Aripiprazole Monograph

• Therapeutic classification
an antipsychotic medicine that is used to treat schizophrenia in adults and children
at least 13 years old.

Aripiprazole is also used in children 6 years or older who have Tourette's disorder, or
symptoms of autistic disorder (irritability, aggression, mood swings, temper
tantrums, and self-injury).

Aripiprazole is used alone or with a mood stabilizer medicine to treat bipolar I


disorder (manic depression) in adults and children at least 10 years old.

Aripiprazole is primarily available under the brand name Abilify, but there might be
generic versions available as well

• Dosage forms of aripiprazole


Aripiprazole is available in several dosage forms, including tablets, orally
disintegrating tablets, and an injectable solution. Tablet strengths typically range
from 2 mg to 30 mg. Orally disintegrating tablets usually come in strengths of 10 mg
and 15 mg. The injectable solution is available in strengths of 7.5 mg/mL, 9.75
mg/mL, and 300 mg/2 mL
• Administration
Administer aripiprazole orally or by IM injection. Administer aripiprazole lauroxil only
by IM injection.

Establish tolerability with oral aripiprazole prior to initiating IM therapy with


extended-release aripiprazole or aripiprazole lauroxil.

Oral Administration

Administer orally as conventional tablets, tablets with sensor, orally disintegrating


tablets, or oral solution once daily without regard to meals.

Available as kits containing extended-release aripiprazole lauroxil injectable


suspension in prefilled syringes and safety needles for IM injection. Prior to use, tap
the prefilled syringe ≥10 times to dislodge any material that may have settled, then
shake vigorously for ≥30 seconds to ensure a uniform suspension.

Storage

Oral tablets

25°C (may be exposed to 15–30°C).

Oral Solution

25°C (may be exposed to 15–30°C). After opening, can use for up to 6 months (but
not beyond expiration date).

Parenteral

Extended-release Aripiprazole (e.g., Abilify Maintena)

Prefilled dual-chamber syringe: <30°C. Do not freeze. Protect syringe from light;
store in original package until time of use.

Vial: 25°C (may be exposed to 15–30°C)

• Compatibility
Syringe and IM Injection: Aripiprazole injections are formulated for IM
administration and are compatible with syringe use for this purpose. They are
intended for deep intramuscular injection only.
IV Infusion: Aripiprazole injection is not intended for IV infusion
Y-Site Injection: Since aripiprazole injection is not formulated for IV use, it should
not be administered via Y-site injection into IV lines.
