APPENDIX ‘A’
A.1 Apparatus
A.1.1 Reaction flask of 250 ml capacity of alkali resistant glass and chemically cleaned.
A.2 Materials
A.3 Procedure
A.3.1 Weigh accurately 10 + 0.1 g of the sample in conical flask. Add 10 ml of Benzene
followed by 25 ± 0.03 ml of the 0.5 N alcoholic Postassium hydroxide solution and connect
the reflux air condenser to the flask. Heat the flask on electric hot plate for not more than one
hour. Boil gently until the sample is completely saponified and after the flask and condenser
have cooled, wash down the inside of the condenser with about 10 ml of hot ethyl alcohol
neutral to phenolphthalein indicator solution, and titrate with standard 0.5 N hydrochloric
acid. Record the volume used.
A.3.2 Continue the titration using Bromocresol green as indicatior and record the volume of
standard solution of HCI used.
A.3.3 Prepare and conduct a blank determination at the same time.
A.4.1 Calculate the percentages of Oleic acid and Triethanolamine in the sample as follows
and report to the nearest 0.1 percent mass:
11
JSS 9150-11: 2016
(Revision No. 3)
Where,
NOTE - ‘E’ should be determined by titrating a sample of actual batch of triethanolamine used in the
manufacture of the oil, using Bromocresol green as indicator, If this is not possible the empirical figure
of 0.136 should be used.

APPENDIX ‘B’
B.1 Transfer 25 ml of the oil to a chemically cleaned 250 ml glass stoppered separating
funnel. Add 50 ml freshly boiled and cooled distilled water (pH 6.0 – 7.0) and shake
vigorously for 2 minutes. Stand the separating funnel in order to allow separation of the
aqueous layer which shall subsequently be filtered, if necessary. Determine the pH of the
separated aqueous layer by any suitable colorimetric method. In case of dispute the pH value
shall be determined electrometrically using a glass electrode. Report the value up to first
decimal.
