QUESTION 2

Figure 2 below shows a propped cantilever beam. If the 60 kN point load shown on the
Figure is the collapse load.

a) Using the STATIC METHOD, i.e. the use of reactant and simply supported BM
calculate the fully plastic bending moment of the section.

b) Calculate the Plastic Modulus of the beam section if the yield stress is 300 MPa.

𝑀𝑃 = 𝑍𝑃 × 𝜎𝑦 ∴ 𝑍𝑃 = 𝜎𝑦

𝑍𝑃 =

𝑍𝑃 = 2.8571333333 × 10−4 𝑚3

𝑍𝑃 = 2.8571333333 × 10−4 × 1 × 109 = 285.713 × 103 𝑚𝑚3

QUESTION 3

The frame shown as Figure 3 below is fixed at both supports A and D and is subjected to loading as
shown on the Figure. The fully plastic bending moments (Mp) are shown against the members on
the Figure, i.e. for the columns is 200 kNm and that for the beam is 250 kNm.

a) Using the VIRTUAL WORK (displacement) method determine the collapse mode and the
magnitude of the collapse load.

b) Calculate the reactions at the supports.

c) Draw on the graph paper provided the Shear Force (SF), Bending Moment (BM) and Axial
Force (AF) diagrams for the frame at collapse.
