Holiday Misery at Gatwick Airport


The strike by Greek air traffic controllers (1)was called off late last night but thousands of
holidaymakers (2) were still suffering at Airports through Britain. 3.000 tourists (3) spent their
third night yesterday (4) were camping out at Gatwick Airport. One of their airport’s main
restaurants (5) was closed and 50 families with children (6) were sleeping there. A lucky few (7)
anticipated delays and (8) brought games and cushions to ease the pain and boredom for the
children.
However, by early today the restaurant area (9) looked like a refugee camp, with passengers
(10) lying among piles of baggage and rubbish.
The airport operation manager Mrs. Morrow said that the situation (11) had deteriorated
dramatically in the last 24 hours despite the fact that the strike (12) had ended . She expects that
it (13) would take (take) at least 4 days (14) to clear (clear) the backlog of flights and that the
general situation (15) would return to normal by the middle of next week. However, while she
(16) was making a statement to the press, there (17) came news that French and Spanish air
traffic controllers (18) were meeting tomorrow to consider possible strike actions. They say that
their job (19) had become impossible in recent years because of the increase in the number of
flights (20) demanded by greedy tour operators at peak holiday rimes.

Jean has called to see her boyfriend, Gary.
GARY: Jean, I’m surprised to see you.
JEAN: Well, I think you owe me an explanation.
GARY: Me? What about you? (1) I saw you in the café last night. (2) We had arranged to
meet at the cinema, if you remember.
JEAN: So why (3) didn't you come into the café if you saw me?

laughing with your friends and (18) I realized that (19)you were sitting there quite comfortable
with them all evening. (20) I just lost my temper.
JEAN: Never mind. Let’s forget it. Where shall we go now?
