1 PURPOSE OF DOCUMENT
The purpose of this document is to define the following objectives for the Drainage &
dewatering system for HULU TERENGGANU HEP:
• Input parameters for design
• System and operation general description
• Major technical features
• Design and selection criteria.
• Equipment main data & basic arrangement layout

3 INPUT PARAMETERS

3.1 HYDRAULIC CONDITION


The hydraulic conditions under which the turbine shall be operated are given below:

Dam Side (Puah Reservoir water Level)


Maximum Flood Level : EL.298.40 m
Full supply level : EL.296.00 m
Minimum operating Level for two turbine : EL.276.00 m

Tail Race Side (Kenyir Lake)


Maximum flood level : EL.152.70 m
Full supply level : EL.145.0 m
Tail bay weir elevation : EL.136.00 m
Maximum water temperature : 27.5 ° C

4 POWER HOUSE DRAINAGE & DEWATERING SYSTEM

4.1 POWER HOUSE DRAINAGE SYSTEM

4.1.1 PURPOSE OF THE SYSTEM


The purpose of this system is to remove the seepage, normal drainage and fire water from the different
floors of the powerhouse, main access tunnel, shaft seal, and cable ventilation tunnel. Apart from
above only seepage from Transformer cavern, Transformer cavern access tunnel, Bus duct galleries
(IPB), auxiliary emergency tunnel shall be collected in oil side of sump through civil trench (by CW2).
Seepage, normal drainage, Oil and fire water for turbine floor shall be discharged in oil side of sump
through trench/vault (by CW2).
• Seepage is calculated considering entire walls & crown surface area of the powerhouse & above-
mentioned areas seepage calculated @ 1Liter per minute/6m2.

Total seepage : 206.9 m³/hr (estimated),

• Normal Leakage for all Unit of Power house:

1. Head cover : 29.0 m³/hr

2. Shaft seal : 29.0 m³/hr

• Turbine floor Drainage, Leakage:


1. Equipment (filter, separator). drain
2. Turbine floor Leakage :44 m3/hr

• Accidental leakages:
1. Exceptional firewater flow from Hydrant system: 114 m3/hr for 2 Hydrants.
The total pumping design capacity of the drainage system shall be considering the calculated seepage
plus normal leakage for two units, turbine floor drainage/leakage and accidental fire water as
D mentioned above during normal operation.
4.1.2 SYSTEM DESCRIPTION
This system consists of:
• Two (2nos.) (1 working + 1 stand-by) submersible bottom suction centrifugal type drainage
pumps, each having 360 m3/hr discharging capacity,
• One (1no.) submersible bottom suction centrifugal type sump pump, having 36 m3/hr & 37mWC
with 20m flexible hose & cable shall be provided at the bottom of drainage pump pit for cleaning
and maintenance of drainage pit equipments,
• A pipe network to discharge drainage water from Powerhouse drainage pit to the tail race surge
chamber above EL.153.50 m through dedicated discharge pipe,
• One set of isolation valve and non-return valve shall be provided in common discharge header to
connect the hose from portable sump pump,

Drainage flow of Powerhouse, main access tunnel, shaft seal, Transformer cavern, Transformer cavern
access tunnel, cable ventilation tunnel, Bus duct galleries (IPB), and auxiliary emergency tunnel shall
be collected in the drainage sump through the civil trench. Drainage pump will be used to remove
seepage & drainage water directed by gravity drains around the power house, seepage, normal
drainage & separated water from oil for turbine floor. The water level in oil side of sump reaches up to
the level of weir wall, this level is maintained in such a way that whenever oil leaks from turbine floor,
D being lighter than water; it floats in oil side of sump over the water surface.
Level switches shall be provided in the water side of drainage pit to give signals for automatic pump
start, stop, emergency stop and alarm for maximum water level in the sump. The Powerhouse
drainage sump shall be located at EL 123.30 m.
The seepage from Transformer cavern, cable ventilation tunnel and tunnel between transformer cavern
& service bay shall be directed towards sump (2000 x 2000 x 2300: LxWxH all in mm) provided in
Transformer cavern. Soak pit (11000 x 7500 x 1200: LxWxH all in mm) shall be provided below each
D Unit Transformer. Both soak pits shall be collectively sized to contain single transformer firefighting
water for 40 minutes and volume of oil contained in single Transformer. Common interconnection pipe
between soak pits and seepage collecting sump shall be provided with motorized valve. In event of fire
in transformer, this motorized valve will be closed by Fire alarm panel. A small pit (1000 x 1000 x
2300: LxWxH) shall be provided to access motorized valve.
Transformer oil / water separation system including piping & any other necessary accessories to
discharge accidental water from fire water demand of transformer deluge system from transformer
access tunnel to out side power house are within CW2 scope of supply/ services.

Suitable oil skimmer of 100 LPH capacity and three hour per day duty cycle shall be provided in order
to remove oil from oil side of drainage pit. A separate portable oil handling pump (having capacity of
6m3/hr) shall be provided in the oil side of drainage pit. Grating for portable oil handling pump shall be
provided by CW2.
Each drainage pump shall be provided with isolation valve, non-return valve, and pressure indicator
and pressure switch at the outlet of pump. Air scouring tap shall be provided in common header. Pipe
shall be designed to have maximum water flow velocity between 3m/sec.

