A Systematic Review of Literature on Selected Scheduled Airlines in India:
A Study of 40 Papers

ABSTRACT
This study supports the importance of published research on aviation in the academic
environment. In this study, the researcher has reviewed research published on the topic after
2010. This review has two purposes: (1) to analyze the literature on Indian Aviation
systematically (IA) and (2) to provide an overview of various causes and the effects in
relation to transportation and aviation to develop a roadmap for future researchers. The
Systematic Literature Review (SLR) method has been used in this paper. Literature has been
collected from 40 research papers published from 2010 to 2020. It has been found that the
number of journals in the category has increased by 50% during the last decade. This may be
because the lower cost of publishing journals has led to an increase in their supply, and the
increased number of journals indicates more significant interest in a broader range of
disciplines in the topics. The critical determinants identified are financial performance,
operational efficiency, customer satisfaction, service quality, traffic statistics, and
profitability. There has been no complete review in this area exploring the theories, context,
constructs, and practices until now. Therefore, this review provides deep understandings of
the topic and offers a unified picture of the subject field.

1. Introduction
The civil aviation industry in India has become one of the fastest-growing industries in the
country over the past three years. India has become the third-largest domestic aviation market
globally and is expected to overtake the UK to become the third-largest air transport
passenger market by 2024. The aviation sector is one of the main economic drivers of
prosperity, development and employment in every country. India is the ninth-largest aviation
market globally with around 16 billion US dollars and is on the verge of becoming the third-
largest Indian market. Due to the large and growing middle-class population, the aviation
industry promises rapid economic growth, higher disposable income, increasing middle-class
demands, and low penetration in general, enormous growth potential. In an era of expansion
driven by low-cost airlines, modern airports, Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in domestic
airlines, cutting edge interventions in information technology, and an increasing emphasis on
regional connectivity, the civil aviation sector has grown steadily at 13.8% growth over the
past decade and the factors which were not of primary concern and not necessary were
ignored in the context of Indian aviation (Indian Aviation Industry, 2021). The air

transportation industry has increased its share of overall passenger transport and cargo traffic.
Numerous studies have shown that air transportation contributes to a country's economic and
social development and represents an essential engine of economic growth for nations
(Matías Ginieis, 2012). Daley (2009) summarizes the economic benefits of aviation, finding
that it allows companies to expand and penetrate in other markets, it contributes to corporate
specialization by generating scale economies and stimulating foreign direct investment, and
there are also social benefits in terms of workforce mobility, leisure travel and cultural
exchanges, amongst others. The researcher has conducted a detailed study of service quality,
operational efficiency, and performance evaluation through a systematic literature review to
close this research gap.
Purpose of the Study
Almost all the economic activities have been impacted due to the setback caused by the
endemic which was spread globally. The same is the case with the aviation and transportation
industry. Along with this the transportation and aviation sector is a very important part of any
economy and therefore the research is conducted to access the following:
 The main aim is to know that how the aviation and transportation industry is impacted
due to the various economic and other macro variable changes.
 Also, the primary purpose of this study is to do a systematic literature review
analyzed by content analysis on "Selected Scheduled Airlines in India".

2. Methodology
Data Collection: In this paper, 40 peer-reviewed articles on selected airlines over the past
decade have been collected from various sources to analyze the study. The data has been
collected from various websites and libraries, Emerald (www.emeraldinsight.com), JSTOR
(www.jstor.org) and Research Gate (www.researchgate.net).
Analysis of the collected data: The analysis of this study was carried out in several stages

3. Findings and Discussion

We have analyzed all the journals in "Transportation" in the ISI Web of Knowledge database.
We find that the number of journals in the category has increased by 50% during the last
decade. The lower costs for the provision of journals have led to an increased supply of
journals, and publication has now become an indispensable prerequisite for a scientific
career. Increased interest in a broader range of disciplines on the subjects; Some of the newer
journals have a more limited focus, such as the International Journal of Transportation
Research and Sustainable Transportation Part F - Traffic Psychology and Behavior.
Specifically, there were 18 journals at the beginning of 2010, 20 in 2012, 24 in 2016 and 28
in 2020. There was a change in journals in 2009, with the addition of Journal Road and
Transport Research to that category and the disappearance of the Transportation Journal,
although that change didn't change the total number of journals.
4. Conclusion
This study has made a count of the papers published between 2010 and 2020 on specific
topics in the air transportation sector and has structured them by their subject areas. There is
evidence of a growing interest by academics in the broadly defined field of air transportation
management, significantly since 2001, with the output of articles on air transportation has
increased to over 100 papers per year since 2010, with a large proportion of the studies being
on airports and airline management. Researchers can concentrate on the analysis of the exile
factors in future.
