5 - S TA R H OT E L
DESIGN CONCEPT

B Y:
MADERAZO
MANALO
PINTINIO
PROPOSED CONCEPT:
B AT T L E O F
M A C TA N
DESIGNING A 5-STAR HOTEL WITH THE BATTLE
OF MACTAN AS THE ARCHITECTURAL CONCEPT
COULD BE A FASCINATING AND UNIQUE
ENDEAVOR. THE BATTLE OF MACTAN, WHICH
TOOK PLACE IN 1521 IN THE PHILIPPINES, IS
RENOWNED FOR BEING THE EVENT WHERE
LAPU-LAPU, A LOCAL CHIEFTAIN, DEFEATED
THE FORCES OF FERDINAND MAGELLAN, A
PORTUGUESE EXPLORER. HERE'S HOW
DESIGNERS MIGHT CONCEPTUALIZE SUCH A
HOTEL:
1 . I N S P I R AT I ON
FROM INDIGENOUS
ARCHITECTURE

Take inspiration from the traditional

5 - S TA R H OT E L D E S I G N C O N C E P T
architectural styles of the Philippines,
particularly those of the Visayan region where
the Battle of Mactan occurred. This could
involve the use of indigenous materials such as
bamboo, cogon grass, and wood, as well as
traditional design elements like thatched roofs
and intricate carvings.

3
2 . I N T E G R AT I ON
OF HISTORICAL
ELEMENTS

Incorporate elements of the battle into the

design in subtle and tasteful ways. This
could include motifs inspired by traditional

5 - S TA R H OT E L D E S I G N C O N C E P T
weapons used in the battle, such as spears
and shields, as well as symbolic
representations of the bravery and resilience
of the native warriors.

The 5-star Hotel to be build was kilometer apart from

where Lapu-Lapu statue was situated. Therefore, the hotel
wants to offer a glimpse of history by incorporating statues
of Battle of Mactan to its water features at its façade.
Additionally, the hotel also wants to offer local artwork
exhibit which may be adjacent to the hotel’s atrium for
better viewing and experience.

3. WATER
FEATURE S

Given that the Battle of Mactan took place

5 - S TA R H OT E L D E S I G N C O N C E P T
on an island, water could play a significant
role in the hotel's design. Consider
incorporating water features such as pools,
fountains, and reflective ponds to evoke the
surrounding seas and pay homage to the
naval aspect of the battle.

5
4. LANDSCAPING

Utilize landscaping to recreate the lush

tropical environment of Mactan Island.
This could involve the use of native plants
and trees, as well as the incorporation of

5 - S TA R H OT E L D E S I G N C O N C E P T
elements such as rocky outcrops and
sandy beaches to evoke the rugged
beauty of the island landscape.

Fire trees or Flame trees grow in tropical countries all over

the world, like the Philippines. Its scientific name is Delonix
regia. This flowering tree starts to bloom every April and
ends in May. The flower matches the color of the bright sky
and the summer heat. It gives color to eyesight and adds
life to the surrounding. When the tree starts to bloom, it
means the summer season starts in the Philippines. This is
one of the reasons why tourist love summer despite of the
blazing temperature.

5. ART AND
SCULPTURE

5 - S TA R H OT E L D E S I G N C O N C E P T
Commission artwork and sculptures that
celebrate the culture and history of the
Philippines, with a particular focus on the
Battle of Mactan. These could be displayed
throughout the hotel, both indoors and
outdoors, serving as focal points and
conversation starters for guests.

7
6. CULTURAL
EXPERIENCES

Offer guests the opportunity to immerse

5 - S TA R H OT E L D E S I G N C O N C E P T
themselves in the history and culture of the
region through curated experiences and
activities. This could include guided tours of
historical sites related to the Battle of Mactan,
traditional performances and demonstrations,
and hands-on workshops where guests can
learn about indigenous crafts and traditions.

MAIN CONCEPT:

The main concept will be Battle of Mactan. In simple terms,

“Beauty exists beyond conflict”.

SUB-CONCEPT:

The sub-concept will be kampilan and sandugo which can be

seen in its features and landscaping. The kampilan, with its graceful

P R E S E N TAT I O N T I T L E
curves and razor-sharp edge, embodies the spirit of Filipino strength and
honor. Then, Sandugo is often depicted in Philippine history and is
celebrated as a symbol of unity, friendship, and cultural heritage. The
Sandugo reminds us of the ties that unite us as individuals, while the
Kampilan speaks of our heritage. Collaboratively, they establish the
framework of Filipino identity that the proposed five-star hotel and resort
desires the world to witness.
