Plural Forms of
Nouns
At the end of this lesson you will be able to:

1. Identify regular and irregular plural nouns.

2.Evaluate one's use of plural nouns and correct errors in


plural noun usage.

3. Apply the rules to change singular nouns into plural form.


Nouns can be categorized into two
main groups based on how their
plurals are formed: Regular Plural
Nouns and Irregular Plural
Nouns.
Regular Plural Nouns
- are nouns that follow a predictable
pattern when forming their plurals.

- these nouns typically add "-s" or "-es"


to the singular form of the noun.
Examples of Regular Plural Nouns
Irregular Plural Nouns
- are nouns that “some” do not follow the
standard rules for forming plurals. They have
unique or irregular ways of changing from
singular to plural.

-changes can involve alterations in spelling,


pronunciation, or entirely different words.

Rules in Forming the
Plural of Nouns
Regular Plural Nouns:

Rule # 1:

Most nouns form their plurals by simply


adding an s.
Rule # 2:

The plurals of nouns ending in s,


sh, ch, x, and z are formed by
adding es.
Rule # 3:
Nouns ending in y preceded by a
consonant form their plurals by
changing the y to i and adding es.
Rule # 4:

For nouns ending in y preceded by a


vowel (a, e, i, o, u), just add an s to
form their plurals.
Rule # 5:

Most nouns ending in o add an s


to form their plurals.
But some of them will add an es.
Rule # 6:

The plurals of most nouns


ending in f are made by
adding an s.
Irregular Plural Nouns

Rule # 7

Some nouns ending in f or fe, however,


form their plurals by changing the f or
fe to ve and adding an s. Memorize the
plurals of these words.

Some nouns use the same


word in the singular and the
plural. Memorize them.

There are a few nouns in which the


plural is formed in an irregular
manner and spelled differently
from the singular. Memorize these
common words.
Exception: (Irregular Plural Nouns)

Remember that some nouns do


not follow any of the rules and
pattern! Like those nouns that
you need to change the spelling.
These nouns are called....

nouns. They remain the same in
both singular and plural forms.

singular form, following a predictable pattern
and rules, while irregular nouns have unique
or irregular changes in their plural forms and
some do not follow standard pattern and
rules.
