REPENT! SHE SAYS
Street preacher waving the bible tall
At the corner they listens to her call
Vendors & customers learns for free
Shouting gospel and talks about thee
Guyana’s flavor of colors and spice
Preaching on the revelation of Christ
Repent! Change your ways, she says
Blessings of God and the coming day
Repent! Or hell-fire will be that price
Her bible up high and words of advice
She righteously preaches for all to hear
God’s salvation for those listening ears
GEORGETOWN IN 1866 Historical Georgetown, so long ago
Faded brown and disappearing glow
It was 1866, and the passage of time
Major events of the world’s timeline
Fog of history and a disappearing blur
And remembering the way things were
Sails on vessels, wooden town so neat
A lone horse and buggy on the street
Old Georgetown in the shining light
149 years ago, and an incredible sight
SOUNDS OF A GUYANA MORN Out of a sleeping Guyanese night
Fowlcock greets the dawning light
A pitter- patter of the pouring rain
Clattering zinc roof & windowpane
Clearer sky and the songbirds sings
The barks of dogs, doing their thing
Clangs of pots & pans as coffee boils
The sizzling of eggs and bacon in oil
Hoof beats and voices out in the street
Sounds of a Georgetown morning so sweet
AFTER THE RAIN Children running in the street Flashback memories so sweet Having fun, laughter and song After the rain and all day long Fresh in the air as they play out Staying fit when they run about Games they play, I know so well My Guyana where thoughts dwell BARRELS OF RUM A thousand barrels of El Dorado Rum
Aging in oak & the best spirits for some
The making of Guyana, the sugar & of old
The blend of time and Demerara’s gold
HOOFBEATS OF THE RUPUNUNI CATTLE TRAIL Ride the Rupununi Cattle Trail in the sky
Ride once more, rolling savannah up high
Saddle up for that last round up, and ride
Stay steady in the saddle & use guiding reins
Ride to the coast thru shine and stormy rains
Ride meandering trail, where monkeys howl
Cross the rushing rivers, passing jungle growls
Brave the reptiles, mosquitoes and hot weather
Echoes of hoof beats & vaqueros as tough as leather
NEW DAY We are greeted with a bright new day
Dreams of happiness are here to stay
Live this life with kindness and worth
A pledge for peace around this earth
THE TIDE IS HIGH Down by the shore when the tide is right
Within the hush of nature, fishes bite
The river tide washing and so serene
Essequibo’s sweet water rising clean
Arowana, haimara, tibacuri, he yearns
Casting his hook & line from the stern
Soon his fishes will be dangling about
Fried fresh water dish, without any doubt
CHILD OF GUYANA
I am a child of Guyana’s green
Land of much nature to be seen
Pristine forest and grassy plains
A rich land of sunshine and rain
Flat coast, hills and rocky heights
The majestic harpy eagle in flight
Fruits, vegetables & a lucky seed
Creeks to swim and colorful beads
Cassava bread and a pepperpot fill
Corial, paddle, with school on a hill
Coconuts to drink and bush tea brew
I am a child of the fresh morning dew
SANTA ROSA SMILES
A smile in the water, pure and simple
Santa Rosa Mission, delightful dimple
The pulse of a precious heart that race
Reflected on her sweet sunshine face
Giggles and laughter, a cheerful sound
A girl in the water and happiness found
FELLOWSHIP- MAHAICONY
Between two poles I’d prefer to swing
Laying suspended in a Mahaicony sling
Supported between heaven and earth
Balancing the things that give us worth
A place of relief and pleasurable breeze
Hearing the birds beneath the mango tree
A rendezvous for tired body and mind
Stolen moments in a hammock so kind
MORACUT OF THE MANGROVES Demerara greets the Atlantic tide Mangrove coast and soft inside Fountain of life spawn of muck Moracut fishes & crabs to pluck Water fowls dancing on breeze Entanglement of roots & leaves Egrets, herons, stork & spoonbill Long legged Ibis & flamingo thrill Guyana’s mudflat and salty coast Rich with bountiful fishes to boast DEMERARA/ESSEQUIBO RAILWAY 1935 Remembered days of trembling tracks Of 1897 Upper Demerara, way- way back Wismar to Essequibo Train with folks Timber, gold and diamonds of hopes Thick smoke of steam engine in mood A sweet rattling song of history to soothe MABARUMA LOVE A good life is all about living A gentle smile and the giving Life is also about the knowing Wisdom & the graceful going So enjoy it with love and ease A Mabaruma love if you please YELLOW POUI FRESHNESS In reaching for something new You will know something true That the new soon becomes old And are yesterday stories, retold Something more or something new Expectations & answers lies within you CAMOUFLAGE
Animals and their surroundings are the blend
Mother Earth’s tale of adaptation and pretend
The rhythm of life in the light and also the dark
The ghost bird, looking like a piece of tree bark
Reptiles, like the color of the leaves as they stalk
Waiting patiently for prey & for those who walks
Nature’s gradual camouflage & inexorable magic
No wizard but survival of the fittest the only logic
And there walking within the shrubs of the sunlight
A jaguar of Guyana, on a mission of stealth & might
AQUARIUM DREAM When I was a boy of eight or so I was mesmerize to see fishes go Shallow waters with colorful fish An aquarium of a dream my wish I watched them so cute and swift Lively in the creek, a beautiful gift I caught some by using every trick A net, a scoop in a trench or a creek Kept them in a jar or a bottle of glass Lined with an ivy plant or some grass SHOOTING FISH
Bow and arrow in the fading light
Drifting into the darkness of night
Fish sheltering near the river shore
Lukanani, tibacuri, catabac & more
The bite of the river, ripples so still
Rhythm of a native Guyanese thrill
Last rays of light as dusk turns gray
An arrow shoots without much delay
Patience & quiet in the light of moon
Fry fish and cassava bread very soon
BEST BUDDIES
Kako River and a faraway land
Smiling buddies, hand in hand
Sunshine friends, snug & warm
Mazaruni kids, hugs and charm
Such friendship can’t be replace
Pure like the smiles on their face
THREE PULLING & TWO SPARES [Enmore, Guyana] Three donkeys pulling in the hot weather
