Today I am going to talk about radiotherapy in prosthesis

There is two types of treatment for malignant tumors which they are surgical way or radiotherapy or
combination

The treatment modalities of

malignant neoplasm

• Surgical resection

• Chemotherapy

• Radiotherapy

• Combination

----And there is types of radiations

1- Clinical radiation generators External

beam (Most common for largest fields)

2-Brachytherapy

as Interstitial therapy implants

factors affects the rate of damage

radiation dose

---types of radiation

the rate of delivery

size of area to be radiated

sensitivity of cells

radical neck dissection

---Effects of radiation on oral and

paraoral tissues

• A- Immediate effects

• 1. oral mucous menbrane

• 2. tongue and lip

• 3. eyes

• 4. salivary gland

• B- Delayed effects

Then we are going to talk about importance of radiotherapy prosthesis

1- reduce the side effects of the treatment

2- protect tissues (that not receive Rad.)

3- safer for radiotherapist

4- increase the accuracy of radiation source

5- more cooperative patient

General Requirement for the prosthesis

1-Comfort 2- Minimal weight 3- Stability 4- Self retaining 5- Accuracy 6-Minimal adjustment 7- Breakage
resistance 8- Easy to repair 9- Easy to clean 10-Allows to breath easily 11- Allows to visual the tissues 12-
Easy to place and remove by the patient

Then iam going to talk about

Management of dentulous irradiated patient

Before radiation

• Pre-radiation extraction:

Full mouth extraction

Conservative extraction approach

Moderately aggressive approach

• The selection depends on:

Dental disease factors

Radiation delivery factors

After radiation

• Teeth extraction

• Restorative treatment

• Flouride application

• Endodontic treatment
