Pre-requisite: Knowledge of Permutation, Combination and Pre-Calculus.
Course Objectives
To equip the students with intermediate to advanced level concepts and tools in probability and
statistics that help them tackle relevant problems within engineering domain.
Course Outcomes
After completion of the course, students would be able to
1. Know the concept of probability and random variables,
2. Solve problems involving conditional probability and moments,
3. Demonstrate understanding of the applications of various probability distributions,
measures of central tendency to solve real life problems,
4. Analyse the different probability density functions and their applications.
Detailed Syllabus:
Unit Description Duration

1. Probability: 6
Concept of experiments, sample space, event. Definition of Combinatorial
Probability. Conditional Probability, Mutually exclusive events, Joint
probability of related and independent events, Statistical independence, Total
Probability theorem, Bayes theorem.

2. Random Variables 8
Random Variables, Cumulative Distribution function, Probability Density
Function,
Mathematical expectation and its properties, Moments (including variance) and
their properties, interpretation, Moment generating function.
