Bag Technique

Description

Bag technique is a tool by which the nurse, during her visit will enable her to
perform a nursing procedure with ease and deftness, to save time and effort with
the end view of rendering effective nursing care to clients.

Public health bag is an essential and indispensable equipment of a public


health nurse which she has to carry along during her home visits. It contains
basic medication and articles which are necessary for giving care.

Principles

1. Performing the bag technique will minimize, if not, prevent the spread
of any infection.
2. It saves time and effort in the performance of nursing procedures.
3. The bag technique can be performed in a variety of ways depending
on the agency’s policy, the home situation, or as long as principles of
avoiding transfer of infection is always observed.

B. BAG TECHNIQUE

DEFINITION
• It is a tool making use of a public health bag through which the nurse, during
her/his home visit can perform nursing procedures with ease; less time and
effort and renders effective nursing care.
PURPOSE
• To render effective nursing care to clients and/or members of the family
during home visit.

CONTENTS OF BAG AND ITS ARRANGEMENT


• Front of bag, left to right
- Oral thermometer
- Rectal thermometer
• On right near end of bag
- Test tube and holder
- Medicine dropper
• On left near end of bag
- Medicine glass
- Weighing scale
- Bandage scissors
• Back of bag (left & right)
- Alcohol 70% - Ophthalmic
- Acetic Acid ointment
- Aromatic spirit of - Hydrogen peroxide
ammonia - Zepheran solution
- Benedict’s solution - Spirit of ammonia
- Betadine - Acetic solution
• Center of bag
- Forceps (straight & - Syringe and

NOTE: Blood pressure apparatus and stethoscope are carried separately.


• Package containing a sterile drape
• Sterile equipment as needed, wrapped sterile gauze, antiseptic solution
PROCEDURES 1 2 3 4 5
1. Upon arriving at client’s home, place the bag on the table or any flat
surface lined with paper lining, clean side out (folded part touching 1 2 3 4 5
the table). Put the bags handle or strap beneath the bag.
2. Ask for a basin of water and a glass of water if faucet is not available.

3. Open the bag, take the linen/plastic lining and spread over work
field or area. The clean side out (folded part out). 1 2 3 4 5
4. Take out hand towel, soap dish and apron and place them at one
corner of the work area (within the confines of the linen/plastic 1 2 3 4 5
lining).
5. Do hand washing. Wipe, dry with towel. Leave the plastic wrappers
of the towel in soap dish in a bag. 1 2 3 4 5
6. Put on apron right side out and wrong side with crease touching the
body, sliding it to the neck strap. Neatly tie the straps at the back. 1 2 3 4 5

7. Put out things most needed for the specific case (e.g.) thermometer,
kidney basin, waste paper bag) and place at one corner of the work 1 2 3 4 5
area.

9. Close the bag.

10. Proceed into the specific nursing care or treatment.

URINE TEST FOR ALBUMIN
1. Cleanse and assembles all articles/equipments needed.

2. Prepares 3 or more cotton balls with denatured alcohol or alcohol
lamp. 1 2 3 4 5
3. Fills the test tube 2/3 of urine. (Note: urine specimen should have
been collected early in the morning before breakfast). 1 2 3 4 5
4. Heats the upper portion only of the test tube with urine without
shaking. Compares the heated to the unheated portion for changes. 1 2 3 4 5
5. Read and interprets result correctly.
a. If there is no change on the heated portion, the result is
negative. Acetic acid is not added 1 2 3 4 5
b. If cloudiness appears:
b.1. add 5 drops of acetic acid to the urine

b.2. heats again to rule out presence of phosphates. (Note: if
cloudiness disappears, result will still negative: but if it persist in 1 2 3 4 5
spite of addition of acetic acid or even deepens, the result is
positive.)
6. Discard things appropriately.

7. Explains correctly and comprehensively to the client or caregiver the

URINE TEST FOR SUGAR
1. Measure 5ml Benedict’s Solution in medicine glass.

2. Holding the test tube with the holder, heat it over a spirit lamp till
the Benedict’s solution boils without over flowing. 1 2 3 4 5
3. Drop 8-10 drops of urine into the boiling Benedict’s solution.

4. After again boiling the mixture let it cool down. 1 2 3 4 5
5. While cooling the mixtures changes color. 1 2 3 4 5
6. The color of the mixtures serves as a guide to the amount of sugar in 1 2 3 4 5
the urine.
7. Read and interprets the result.
a. Blue- sugar absent 1 2 3 4 5
b. Green- 0.5% sugar 1 2 3 4 5
c. Yellow- 1% sugar 1 2 3 4 5
d. Orange- 1.5% sugar 1 2 3 4 5
e. Bright red- 2% sugar 1 2 3 4 5
8. Discard things used appropriately.
9. Explain correctly and comprehensively to the client or caregiver the 1 2 3 4 5
result and interpretation of the test.
10. After completing nursing care or treatment, clean and alcoholize the 1 2 3 4 5
things used.

12. Open the bag and put back all articles in their proper places 1 2 3 4 5
13. Remove apron folding away from the body, with soiled side folded 1 2 3 4 5
inwards, and inside out. Place it in the bag.
14. Fold the linen/plastic lining, clean; place it in the bag and close the 1 2 3 4 5
bag.
15. Make e post-visit conference on matters relevant to health care, 1 2 3 4 5
taking anecdotal preparatory to final reporting.
16. Make appointment for the next visit (either home or clinic), taking 1 2 3 4 5
note of the purpose.
17. Sees to it that the waste receptacle and its content are properly 1 2 3 4 5
disposed of before leaving the home.
