What is Frontier Technology?
• Frontier technology is the next phase in the evolution of modern
technology. It’s likely we have heard (or used) the phrase “emerging
technology” to describe conceptual tech that is years from being
developed. Frontier technology is the intersection where radical
forward thinking and real world implementation meet.
• As we enter the Fourth Industrial Revolution, a revolution defined by
frontier technological breakthroughs such as AI, robotics, 3D printing,
and the Internet of Things amongst others, it will be critical that these
technologies work for society and the environment as well as the
economy
• Frontier technologies offer a multitude of opportunities to re-imagine
how our economies could serve better social and environmental needs.
Example : the adoption of technologies and innovation in production
processes has the potential to enhance productivity

Industry 4.0 is a Game Changers
Industry 4.0 + Society 5.0

A human-centered society that balances economic advancement with the resolution of social
problems by a system that highly integrates cyberspace and physical space

A society where we can resolve various social challenges by incorporating the innovations of the 4th
Industrial Revolution (IoT, Big Data, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Robot, and the sharing economy) into
every industry and social life.
How Society 5.0 Works

In Society 5.0, people, things, and systems are all connected in cyberspace and optimal results obtained by AI
exceeding the capabilities of humans are fed back to physical space. This process brings new value to industry
and society in ways not previously possible

Interpreting Tech Hype - Gartner Hype Cycle
Five Key Phases of a Technology’s Life Cycle
Each Hype Cycle drills down into the five key phases of a technology’s life cycle.
• Innovation Trigger: A potential technology breakthrough kicks things off. Early proof-of-
concept stories and media interest trigger significant publicity. Often no usable products
exist and commercial viability is unproven.
• Peak of Inflated Expectations: Early publicity produces a number of success stories —
often accompanied by scores of failures. Some companies take action; many do not.
• Trough of Disillusionment: Interest wanes as experiments and implementations fail to
deliver. Producers of the technology shake out or fail. Investments continue only if the
surviving providers improve their products to the satisfaction of early adopters.
• Slope of Enlightenment: More instances of how the technology can benefit the
enterprise start to crystallize and become more widely understood. Second- and third-
generation products appear from technology providers. More enterprises fund pilots;
conservative companies remain cautious.
• Plateau of Productivity: Mainstream adoption starts to take off. Criteria for assessing
provider viability are more clearly defined. The technology's broad market applicability
and relevance are clearly paying off.
Technical aptitude will no longer be sufficient to secure their future in IT organizations. Skepticism toward the
effectiveness of IT, the rise of IT automation, worldwide geographic labour shifts and multi-sourcing will lead to
the emergence of a new breed of IT professional, the ‘versatilist’, who will have technical aptitude, local
knowledge, knowledge of industry processes and leadership ability.
