Verification of Boyle’s Law

Objective:
To study the effects of pressure and volume on each other if we
increase one by keeping the other constant.

picture:

Apparatus:
Boyle’s Apparatus.

Procedure:
1. Set the apparatus and turn on the machine.
2. Check all the things are in place and the instruments are clean
and working.
3. Measure the length of the container in which the oil is to be
filled and also the pressure on the dial gauge.
4. Now start the oil pump, the oil level in the empty container will
start to rise, as the oil is being pumped into the container.
5. The pressure on the gauge will also start increasing note the
pressure change and also the height change.
6. This is the gauge pressure, add the atmospheric pressure in it to
make it absolute and also with the change in pressure also at

2
the same instant measure the height changes by which we can
calculate the change in volume.
7. Make a calculation table and plot the graph between pressure
and volume.
8. The temperature of the experiment should be held constant or
Boyle’s law will not be applicable.

Observations and Results:

Area of the column = A=𝜋𝑟2
Volume of the Air column = V = 𝜋𝑟2𝛥ℎ
𝛥ℎ is the changing height.
Radius of the column = 𝑅

Conclusion:
By comparing values in the PV column and via the graph we see that PV = constant
We will be looking more closely at Boyle's law
Application:
You can observe a real-life application of Boyle's Law when you fill your bike tires
with air. When you pump air into a tire, the gas molecules inside the tire get
compressed and packed closer together. This increases the pressure of the gas, and it
starts to push against the walls of the tire.

Verification of Gay Lussac’s Law

Objective:
To study the effects of pressure and temperature on each other if we increase
one what will happen to the other by keeping the volume constant.
Picture:

Apparatus:
Gay Lussac’s Apparatus.

Procedure:
1. Set the apparatus and turn on the machine.
2. Check all the things are in place and the instruments are
clean and working.
3. Fill gas in the apparatus’s beaker.
4. Turn on the heater now temperature of gas will start to increase.
5. Note the temperature and pressure of gas at any instant.
6. Now again note temperature and pressure of gas at
different intervals of time.
7. Volume of the gas must be kept constant or the law will
not be applicable.

Temperature (T)

Conclusion:
We learned about Gay Lussac’s Law of Thermodynamics. It is an important study to
learn about the behavior of ideal gasses. Gay Lussac’s law has application in real life
too.

6
Application:
If we heat an aerosol can, the increased temperature causes the gases to change.
According to Gay Lussac’s Law, the pressure built up in the can may result in an
explosion.
