Introduction

The term Windows describes all the generations of


Microsoft operating system products. These products are
arranged from the oldest to the newest versions as
follows:
In November 1985, Microsoft released Windows 1.0

In October 1987, Windows 2.0 is released and followed by


Windows 2.1

In 1990 Windows 3.0 is released


Introduction

In 1992 an improved version of Windows 3.0 named


Windows 3.1 is released, this version allows:
- Using a mouse
- Use of multitask
In 1995 Windows 95 is released, this version allows:
- Use the mouse right click in addition to the left
click
- Plug and Play
- Improve the auto play features
- Improve memory handling.
Introduction

In 1998 an improved version of Windows 95 named


Windows 98 is released

In September 2000, Windows ME is introduced as the


upgrade version of Windows 98

In the next years, many versions of Windows released


such as Windows 2000, Windows NT, Windows XP,
Windows vista and Windows 7 and finally Windows 10.

Microsoft Office Programs are collections of the most


software applications designed in response to the user
requests, they include:

– Microsoft Word – Microsoft Publisher


– Microsoft Excel – Microsoft FrontPage

– Microsoft Access – Microsoft PhotoDraw

– Microsoft PowerPoint – Microsoft Outlook

Microsoft Word

Is a full-featured word processing program allows the


user to; create many types of personal and business
communications, including announcement, letters,
business documents, academic reports and other forms
of written documents. It is also detects and
autocorrects errors in spelling and grammars.

Is a spreadsheet program allows the user to organize


data, make complete calculation, make decisions,
graph data, develop professional looking reports,
publish organized data on the web and access real data
from web.

Microsoft Access
It is a database (collection of data organized in a
manner that can be accessed, retrieve and use that data)
management system (DBMS). The Microsoft Access
allows the user to create a database, add, change and
delete data in the database, sort data, retrieve data,
create forms, make queries and make reports using the
data in the database. It can publish organized data on
the web and access real data from web.

Is a complete presentation graphics program allows the


user to produce professional-looking presentations,
dynamic presentations include multimedia features
such as sounds, movies and pictures. It can publish
data on the web and access real data from web

It allows the user to design and produce professional-
quality documents (newsletters, flyers, brochures,
business cards, Web sites and so on) that combine text,
graphics and photographs, it also allows the users to
logos.
It includes more than 10000 clip art images, 1500
photographs, 1000 web art graphics, 175 fonts, and
340 animated graphics in addition to download

Is a business graphics software


program, it allows the user to
create eye-catching business
graphics to be used in document
and presentations on the Web; it

It is a desktop information management program (DIM), it
helps the user to organize personal and business
information such as contacts, tasks, activities, and
documents.When the user starts Outlook it displays this
information.

There is another computer operating system named


UNIX produced by Bell laboratories. There are
many version of the UNIX, but the Windows
operating system is the most popular one.
In this chapter, the running and the fundamentals
of Windows vista are introduced.

Getting Started

After the computer is turned ON, the desktop screen is


displayed. In this screen a work area that uses menus,
icons and windows to simulate the top of the desk
appears, as shown in the figure

At the end of the screen, there is start menu, this menu


lets the user to access the most folders, programs and
commands on the computer, and this start menu is shown
in the bottom of figure

The mouse:
The mouse has two buttons left and right most actions use
the left button, the right button always displays a shortcut
menu and is a key to work quickly.
To activate an item, move the pointer of the mouse over
the item and click left. To open the item, point to the item
and double click by the left button. To drag, point to an
item, then press and hold the left mouse button while you
move the pointer to the new location.

The keyboard:
The keyboard has many functions, in addition to
typing texts; it can be used instead of mouse to
issue commands. Windows provides hundreds of
keyboard shortcuts that perform every mouse
functions. Using keyboard shortcuts is usually
faster than using the mouse to do the same thing.

In addition to the keys for letters, numbers and


symbols, the keyboard has other types of keys:
Modifier keys:
Shift, used to type the uppercase symbols or extend the
selection when used with the mouse.
Ctrl used to modify the function of other keys (control).
Alt used to access menu or modify the function of other
keys (Alternate).

In addition to the keys for letters, numbers and


symbols, the keyboard has other types of keys:

Function keys: These keys along the keyboard


top or left side and labelled F1, F2, … and so on,
their function depend on the program used.

In addition to the keys for letters, numbers and
symbols, the keyboard has other types of keys:
Navigation keys: home, press to move to the beginning of the line
or row. End, press to move to the end of the line or row. Page up,
when pressed scroll to the previous page. Page down, when pressed
move one page down. Arrow keys, move the insertion point to the
direction of the arrow.
To use the keyboard shortcut, hold down the modifier key(s), then,
press the specified letter, number, symbol or function key at last
release these keys.

Icons:

In Windows, the user can select an icon or group of


icons to perform an action.

To select an icon: click it or press the arrow keys until


the icon is selected or press the first letter of the
icon's name, if more than one icon have the same
initial letter, press the letter repeatedly until the
required icon is selected

To select multiple icons: Ctrl + click each icon you


want to select or drag the selection rectangle around
the icons or Click the first icon, then, Shift + click the
last icon, the icons in between are selected.
To deselect an icon: if the icon is not in group, click
anywhere on the screen other than the selected icon, if
the icon is a member of a group Ctrl + click the icon.

To display an item's properties:


One of the following alternatives can be used:
1) Right click the item and choose properties as
shown in figure (2 – 4).
2) Select the item and press Alt + Enter.
3) Hold down Alt and double click the item

Transferring data:
To transfer the data from a location to another location,
copy, cut and paste are used:
Cut: removes the information from its original location.
Paste: places the information elsewhere.
Copy: copies the information elsewhere.

Security:
There are three pronged defences will protect the computer
from most attacks:
1 – Firewall: A firewall is a secure boundary between your
computer and the internet, protecting the computer against
external threats such as crackers and malicious programs.
2 – Software updates: Windows Update monitors the
Microsoft website for new security patches, updates, bug
fixes and hardware drivers, which it downloads and installs
promptly.

Security:
There are three pronged defences will protect the computer
from most attacks:
3 – Malware protection: Malicious software, or Malware,
includes viruses and spyware. Antivirus and antispyware
programs find and remove Malware from your hard drives,
down load files, and email attachments. Most Malware
programs include an antoupdate feature to counter
emerging threats.
To open Security Center: Choose Start > Control panel >
Security > Security Center.

The Security Centre has dash-board of indicator lights for the


computer's firewall, updates, Malware and other security settings.
For each item, a green sign labelled On mean that every thing is

OK, otherwise, the user see a red sign labelled Off. Check
Settings, Not Found, Not Monitored, or Out of Date. Click one of
the headings to expand that section and to learn what is the
problem? And what to do about it?
