Title

Does it take longer to run 50m on the curve part of a track than it takes to run the
same distance straight?
4

Objectives:
1. The time it takes to run 50m on a straight track
2. The time it takes to run 50m on a curve track
3. To compare the recorded time to prove whether the hypothesis was true or
false.
Plans as to how the experiment will be carried out:
1. On a field, both a straight track will be sectioned out and a 50m mark
will be identified from the starting point on each track respectively.

2. After identifying the 50m on the tracks, with the assistance of a friend, I
will be running 50m on the straight track and record the time it takes to do
so.
3. Afterwards I will run the same 50m on a curved track and will also record
the time it takes.
4. To compare the recorded time to prove whether the hypothesis was true or
false.

4. I will repeat the following steps 2&3 for accuracy.
5

Introduction
Many people believe that it will take a longer time to run 50m on a curved track
than it will to run 50m on the straight track. There is not much information
available at hand to find out whether or not there will be a time difference.
Therefore, the researcher decided to investigate for themselves. The Researcher
performed a test run on both curved and straight track and recorded the time taken
for each run. The researcher then analyzed the data in order to come to their
conclusion as to whether or not it takes longer to run 50m on a curve than on a
straight track.
6

Method of Data Collection

1. In order to carry out the investigation, the researcher used a tape measure, a
timer and markers.
2. The tape measure was used to measure the field six times before running and
markers were also used for marking an ending for every 50meter mark.
3. The timer was used to time the researcher's speed for each distance they ran.

Presentation of data

Curved Time

First lap 05.11

Second lap 03.95

Third lap 0.45

In the figure above the times that the researcher runs on the curved field is shown
in table form. The researcher ran three different times , on a curved field showing
three different times.
8

In figure 1 above ,A column graph is representing all the laps run on the curved
field. In the first lap, the researcher ran and the result was 05.11 seconds , the
second lap was 03.95 and the third lap was the lowest 0.45 assuming the researcher
was tired and exhausted .
9

Straight Time

First lap 05.81

Second lap 05.66

Third lap 06.21

In the diagram above it is being represented in table form three different times the
researcher ran on a straight field.
10

In the column graph above, the times run on the straight field are shown . Lap one
run by the researcher the time collected was 05. 81 , the second lap run was 05.66
and the third lap was 06.21. Analyzing that researcher ran the last lap swiftly.
11

Discussion of findings
While it was expected, it was clear the three participants showed the same
determination and speed on both curves and straight tracks. It was a close call by
how close each result was. But in the end, does it take longer to run 50m on the
curved part of the track than it takes to run the same distance on a straight track?
The answer is no, it took a turn by results showing that it takes a longer time to run
the straight 50m.
12

Conclusion
The introduction started with the assumption that it takes longer to run 50m on the
curved part of a track than on the straight. The researcher tested out this theory and
investigated. The data shows that that information is false , or can be proved false.
