Digital Electronics – Experiment - 2

2023/24 Spring

OBJECTIVE
Use of logic gates for implementing logic circuits and simplification of logic circuit by using Boolean algebra. NAND gate implementations.

• Components
- 7400 NAND Gate
- 7404 NOT Gate
- 7408 AND Gate
- 7410 NAND Gate
- 7432 OR Gate
- Switch (x4)
- LED (x10)
- 4.7 kΩ (x3)
- 470 Ω (x6)
- 330 Ω (x6)

PRELIMINARY WORK
Part 1 1. Determine the Boolean Function of the C, D, E, F, G nodes for the circuit given
in Figure 1.

2. Calculate the truth table of this circuit and fill in Table 1.

3. Draw the circuit in a simulator (EasyEda, Proteus etc.) and put a screenshot of the work.

4. Simplify the output of this circuit (G) using basic identities of Boolean Algebra and plot the simplified circuit. Do not use Karnaugh Map
simplification. 5. Calculate the truth table of this simplified circuit and fill in Table 2.

PROCEDURE Part 1
1. Construct the circuit given in Figure 1.
2. Correctly place the 14-pin package 7404, 7408 and
7432 by using datasheet.
3. Connect +5V voltage source and ground to the circuit.

4. Run the simulation and observe the output of the circuit.

Properly connect the other output led to C, D, E and F
nodes. Apply all
input combinations and fill the result in Table 4.

6. According to your
preliminary work, construct
the simplified version of the
given circuit in Figure 1. 7.
Apply all input combinations
and fill the result in Table 5.

8. Plot the time diagram of the circuit according

to your results in Table 4. To do this, apply two
square signals using signal function
generator for A and B with the frequencies 500 Hz and 1 kHz (you may apply this for just observing G, the rest may be filled directly).
