Heads of missions adopt Khuis primary

KHUIS - Heads of Missions
have adopted Khuis Primary
School in Tsabong District.
The announcement was made
by the Dean of the Diplomatic
Corps, Dr Athalia Molokomme
to a thunderous applause from
members of Khuis community
after a tour of Lobu Small Stock
Farm at Khuis on Monday.
Botswana envoys,
Ambassadors and High
Commissioners and
representatives of the

accredited to Botswana donated

at the school.

school. It is such a wonderful

French Secretary of State for
Development, Francophone
and International Partners,
Ms Chrysoula Zacharopoulou
landed in Botswana yesterday on
a two-day visit at the invitation
of Minister of Foreign Affairs,
Dr Lemogang Kwape.
While in the country, Ms
Zacharopoulou is expected to
pay a courtesy call to President
Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi as well
as hold bilateral talks with
Ministers of Foreign Affairs,
State President, Agriculture,
Commutations, Knowledge and
Technology, Youth, Gender,
Sport and Culture as well as
Environment and Tourism.
Ms Zacharopoulou will also
tour the Ramatlabama Artificial
Insemination Centre as well as
the Botswana Innovation Hub.
Her working visit aims to
strengthen the existing bilateral
relations between Botswana and
France and explore potential
areas to enhance cooperation
between the two countries.
The two countries established
diplomatic relations in 1967
and have since enjoyed strong
bonds of friendship and fruitful
cooperation in various fields,
such as security, trade and
investment, transport and
communications, tourism,

by digitally connecting

Khuis Primary School head
teacher, Mr Lesheto Bareeleng
said the school was established
in 1936 and currently had 176
learners.
He said the school had been
performing well for the past
five years since 2019, having
achieved a quantity pass of 75 per
cent and quality pass of 50 per
cent in 2023, making it the best
performing school in the cluster.
Mr Bareeleng said they had a
challenge of lack of photocopying
machines, which could help them
improve results.
Other challenges include
unreliable electricity and limited
those experiencing challenges
in registering on the online
platform.
Mr Lesedi said he was
aware of crimes happening
on the internet and reassured
constituents that there were laws
in place such as the Cyber-crime
Law and Data Protection Act to
address such issues.

Khuis Primary School.
She said the resources would
help improve the school’s
performance, which required
tightly-knit stakeholder
involvement. She said such
partnerships in education were
pertinent to achieve better results.

Official urges envoys to support small stock industry

LOBU - Ministry of Agriculture
deputy permanent secretary,
Livestock Farming, Dr Boitumelo
Mogome-Maseko has implored
heads of mission to support local
small stock industry by striking
relevant partnerships abroad.
“We want to have strategic
alliances, with local and
international institution,” said
Dr Mogome-Maseko, when
addressing 40 envoys during a
tour of Lobu Smallstock Farm on
Monday.
The target is to transform Lobu
into a smart farm by adopting
smart agriculture technologies
and employing best agricultural
practices in the small stock
sector, she said highlighting that
government also wanted to turn
the farm into a training institute
with accredited programmes and
trainers so that it could train even
farmers from outside Botswana.
Therefore, she implored
heads of mission to explore
collaborations with international
institutions to develop the farm
further to enable it to run as a
sustainable institute.
She said the farm, which was
established in 1978, was currently
doing well in terms of producing
stock with superior genetics for
sale to farmers to improve their
flock.
So far she said since 2018, they
held auction sales, where the
farm sold 1 767 small stock of
superior genetics and 18 white
Brahman bulls. She divulged
that the Friday action sale sold
401 small stock, which included
56 studs and 101 rams, fetching
close to P1 million in a day.
She added that the farm had
154 bucks and 273 rams that were
ready for auction sale.

said the 10 800-hectares facility
had great potential for economic
diversification and the plan was
to have half the farm continue
with small stock rearing while the
other half would be sub-divided

farm, which boasted premier
breeds of Boer Goat, Savannah,
Saanen Goat, Dorper, Meat
Master, Damara and Swakara
sheep, currently had 2 506 sheep,
1 688 of which were studs and
1 284 goats, 386 of which were
studs.
She said studs were endowed
with superior genetics selected by
breeding societies. Furthermore,
she said, there were 81 white
Brahman cattle.
She however decried
insufficiency of the farm
borehole, adding that solar hydro
panels produced 500 litres of
drinking water per day and that
the farm was powered from
South Africa, which supply
was unreliable. All was not lost
though as Dr Mogome-Maseko
told the envoys that as the staff
had come up with a small stock
digitisation strategy to upgrade
infrastructure.
“We are in the process of
drilling more boreholes and
desalinating the water”.
She highlighted that the plan
was to also betuminise the gravel
road from Khuis to Lobu, employ
the use of drones and robotics,
use modern technology for fodder
production, employ computer
interfaced production, as well as
use GPS to track animals.
Further, she said the ministry
harbored plans to have online
auction sales, introduce smart
production and management
systems, climate smart and
at a time when diamonds were
competing with alternative
products such as synthetics.
“We consider you to be critical
stakeholders because you reside
in countries where we market
and sell our product. This is
therefore the opportune time
to meet and share the diamond
story so that you can proceed
to market our diamonds to the
world, and you came at the right
time when diamond prices have
gone down. We appreciate you
and your support in this regard
because you are better positioned
to market our product since you
are the final stage of our diamond
chain,” he noted.
He further said plans were
underway to establish diamond
corners at various missions,

