What is hygiene?

Hygiene is the practice of keeping yourself and your

surroundings clean, especially in order to prevent illness
or the spread of diseases. Hygiene promotes good health,
like washing our hands and taking showers
Types of Hygiene

• Personal Hygiene: This involves taking care of your body

and grooming to maintain good health. This can be
practiced by regularly washing your hands, brushing
your teeth, bathing or showering, and keeping your nails
clean.
Types of Hygiene

• Oral Hygiene: Dental hygiene refers to the practices and habits

that help maintain the health of our teeth and gums. It includes
brushing our teeth at least twice a day, using dental floss to clean
between our teeth, and regularly visiting the dentist for check-ups
and cleanings. Good dental hygiene is important for preventing
tooth decay, gum disease, and bad breath. Taking care of our
teeth not only keeps our smiles looking great, but also contributes
to our overall health.
Types of Hygiene

• Food hygiene: refers to the practices and precautions taken to ensure

the safety and cleanliness of the food we consume. It involves proper
handling, storage, preparation, and cooking of food to prevent
contamination and the growth of harmful bacteria. This includes
washing hands before and after handling food, keeping raw and cooked
foods separate, cooking food thoroughly, and storing leftovers properly.
Following good food hygiene practices helps prevent foodborne illnesses
and ensures that the food we eat is safe and healthy.
Types of Hygiene
• Enironmental hygiene: refers to the practices and measures
taken to maintain cleanliness and sanitation in our
surroundings. It involves keeping our living and working
spaces clean, properly disposing of waste, and preventing
the spread of germs and diseases. This includes regular
cleaning and disinfection of surfaces, proper waste
management, and maintaining good ventilation.
Environmental hygiene plays a crucial role in promoting
health and preventing the spread of infections. By keeping
our environment clean, we create a safer and healthier place
for ourselves and those around us.
Types of Hygiene
• Respiratory hygiene refers to the practices and habits
that help prevent the spread of respiratory infections
and diseases. It involves simple actions like covering
your mouth and nose with a tissue or your elbow when
coughing or sneezing, disposing of used tissues properly,
and washing your hands regularly. These practices help
reduce the transmission of respiratory droplets that can
contain germs and viruses. By practicing good
respiratory hygiene, we can protect ourselves and others
from respiratory illnesses like colds, flu, and COVID-19
