B METHOD FOR THE DETERMINATION OF SIZE OF GRAPHITE

PARTICLES GREATER THAN 5 µm

26
B.1 Procedure

B.1.1 Mix the material thoroughly by mechanical stirring and take 0.2 g to an accuracy of
0.1 mg in a tall 150 ml beaker. Add 20 ml of the medicinal paraffin and stir thoroughly to
ensure uniform dispersion. Transfer one small drop of this dilute dispersion to a clear
polished microscope slide and place a cover - slip, ensuring even distribution of the

1
suspension and removal of air pockets.

B.1.2 Using a microscope capable of resolving particles of 0.3 µm in diameter, and ignoring

1.
any particle of similar size, count the total number of particles (t) in a total area (a) of the
slide sufficiently large to contain at least 100 particles, and consisting of at least of 10 sub
areas chosen at random over the slide.

B.1.3 Count the number of particles (g) greater than 5 µm in diameter in an area (b) of the
:5 1
16
slide, sufficiently large to contain at least 50 such particles at the same magnification. If, less
than 50 particles be counted when the area(b) is 100 times the area (a), the count may be
discontinued.

PARTICLES

(RESIDUE ON 64µm – TEST SIEVE)

26
C.1 Procedure

C.1.1 Take 50 g of Oil OX-320 into a beaker. Dilute the Oil OX-320 with 100 ml of white
spirit, pass it through a 64 µm IS test sieve conforming to IS 460 (Part 2): 1985. Wash the
sieve with white spirit until the washings are clear. Dry the sieve at 105° ± 2°C for 15

D METHOD FOR DETERMINATION OF GRAPHITE CONTENT

D.1 Procedure

26
D.2 Take about 10 g of well shaken sample of Oil OX-320 in 100 ml beaker. Add about
50 ml of petroleum ether and stir it well with a glass rod. The contents shall be filtered
through a dried weighed gooch crucible provided with suitable mat. The beaker and the
crucible is washed well with petroleum ether to remove oil completely. The crucible and the
contents shall be dried at 120°C to constant mass. The increase in mass calculated as the

1
percentage of sample taken shall be the graphite constant.

NOTE- To determine the inorganic impurities in Graphite/oil OX-320 the Ash content of oil OX - 320 shall
be found out and if any appropriate correction in the Graphite content shall be made by subtracting the Ash

content from the mass of dry residue in the crucible.