However, he regretted that
Botswana’s diamonds had a low
global market share in India.
Consequently, he underscored

market the diamonds to the Indian
market, to counter synthetic
diamond marketing, which had
adverse effects on raw diamond
sales.
“We need to be aggressive
in selling our diamonds to the
Indian market because the
Indian government is currently
aggressively promoting

Police investigate murder, suicide

MAUN - Maun police are
investigating an incident what
is suspected to be a murder-
suicide incident that took place at
Mochaba, some few kilometres
from Shorobe over the weekend.
Station commander, Supt
Dennis Zilawe, confirmed to
BOPA that investigations were
ongoing to establish the cause of
two deaths involving a 20-year-
old woman and a 28-year-old
man who were reported to be in
a relationship.
He said police received a
report on Sunday morning from
the man’s parents after they
found him hanging from a tree,
some metres away from their
homestead.
He said the duo were said to
be cohabiting at the home of the
man’s parents, and on Sunday
morning when the whole family
gathered for breakfast as usual,
the duo did not show up.
Supt Zilawe said the concerned
parents then sent one of the
siblings to check on the couple
and upon arrival at their tent,
the child found the woman lying
down motionless and tried to
wake her up.
“Noticing that she was not
responding, she alerted the
parents who rushed to the tent
and their efforts to wake her up
were in vain.
Then they traced the man and
found him hanging from a tree
just some few metres from home
and they reported the matter to
the police,” he added.
He said the police went to the
scene and took the two bodies to
Letsholathebe Memorial Hospital
where they were certified dead.
Supt Zilawe said because the
woman had no injuries, a post
mortem would be conducted on
her body to establish the cause of
her death.
Supt Zilawe disclosed that
on the same day, they had
recorded a fatal accident along
the Makalamabedi road which
claimed the life of a 39 year
old woman (driver) when her
car collided with a van that
was heading to Makalamabedi
from Maun. He said police
investigations were ongoing
to establish the cause of the
accident.
Meanwhile, the police are on
a massive search for a 12-year
old school going boy who went
missing on Monday.

GABORONE - The current
rains that have been experienced
in most parts of the country have
come to an end, says Department
of Meteorological Services,
Meteorologist Mr Samuel
Ramotonto.
Mr Ramotonto informed BOPA
on Tuesday that temperatures
across the country would
continue to be mild and warm
with instances of cold weather
in the Southern region of the
country for most of the times.
With the winter season
approaching, he said the outlook
was not ready as yet, but noted
that the winter forecast would be
released in due time.
He advised Batswana to

weather pattern changes saying
that was essential for maintaining
good health and wellbeing.

Bakwena embrace Chema Chema

MOLEPOLOLE - After last
week’s launch of the Chema
Chema Fund by Vice President,
Mr Slumber Tsogwane in Maun,
scores of Bakwena informal
sector entrepreneurs on Monday
congregated at the Local
Enterprise Authority (LEA)
offices to register for the fund.
The fund is intended and
designed to elevate informal
sector entrepreneurs to a higher
standard and income.

Following the launch of the
Fund on April 05, 2024, a press
release from the Ministry of
Entrepreneurship advises the
public to take note and deal with
appropriate authorities as no one
is to be charged to be trained or
being assisted when applying
for Chema Chema funds.
The press release emphasises
that Chema Chema Fund
appointed two implementing
authorities, being the Local
Enterprise Authority (LEA)
dealing with registering and
training all qualifying citizens,
while Citizen Entrepreneurial
Development Agency (CEDA)
will deal with the disbursement
of funds after assessing
applications of qualifying
applicants.
“No other person, company
or entity has the authority or a
legitimate basis for claiming
to offer administrative or other
such training services, including
consultancies to deal with the
guidelines or disbursement
process,” says the press release.
Apart from LEA and CEDA,
the press release says any other
person claiming to be involved
with training of the public or
first-hand involvement with
the fund’s operational process
should be avoided.
It says the public must be
wary of being misinformed or
taken for an avoidable ride.
If in doubt and outside LEA
and CEDA, members of the
public are advised to double
check with government offices
in their respective localities,
primarily with the Ministry of

