evolution of dances.
Due to urbanization, industrialization, and secularization, significant changes
were evident in today’s society wherein new benefits and values were
observed. Science and technology are continually developing, and new
standards were set in order to cope up in the society. In rural setting, dances
were performed as observance to the culture, celebration beliefs, worship, and
social expression.
As the time passes by, dancing has become a new way of competition,
as well as, entertaining people. Styles also became more complex, dynamic,
fast and kinesthetic which requires physical capabilities. Through technology,
new effects were added to dancing which enhances the appearance of a
performance, and also, new styles were easily introduced and exposed to
people who are growing in the modern age.

Definition of Hip Hop Dance

Hip-hop dance is a street dance styles primarily performed to
hip-hop music or that have evolved as part of hip-hop culture. It
includes a wide range of styles primarily breaking which was created in
the 1970s and was made popular by dance crews in the United States.

heart pumping. This high-impact cardio workout engages the entire
body and helps you build muscle tone. Hip hop requires you to
contract and expand the abdominal muscles in a series of quick but
fluid movements.

History of Hip Hop Dance

According to the African American vernacular English language since

5
1904, the word hip-hop was derived from the word “hep”, which means
“current”. It was apparently invented by a New York rapper Kevin Donovan,
(known as Africa Bambaataa), who was dubbed as the Grandfather of Hip-
hop. During the 1970’s in New York City among young Hispanic and African-
America communities, the dancing style of Hip-hop developed from the music
style that was first introduced and was made popular in the 1980’s by media’s
exposure with several hip-hop dance group in America. These group of young
people were locking for a creative outlet to escape their frustrations and
disappointments with the society. It started with funky beats reverberating at
house or basement parties and the streets of New York. This dance then
evolved as a street dance which became a cultural dance variation in the
United States and is generally a form of entertainment where technical and
teachable dance aspects replaced the cultural symbolism and message of the
true essence of African-American hip-hop dance. In 1980’s the street dance
arrived in the Philippines from the United States but only gained unparalleled
popularity during the 1990’s. There are various street dance battles held
locally across the country as well as the hip-hop dance competitions
internationally. The first Philippine Team who won the World Hip-Hop Dance
Championships is the Philippine All Stars. One of the pioneers of street dance
in the Philippines is Jungee Marcelo. After almost 11 years of living in a
community dominated by African-Americans in Los Angeles, Marcelo arrived
in the Philippines from U.S in 1990’s. He shared his knowledge of urban
dance and started the first formal street dance class in the country.