Note:
Design and construction of all sumps/pits shall be within CW2 scope of supply/ services.
4.1.3 POWER HOUSE DRAINAGE PIT
• Powerhouse drainage pit size shall be approximately 9600 x 2900 x 4000 mm (including slab
thickness).
• In normal leakage case, Pump shall maintain water level below draft tube floor slab EL 127.30m. .
• Minimum pumping water level for drainage submersible pump is about 0.6m from bottom of pit.
• The proposed distance between level switches to start/stop the pumps are indicated in
H-674500GMA00001FB.
Pump cycle time shall be as follow:
Normal Drainage Seepage Rate in Power House pit: 308.90 m3/hr
One drainage pump flow rate: 360 m3/hr
Pit cross-section area (water side): 7.3 x 2.9 = 21.17 m2
Time before start = Time for filling the sump under normal flow rate up to 1st pump starts
= 0.8 x 21.17 x 60 = 3.29 minute

Time before stop = Time for emptying under normal flow rate
= Volume in Tank (m3) = 0.8 x 21.17 x 60

4.2 POWER HOUSE DEWATERING SYSTEM
Three (3nos.: 2W + 1S) dewatering pumps shall be provided for draft tube dewatering & same pumps
(3 nos.: 2W + 1S) shall be used for tailrace dewatering along with two (2nos.) tailrace dewatering
booster pumps provided at EL.162.0m at Construction adit to surge chamber.
4.2.1 PURPOSE OF THE DRAFT TUBE DEWATERING SYSTEM
The purpose of this system is to dewater turbine draft tube and that portion of the power conduit
below tail race water level when turbine is being dewatered for maintenance purpose.

4.2.1.1 DRAFT TUBE DEWATERING SYSTEM DESCRIPTION


The system consists of:
• Dewatering dry sump common for Draft tube & tailrace dewatering system,
• One (1no.) gate valve for each Unit Draft tube dewatering header in the sump shall be provided,
• Three (3nos.:2W + 1S) submersible bottom suction centrifugal type pumps, each having 550 m3/hr
capacity shall be installed in a dry sump in surge chamber between Draft tube gates of Two Units.
The expected dewatering time will not be more than six hour (considering two pumps in
operation),
• A dedicated pipe network to evacuate dewatering water from unit draft tube to the surge chamber
above EL145.00m.and air scouring tap shall also be provided in dewatering header.
• Pipe shall be designed to have maximum water flow velocity between 3-4m/sec.
 Total volume to be de-watered (headrace / Penstock, Spiral case, Draft tube & Gate leakage =
4693.80 m3 (estimated).
Draft tube dewatering is manual process. However, pump start/stop shall be controlled automatically
by suction/discharge pressure switch.
Isolation valve at the inlet suction header of tailrace dewatering booster pumps shall be closed
manually during normal draft tube dewatering operation. One pressure switch in the suction header of
Dewatering pumps shall be provided. For dewatering pumps (2W + 1S), pipe network shall be
equipped with isolation valves, non-return valves, pressure indicator, and pressure switch at the outlet
of pump.
Two (2 nos.) portable submersible pumps, each having capacity of 15 m3/hr shall be installed in
dewatering sump in surge chamber to evacuate seepage water from dewatering sump. Start/stop
operation of these pumps shall be based on level switches provided in the sump. This may be required
due to seepage in the dewatering pit during normal operation, or to provide maintenance access to the
dewatering pit equipment. A dedicated discharge pipe network to surge chamber 2 mtrs. above
EL.153.50m shall be provided.
4.2.2 PURPOSE OF THE TAILRACE DEWATERING SYSTEM
The purpose of this system is to dewater tailrace for maintenance purpose.
4.2.2.1 TAILRACE DEWATERING SYSTEM DESCRIPTION

• Three (3nos.:2W + 1S) dewatering pumps shall be used for tailrace dewatering process,
• Two (2nos.) tailrace dewatering booster pumps shall be provided in Construction Adit to surge
chamber at EL.162.00m,
• A dedicated pipe network from dewatering pump pit of surge chamber to outlet of main access
tunnel at EL.195.50m through tailrace dewatering booster pumps,
• A pressure switch at common suction header of tailrace dewatering booster pump shall be provided,
• The expected tailrace dewatering time shall not be more than 120 hour.
Tailrace dewatering is manual process. Isolation valve at the inlet suction header of tailrace dewatering
booster pumps shall be opened manually & isolation valve at common outlet header for Draft tube
dewatering shall be closed manually before starting dewatering pumps.
 Total estimated surge chamber volume = 4930 m3
 Total estimated tailrace volume = 65118.5 m3
Each dewatering pump shall be provided with isolation valve, non-return valve, and pressure indicator
and pressure switch at the outlet of pump. Air scouring tap shall be provided in common header. Pipe
shall be designed to have maximum water flow velocity between 3 - 4m/sec.