informal sector traders before

has issued a public notice
cautioning members of the
public against the recent
proliferation of misinformation
on social media platforms of
certain individuals or entities
claiming to provide Chema
Chema Fund capacity-building
services to the informal sector.
“We have also noted that
several unauthorised social
media pages alleging to
represent Chema Chema Fund
have surfaced,” it adds. “We
would like to state that Chema
Chema Fund does not have an
official Facebook page or any
other social media platform.”
It says all official
communications, updates
and announcements about
Chema Chema Fund will
be disseminated through
recognised government media
outlets as well as official social
media pages of CEDA and LEA.
“We urge the public to
exercise caution and discretion
when encountering information
related to the Chema Chema
Fund on social media platforms,”
says the press release.
Chema Chema Fund is a
government-led initiative aimed
at providing affordable short-
term loans and support services
to citizen informal sector
businesses in Botswana.
As such, accurate and verified
information must be shared
with the public to prevent
misinformation and confusion.
Any queries or concerns
regarding Chema Chema
Fund should be directed to
the relevant authorities for

interventions targeted at
accelerating economic

The advice by Women in
Business Association (WIBA)
president, Ms Nametso Ntsosa-
Carr suggests that beneficiaries
should not skew their ideas into
one line of service offering, but
find ways to complement one
another’s line of trade.
Speaking in an interview with
BOPA Monday, Ms Ntsosa-Carr
said it would not make a sound
economic decision for people in
one community to trade in the
same service or product, stressing
that it was paramount to build
diversity.

cultivate a winning mindset and
business etiquette to remain
steadfast in running sustainable
first because they had health
issues.

said she would employ other
youth if funded in order to reduce
the number of unemployed
people.
Mr Lennwe said registration
could be done physically at their
offices or online using the link

financial literacy. We hope these
trainings would have a bearing
on our members’ businesses,” she

to normalise opening bank
accounts to save proceeds on a
daily basis to avoid mugging. She
said they should also develop a
relationship with the bank.

qualifying women to rise to
the occasion and work towards
changing, helping diversify the

Family Feud Botswana finally here

GABORONE - Some
Batswana families will soon
appear on our screens in a new
television drama called Family
Feud Botswana.
The show commences this
month and applications from
all Batswana families who wish
to participate in the drama are
welcomed.
It follows a collaborative
partnership between government
and Steve Harvey Global on the
Botswana Ignite project.
The project seeks to nurture
local talent and to foster growth
within the television and video
production industry.
It will be hosted by Steve
Harvey and the shooting will
start in August, said Steve
Harvey Global chief legal
officer, Duncan Irwine, who is
also Forge Media chief executive
officer.
Irwine, who was speaking at
the launch of Botswana Ignite,
said the show would be one of
the first productions and that two
families of five people, with an
age limit of 18, would feature in
the production.
He added that the production
would give Batswana creative
students the opportunity to learn
the fundamentals of production
as they would work with Steve
Harvey.
“We are also going to have an
international drama and reality
show that we will be shooting in
addition to Family Feud,” Irwine
said.
Furthermore, he said Botswana
television would also have local
productions for game shows, talk
shows and kids shows.
He added that three local
production companies would be
selected to air their work once
they had unpacked what they had
pitched.
He added that they would
be embed with experienced
production crews that was
relevant to their production.
He also said they would give
them experienced production
crews in various aspects.
“The experienced crew will
walk side by side with them all
the way through the process,”
he said, adding that it included
finance, production, structure,
running orders, casting and
briefing.
The end goal, Irwine said, was

to engage in predictions, more

BAA tightens rules

GABORONE - In their effort to
avert the mushrooming of hosting
of road running competitions, the
Botswana Athletics Association
(BAA) has come up with hosting
guidelines.
The organisation’s vice president,
Oabona Theetso said in an interview
that they had realised that some
organisations or individuals
organised marathons, which were
not sanctioned by the country’s
athletics governing body.
Theetso said it was against this
backdrop that BAA found it prudent
to come up with a mitigation plan in
the form of a guidelines or manual
that would control events held in the
country under the auspices of the
BAA.
“It was disturbing that as the
governing body, we will read in
newspapers or social media that
there was a marathon in a certain
town or village without theBAA’s
knowledge,” he said.
Theetso said what was also
disturbing was the fact that athletes
were charged a hefty registration fee,
whereas others do not even follow
procedures of hosting a marathon.
Furthermore, he said as athletics
watchdogs in Botswana, they had
to ensure that the right procedures
were followed and athletes were
protected.
He said, as it was, every marathon
would be licensed from the office,
adding that those willing to host
would have to apply and be given a
date.
“Where possible, looking at the
magnitude of the event, there is
going to be a licensing fee. We
are aware that there are a lot of
marathons; people just make money
and some do not even give back to
the community,” he said
According to the hosting
guidelines, the BAA shall do
needs assessment first before an
application to host is granted and
the affiliated clubs shall consult first
with their members for buy-in and
support of the event.
The guidelines say the affiliated
clubs should consult first with their
