1. Give the different theories of leadership. Discuss each

GREAT MAN THEORY

Have you experienced someone say that someone is "born to lead"? These notions
say that strong

leadership is not a skill that can be learned. One either inherits it from birth or does not.
Because

leadership was viewed at the time as predominantly a male characteristic, especially

when it came to

terms of military leadership, the term "Great Man" was used. According to this view,
appeal,

determination, wisdom, and independence are natural characteristics of great leaders

who are born,

not created. It highlights how leadership qualities are timeless and relevant in all eras
and cultural

contexts.

TRAIT THEORY

A leader's shared personality or behavioral traits are often determined by trait theories.
The Trait

Theory, which builds on the Great Man Theory, claims that successful leaders possess
particular

character traits and behaviors that make them capable of leading others. It draws
attention to attributes

like competence, emotional stability, communication skills, and decision-making ability.

TRANSACTIONAL THEORY

This kind of leadership, considered among the most popular in business, maintains that
the best way
to maximize employee performance is through an organized system of rewards and
punishments. The

theory concentrates on using a system of incentives and sanctions that encourage

teamwork. It places

a strong emphasis on an organized strategy used by leaders to maintain organizational

effectiveness

and motivate employees through rewards and penalties.

RELATIONAL THEORY

Along with wanting everyone to reach their potential, these leaders are also concerned
with the output

of the group. High ethical and moral standards are common among these leaders.
Unlike transactional

leadership, relational theory places more emphasis on establishing connection and

encouraging

teamwork in order to accomplish objectives. Building a positive work environment and

interacting with

team members are its main goals.

PARTICIPATIVE THEORY

Theories of participative leadership suggest that considering other people's opinions is

the best way

to lead. Listening to staff members, including them in decision-making, and distributing

authority are all

components of participative leadership. The work atmosphere that results is creative

and collaborative

as it supports diversity, proactive communication, and accountability.

SITUATIONAL THEORIES

Effective leadership may depend on the circumstances, according to situational

theories. To attain

the best outcomes, leaders need to adjust their approach according to the situation, the
team's
background, and the desired outcomes. An authoritarian style may be more suitable
when the group's

leader is its most experienced and competent member. Alternatively, a democratic

system would work

better in situations when group members are knowledgeable experts.

A variety of viewpoints on leadership are provided by these theories, which emphasize

the

significance of character attributes, actions, situational flexibility, and interpersonal

development in

successful leadership techniques. By utilizing these theories, leaders can improve team
performance,

acquire a flexible skill set, and successfully manage a range of organizational

difficulties.

2. Differentiate the 3 leadership styles

AUTHORITARIAN LEADERSHIP (AUTOCRATIC)

Description: Authoritarian leaders strictly manage their team and make choices on their
own, without

seeking input from others. Authoritarian leadership, sometimes referred to as autocratic

leadership, is

defined by minimal group participation and individual authority over all decisions.
Autocratic leaders

typically make decisions based on their own assessments and infrequently seek
feedback from their

subordinates. This style of leadership entails total, concentrated authority over a group,
enabling

prompt decision-making, particularly in emergency situations.

Effectiveness: This approach may be effective when making prompt judgments and
providing clear

direction, but it can also hinder motivation and innovation.

PARTICIPATIVE LEADERSHIP (DEMOCRATIC)

Description: Democratic leaders value their team members' opinions and encourage
cooperation by

involving them in decision-making. Democratic leadership, also known as participatory

leadership,

calls on leaders to value their team members' perspectives, encourage candid

communication, and

include them in decision-making processes. This strategy encourages more

participation, better

teamwork, and the possibility of more creative solutions.

Effectiveness: By encouraging diversity as well as creativity, and team happiness, this

approach

raises engagement and generates innovation.

DELEGATIVE LEADERSHIP (LAISSEZ-FAIRE)

Description: Team members are given freedom to make decisions under the direction of
delegative

leaders. A management approach where team members are given significant freedom
to decide for

themselves and accept responsibility for their work. With this strategy, team members
operate

independently and take responsibility for their actions, with leaders providing little in the
way of

guidance and direction.

Effectiveness: Although this approach is appropriate for highly talented teams, it can
cause

confusion, a loss of focus, and a decline in team member motivation.

By differentiating these leadership styles, organizations can adapt their approach based
on the

situation, team dynamics, and desired outcomes to effectively lead and motivate their
teams towards
success.

3. What are the characteristics of leadership?

o Integrity: In order to establish respect and trust among team members, leaders should

conduct themselves in an honest, dependable, and moral manner.

o Vision: A strong vision for the future is possessed by effective leaders, who inspire
and

direct their people toward common goals and objectives.

o Empathy: Leaders that possess empathy are able to comprehend and take into
account the

thoughts, feelings, and viewpoints of others, which promotes a welcoming and

cooperative

work atmosphere.

o Resilience: Strong leaders are able to endure difficulties, adjust to new circumstances,
and

retain a positive attitude—all of which motivate their teams to succeed.

o Self-Awareness: Conscientious leaders are aware of their advantages and

disadvantages,

which helps them assign work and make wise judgments.

o Collaboration: Leaders who contribute to cooperation and teamwork develop an

accessible,

creative, and respectful culture inside their organizations.

o Adaptability: Capable of handling unpredictable situations and guiding their people

through

uncertainty, effective leaders are flexible and open to change.

o Communication: Strong communication skills are crucial for leaders to convey their
vision,

provide feedback, and inspire their teams effectively.

o Learning Agility: Leaders that place a high priority on continuous education and
development
are better able to take on new tasks, pick up new abilities, and remain competitive in a
setting

that is changing quickly.

o Positive Attitude: Leaders that show a positive view have the ability to inspire and
motivate

their people, establishing an atmosphere of hope, development, and responsiveness.
