CE122-5 – TRAFFIC AND HIGHWAY ENGINEERING HOMEWORK 2

RAINBOW PROVO AYONG, RCE, RMP 01 APRIL 2024

1. A railway curve having a radius of 402 m, has a

distance between their rails of 1.5 m and the outer rail
is 15 cm higher than the inner rail. Find the max speed
(kph) that a train could move along this curve so that
there will be no lateral pressure on the wheels and the
rails.

2. A ramp from NLEX going to Angeles City connects

with a local road forming a T- intersection. The design
speed on the expressway is 48 kph. An additional lane
is provided on the local road to allow vehicles on the
ramp to turn right onto the local road without
stopping. The turning road has a mountable curb
which will provide for a one-lane, one-way operation
with provision for passing a stalled vehicle. If the curve
has a super-elevation of 0.08 and a frictional factor of
0.16, compute the minimum radius (m) of the turning
road.

3. Compute the ruling minimum radius (m) of horizontal

curve for a design speed of 8- kph. f = 0.15 and e =
0.067. Hint: For ruling minimum, increase design speed by
16 kph.

4. Compute the impact factor for a horizontal curve

radius of 450 m if the design speed is 115 kph.

The solution and answer will be handwritten (as much as

possible engineering lettering), —no need to copy the
questions. The homework will be submitted on Monday (08
April 2024), before the start of your Quiz 2.
