JOURNAL WEEK 8

NUMBER OF JOURNAL :8

DATE : 17 TH MARCH 2024 – 21ST MARCH 2024

TOPIC : THE INTEGRATION OF ICT IN TEACHING AND

LEARNING

1.0 FOCUSED ISSUE

The focused issue of this week is the integration of ICT in teaching and
learning. During the eighth week of practicum, I often have the opportunity to bring
my both classes to the computer lab to give them learning through the ICT. Since
their classes do not provide LCD projector, I needed to book some dates so that me
and my classes can use the lab. It was indeed a good move to attract pupils’
attention in learning as it was enjoyable. However, I noticed that some of my pupils
tend to lose focus on the main content and started to ask me about other decorations
such as the cartoons in the PowerPoint and others. This will lead them to not getting
what I taught them thus the teaching and learning were useless.

2.0 ANALYSIS

The main cause of the issue above might be the overly decorated teaching
aids that will disrupt pupils’ learning. At the same time, the colorful cartoons for sure
will catch their eyes as they are not used to learn in that particular way. The use of
colorful PowerPoint, online quizzes might bring the benefits to the pupils, but teacher
needed to realize that some of them can be easily distracted. Therefore, I must be
brilliant in making the teaching aids to be displayed to my pupils so that their
attention can be seized to the maximum.

Teacher must take note that using ICT does not guarantee the effectiveness
of the learning to the pupils. Hence, teacher needs to aware that the use of ICT must
be corresponding to the level or age of the pupils. The pupils who are older need to
be shown a direct information without overly decorated as it will bother their learning
and focuses. Software can ensure that learners are given tasks at an appropriate
level that can be matched to their prior attainment or their individual needs (Lynch,
Fawcett and Nicolson, 2000). It means that my pupils of Year 3 and Year 4 should
not be shown any software such as PowerPoint and others with so many
decorations, cartoons, and so on in order to ensure their concentration to the lesson
taught.

3.0 SUGGESTIONS FOR IMPROVEMENTS

To overcome the issue, I conclude that there are some solutions that I need to do.
One of the solutions is that I need to prepare teaching aids through ICT that will suit
my pupils’ age. Besides, I can prepare any activity that will ensure that the pupils are
continuously doing a work while looking at my PowerPoint such as copying the
sentences and taking a main idea.

4.0 PERIOD OF TIME TO RESOLVE THE ISSUE

17th March 2024 -21st March 2024

5.0 REFLECTION

In conclusion, the step taken was a success. By thinking of alternatives to

overcome the issue, I could provide a more effective teaching and learning
experience for the pupils by preparing useful visual teaching aids that will ensure the
participation of the pupils to the maximum.
